If you’re new to Geek Psychology, my name is Matt Sherman. People call me Sherman. I'm a personality type expert, life coach, hypnotist, author, podcaster, and course creator. I help mainly INFPs embrace their unique strengths and navigate life's challenges. Through practical strategies and deep insights, I aim to help people like you live a more fulfilling and authentic live where you can wake up and feel good about who you are and your impact on the world. This technique to improve extraverted Sensing (Se) is so simple, and yet many of us struggle with it. As an INFP, it's way down on my list of priorities and skills - in fact, it's a weakness for me. But improving awareness of extraverted Sensing is very beneficial for everyone.
As I say in the video, it's more about awareness than "improving" and actual skill.
I know it's an easy tip, but really give it a try.

Funny - Note that to demonstrate SE you decided to use an object (apple) that wasn't actually there, even though many objects were available, and you could have easily obtained a real apple for the video. It is literally easier to work with an abstraction than a material object.

Growing up as Infp when I was a child, my teachers would mock me for not having common sense. They would tell my parents things as if I'm weird, like why is your child like this? Can't take and do simple instructions properly, it's like I have my own world during class, it's like I'm lost when they try to speak to me. I thought there was something wrong with me. I went through highschool thinking I'm weird, people will not like me for who I am. I became ashamed of myself. I wanna make friends but I simply just can't. Something repressed me. Then i found out this 16 personality. I am apparently an INFP. I might have weak sensors, but that what makes me who I am. I became so usd to having no friends to the point that it doesn't hurt anymore. I decided to move to a university after junior high, thinking I could escape and start anew, with a mindset of just letting things be. I was surprised that there were a lot of people who can think and act like me, and people who can accept me for who I am. For once I became open to people.

INFJ here. I do find INFP's pretty "weird" because of their dominant Fi, like they're not aware of the Tribe's vibe (of course this is from my Fe view) However, if you INFP's don't mind the "weird" and embrace it, it becomes a special thing about you and not a flaw or weakness. I think many view INFP's as charming and adorable.

I started doing some 4 steps daily in order to improve my Se, and one of them is to take time with yourself, to pay attention to what's going on with yourself without putting any thought into it, basically just observing without thinking (the instructions said that it should be done multiple times a day - 10/15 min). The first time I tried to do this, I couldn't even make it 2 min. It was soooo difficult to just observe the outside world or myself without having any thought process behind it. One day I managed to do it for 30 min and I was so shocked, never in my life have I gone that long without any kind of background thinking.

This is a great video, great advice. I’m developing this right now bc it’s become a problem for me in life. I started to realize on my own I have trouble connecting with and seeing clearly the external world and eventually I got myself into some toxic situations bc of this. And it at times has led to a lot of anxiety. Sooooo, that said, I’m going to focus heavily on developing my SE and experience how that gives me more balance and sense of control / ease in new environments and depth and perspective in life. I’m grateful to just have finally figured out he missing link, and it’s going to be a great journey now that I have a focus to solve it. Anyway thank you for this! It’ll be powerful :) I’m INFJ!! 😁

When I was younger as an INFP, people used to ask me what flavor something was that I had just eaten, and I was like "I don't know, I didn't really notice," and they would laugh or give me this weird look. I really do enjoy the flavors of many foods, but I would space and not focus on what I was doing. I've been using my own experiences to see how MBTI lines up with regards to others' perspectives and observations and I've found something interesting for myself! N types (I'm ENFP btw) tend to always find meaning in things and an experienced N type (meaning an Nx dom) is more likely to jump ahead on the gun as iNstinctive (another way I try to study MBTI is using similar words in place of the typical naming conventions, it's pretty nifty) actions provided it lines up with their own beliefs (Fx) and understanding (Tx). S TYPES, however!! They rely more on sensory information obviously and since this is the case, by however way it works specifically for the person, Sx doms or secondaries tend to have REALLY GOOD memory, more often than not than Nx doms and secondaries due to their reliance more on their established and learnt knowledge rather than observed and absorbed information. With that outta the way, to really train your Sx function might also really need you to be able to supplement or consciously train your sensory, observational and memory retaining cognitive capabilities, otherwise no matter how hard you try training it little by little every day like I've tried, it doesn't get that much better. Sucks for me with ADHD and not a single dose of any stimulant meds, just been sticking with coffee till I can get my hands on some meds. tl;dr, across my own observations in the 3 rollercoaster years of my studying MBTI, training S function requires the prerequisite of a good memory or similar method. (If you've never had a capacity for decent memory take note that any mental and psychological damage you take will very well deal damage to any LEARNED skill you have... take care med users)

For an INFJ, it’s your fourth function but it’s your inferior in your main four stack ..just remember not to primarily focus on developing your inferior...work on your auxiliary function and even a bit of your tertiary function because that will help you balance out the lower functions. Your inferior is there to knock you back into balance so developing it will only knock you off even more. Best to just be aware, tune into it at times and develop your aux, things will soon look up. As an INTP how can I make for a lack of Se? I'm a field hockey player and I'm really bad at analising the field. I want to get better but I really don't know how. I try watching matched but I get bored so easily, and I start thinking about complitelly unrelated stuff. As a kid when I played my mind was always somewhere else. It was so frustrating for my dad that saw me in the field with my mind somewhere else. I got better with time, but I still struggle with it. For an INTP seeing paterns is usually very easy, but finding patterns of fest visual stimuli is really hard to me. Any idea on how would I get better?
@amandatavares4741
@amandatavares4741 3 года назад
Wow that question made me swallow hard. I dont really understand hockey, but........ I'm an ISTP, patterns in physical world is my thing, but before I said something, I would recommend you analyze the importance of SOCIAL pressure on your ability. This could be repressing the Se to came out. Think of Se as a wild animal. If you repress it too much, it dies. A Tiger when hunting, is about methods and analysis of the field (that is a pretty nice way for you to start study, if brings you joy), but a tiger also know the right time to stop thinking and act upon that analyzes. If it's repressed, I'm pretty sure that tiger will starve to death. From my perspective Se works a LOT better when we stop care for what's right or wrong (controlling Ti) and just let the possibilities (Ne)... play out. But that's an ISTP talking, I'm blind Ne, and you have it too much. That may be the problem. Like everything, too much can be... too much. And as Ti is always cutting things out, Ti too uncontrolled can be an Se killer too = your brain flying away. In general, I'm good in analyse "phisical" stuff becouse I develop METHODS to do it. Think of Se analytical like a machine working, and try to apply this in the small things you do in life. Like the apple, but with procedures. If you're going to... wash the dishes, for exemple, separate the different process: cups, pans, glasses, etc. Then, analyse what kind of movement works better for each kind of process. What kind of groups works better together (if you put a spoon with another soaked spoon, it will "glued" and thereof will be hard to wash it out; so you put a spoon, and a fork, a spoon, and a fork... this can make it easy for the wather to get in and clean it faster). Study what works better, in this kind of day by day work. It's a mental process, really, but applied to the moment, and how you can do it quickly and effective. You have this kind of function too, Si working with Ti can be pretty like that. But you will probably have to control your Ne. Too much possibilities will kill the mood for Se real fast. If you have too much options, then... what could play out? (Your brain flying away again). Se with Ti it's kind the opposite. I tend to focus so hard in what I want do see, that I miss out all the other stuff, but my analises it's almost always accurate. "Focus": easy to say, hard to do, I know. But try by steps. Do it with the boring stuff, like I said, train your brain to be in the moment when you're doing something. Then it's going to be more easy to apply in hockey. You can start, in that world, paying attention to one aspect of the game, controlling your brain to narrow it. Then you will be able to fully understand what is happening and see the patterns otherwise you won't. And for watching the matches, do it in the real world too, not in a TV. TV is boring, and theoretical (witch you brain feels comfortable to... be MORE theoretical). It's easy to lose focus. In a real game, that won't be so easy. Being TOO present, forced by the moment to be present, will help your brain to stay focus. If you can get through all this texts and my bad english... Hope that helps! :)

@@GeekPsychology would you please be a bit more detailed in your question. What do you mean by idea space?

Absolutely! This person is an INFP and doesn’t have Se either, so yes definitely

As an ENTJ this sounds useless n boring af😂 BUT I suppose I do this in my garden. It's super easy to get lost in my plants. Like time stops and I connect to the earth. That's about it.

You are speaking of mindfulness, there is a practice called 5,4,3,2,1 to do this intentionally.

I have a crush on you! Iam always attracted to fellow INFPs as they're the only ones i could relate to with girls me adoring them and boys crushing on! We are the best people but people can't watch it unless they become too close to us. The best is hidden inside us like a secret! Lots of love for the work(sry passion) u're doing!

@@kadsenvieh our introverted feeling is so self centered that we enjoy other people with fi as a dominant. I'm an infp and sometimes I can't control myself with fi users.

I wish it was 7th for me. Meanwhile, the ENFP... Si: Mmm... this is nice. This is like that time when I used to eat apples. Why did I stop eating apples? (Because we have a terrible fructose intolerance) Fi: but yes, we should eat apples or some sort of fruit more. They are obviously good for you and will keep the doctor away. Ne: oh yes, that’s probably why we’ve been to the doctor so much lately. I wonder what else apples can keep away. I’ve been getting some wasps outside my window. Can they deter wasps too? Who would have to eat the apple to keep the wasp away? Is it my house? Is it enough to just keep apples in the house? I wonder if there’s been research on this natural pesticide. I can’t believe no one has thought of this. *spends hours googling random shit* 46 hours later Si: oh, I think I feel stressed. What year is it? What happened to that apple? Oh, it was supposed to help me stay present. It didn’t work. Just like all those other things I’ve tried before. *rinse and repeat for an authentic ENFP experience*
