Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps one of the most important life skills one can possess. Those with good communication skills can exert influence over others. If you communicate well, people will pay attention to what you say. They’ll remember what you say and you’ll more impact on their lives.
In this video I talk about some of my experiences and what I’ve learnt over the years and I give you pointers to how you could improve your communication and public speaking skills.

Hi Shiv, another great video! There is a lot more to being a good software developer than just coding. Could you do a video on how your organize your ToDos and how to prioritize? I am having issues when the tasks get piled up, a lot of things get forgotten and misplaced (or not done at all)...
@Matlus
@Matlus 3 года назад
nZ, I'm not sure I'd be the best person to be providing guidance on this sort of thing. I feel it's just a matter of being disciplined and organized. Each of us different way to be more organized. Maybe it's more of an issue of time management. Prioritization - are you talking from a personal objective point of view or from, "in the work place" point of view?

Hi Shiv, thanks for this video and great tips and anecdotes which most of us can relate to. "Pause" is something I liked and learned from your videos :) but understood its real importance today. Liked all the points covered, especially authenticity and sincerity (your real life experience) was awe-inspiring :) Other than practicing and improving the skills continuously, would you like to give any specific advice or tip if the person's English and fluency is not good enough and is not confident in public speaking but dream of it?
@Matlus
@Matlus 3 года назад
>>not confident in public speaking but dream of it? love how candid you are!! Yes, so here is my take. If you're in India, speaking/presenting in English, to your peers then your English needs to be on par with your peers. If you're speaking to a crowd in Bombay or Calcutta, then you English needs to on par with folks from those areas. I'm giving these as examples mind you (I haven't lived in India for decades so I'm not familiar with things in India). So effectively, yes, the better your English, the more respected and understood you will be ( in my opinion). Your command over the English language will influence how influential you will be :) Confidence.....no is is born with it. But the better you know the subject and the language in which you're presenting, the more confidence you'll have. So please don't let that stop you from trying. You've got try and keep trying. You'll fail miserably, initially, yes, but please don't let that stop you from trying or from continuing, as long as you're learning from those failures and keep improving from there. Any learning, happens only from failures. Failure is a necessity!!! You can let the crowd know you're trying/struggling and will learn. They'll love you for it! They'll support you in your journey. I did, send you a private IM on RU-vid a while back. Do you see it?

Provide Context and necessary Detail Have Proper body language Be calm, and assertive Eliminate common practice words[um..like..actually,..] and replace with a .......Pause Pick up on audience feedback Interaction is the key

One important aspect of communication is how to respond specially when talking to someone we think has more knowledge (maybe at work, conferences or even with interviewers). One may be become overly conscious and defensive when being questioned. How do you communicate in such scenarios?
@Matlus
@Matlus 3 года назад
Yes, how to respond is a very important topic but also very complex since there are millions of possibilities. I don't quite follow your question. So you're talking to some who has more knowledge. And when they say something, you feel defensive? When you're seeking knowledge, be open all possibilities. If you have a certain expectation and you're hoping to confirm your bias, you could be surprise. If you ask me a question, I can very easily tell if you're truly seeking knowledge or if you're trying to confirm a bias or you're attempting to be confrontational :). Having been a round the block so many times in my life, if I find you're question is the later two, I may just have fun with you and send you into a tailspin (I don't suffer fools honestly). But If I feel your question such that you're genuinely seek an answer, we could have a healthy discussion, provided you're open to new learning. You can't fill a cup if it's already full. You need to empty the cup first, so that you can fill it with fresh tea.
@ishansri298
@ishansri298 3 года назад
Typically, being defensive would happen in case of interviews (or a similar situation). One can be good in communication but the calmness can easily go for a toss when being questioned repeatedly and the thoughts may not remain coherent.

Next great video :D Is a video on the channel comparing the DDD Application/Domain/Instructure layer with a mediator and FacadeDomain programs. I don't understand the pros and cons of both paradigms.
@Matlus
@Matlus 3 года назад
I wouldn't go to the extent of saying there are pros or cons but rather two different ways of achieving the same end. I developed what I do, independently of DDD. That is both were developed in the same timeframe, independently of each other. My personal take is that DDD is a bit of an overkill and far too academic. What I have been doing is simpler, more real-world and more relatable (if that makes sense). There are a lot of similarities too but with vastly different nomenclature. I believe the core principles are the same. In DDD: Context: The setting in which a word or statement appears that determines its meaning. Statements about a model can only be understood in a context. Model: A system of abstractions that describes selected aspects of a domain and can be used to solve problems related to that domain. Ubiquitous Language: A language structured around the domain model and used by all team members to connect all the activities of the team with the software. Bounded Context: A description of a boundary (typically a subsystem, or the work of a specific team) within which a particular model is defined and applicable. From what I do: Model: Represents a domain entity but is immutable and has only properties but no behavior. In DDD they are not immutable and contain behavior. In DDD my models would be considered anemic models. Bounded Context: I don't call this idea out specifically. But it's important to understand what it means the DDD world as it applies here a well. We don't build monolithic applications anymore so it's not that big a deal but it's still a very important concept to grasp. Look at the sample VS solution I provided a link to ask feel free to asking any questions. I'd be happy to help/answer. Your questions may inspire me to make a video to better explain what I do :).

@@Matlus Your content is amazing. I can see that I will have to spend more time to get involved with DDD and BDD as it is not clear to me. Currently, everyone is trying to use DDD in combination with CQRS and Events sourcing. I don't know if you have used event sourcing in any sample project. I am wondering how to combine the features from your code samples with the DDD approach. For me, the most amazing approach which opened my mind was DomainFacade which separate the logic from the Presentation layer (Possibilities to change only UI). Is any video about ORM's such as EF Core and Dapper was created. I know that the best practice is to use DB procedures /(queries with good indexers). I am wondering what is your opinion of ORM's
@Matlus
@Matlus 3 года назад
@@marcinsiennicki7451 Thank you Marcin! Glad you think so. I'll answer the ORM question first. I don't use ORM. I don't think they are the correct choice for any project unless it is a little toy application. The Movie Service Sample on my GitHub is a good example of using ADO.NET directly. You'll also see how simple it is to use it. The result also has some incredible performance that is faster than an ORM by a long shot. You can use CQRS with with the way I do things along with event sourcing. Of course I'd ask you if you really need any of those things first. I'd also ask if you've watched my Programming with Intent - Method design video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--13KJSZuR9k.html In there I talk and method design and on one part I talk about Query methods and Command methods. Start with that video and implement all of the guidance in that video first. Is there is a lot to learn even before you can implement my type of design upfront :). Take a look at the entire Programming With Intent playlist.

If this is not a problem I could ask for revision and advice. I am currently working on a solution to take data from external systems and process it into XML. I think of a gateway pattern to collect data from external solutions. Users should select what XmlElements need to be in XML. Presentation layer ( WinForms/Blazor/ASP.Core solution I don't know yet) and implementation of the XML elements using Template method. The XML should be sent independently of the user to provided addresses with a specific period of time set by the user in the UI. I will use .net worker service as a windows service and thinking about using HangFire or Quartz.Net package. I created a scheduling custom solution by this is not 100% correct. I did a proof of concept and I have the biggest problems with scheduling and custom XML creation with XML element without XSD (don't know any good source about creation XML using XML elements in .net)
