Improve Spanish Comp 50% Listen to our Spanish stories Beginner level Q&A
Spanish in Atlanta's Spanish Story Exercise! Improve your Spanish Listening skills via carefully created stories!
The story was written strategically using verbs that were taught in level II class! This video is an example of what our Spanish workshops are like in class when we have them in person.
The story as well as the questions that accompany are all read to you. You will not be able to read along on purpose! This will help you focus more on the hearing aspect and not the reading comp.
Your ability to "speed hear" Spanish will happen when you discipline yourself to JUST LISTEN. Reading subtitles is a great tool but NOT for listening. You will always be distracted to the words you are reading to fully focus on what you are hearing! Start with simple easy stories like the ones we have and then from there increase the difficulty!
What I love about what we do in Spanish in Atlanta is that we know what material we have given our students so our exercises worksheets and drills are all designed to focus on that material.
This is an invaluable benefit to our students because it allows students to master what they learn without introducing too many confusing topics at one time.
We structure the stories to purposely have words that our students haven't learned but that don't impede comprehension so that they can learn to make logical conclusions and learn new vocabulary words in a short time.
It is almost impossible to find a place that does that and it will be hard to find books, stories and videos that can help you but don't get discouraged. You need to learn basic verbs, vocabulary and grammar about 50 verbs and 20-30 simple but powerful words, after that, you will have a good foundation to start strengthening your reading comprehension and hearing comp.
Last piece of advice there are so many but the MOST IMPORTANT:
Do not try to understand every single word you hear!!!!! This is the perfect way to fail at auditory comprehension in any language!
If you don't understand what is being said, KEEP LISTENING!!! You will eventually hear a key word that will make everything make sense. NO one can listen to a story and at the same time be thinking " Oh man, I suck at hearing Spanish... what does that word mean??" lol You CAN NOT do 2 things at the same time- listen and talk to yourself!!!
Of course, you need to know basic verbs and voc. as I mentioned above but in numerous situations hearing a few words will be more than enough to understand the general idea of a story ( except very convoluted & detail rich stories).

5 cars
no family
no friends
sad
mission trip
help people
so happy
change lives
meets girl
marries
kids
10 mission trips
creates foundation
happy

You see this?? This is the skeleton of a story. A full story is made up of a sea of words but if you focus on the building blocks of any story ( a few strategic words) . YOU WILL understand the most important part until you build your vocabulary and verb list.
2 hours movies are made of the words above :) and I narrowed it down to just 12-15 words! Never forget this. This is how you begin to do, what I like to call, "speed hearing"!
