Absolutely love this channel, as I always recommend it as the best channel for PB tips. But I do have to disagree that you *always* hit the 4th to the deeper player. Especially if the 3rd is high, the shallow opponent is more vulnerable. Also, if the shallow player is a good poacher that has had a lot of success against you, I occasionally go behind them to be less predictable to make it harder for them to poach.

Great point, if you can hit the high ball to the feet of the closer play that can be a winning shot a lot of times

Great job, love the concept of helping or protecting your partner who is coming forward. That tip alone would improve most recreational players success dealing with the 4th.

Extremely helpful instruction. I especially liked the advice of keeping it low to avoid the poacher and I as well appreciate the opportunity for the screen shot summary. I get a lot out of your videos. Very much appreciated!

I think the term "poacher" is unhelpful here. Especially on the 4th shot, the receiving team is at risk of becoming disconnected in a front/back alignment. The general principle in pickleball is that the player who can strike the ball higher and sooner (and often harder) should have right of way. In this situation, higher and sooner can only be the player who is already up at the net. It's not a poach for this player to patrol 14' feet of the net front when crossing the centerline is a natural shot that pressures the opponents. It's _definitely_ a poach if the player steps way out of position to hit a direct winner, with no hope of returning to a natural defense. A poach is when you step out of position in a risky way to intercept a ball your partner could have handled with far less risk. This particular shot is not a poach. If the ball floats through the kitchen on the other side of the centerline, near enough to reach with balance and control, with your partner not yet at the kitchen, this is _your_ ball all the way.

When the third shot is high, wouldn't it be better to hid a hard shot at the feet of the player closest to the net as they have less time to react. If you disagree with this scenario, then, in your opinion, under what circumstances would it be best to target the opponent closest to the net?

How does this strategy work against a 3rd shot drive? If not this strategy, is there a different strategy against a drive 3rd?
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball 7 месяцев назад
Yes, same concepts apply. it can be harder to deal with when the ball is moving faster but keeping the placement in mind helps you keep your team on the offensive

how far into my partners side is ok. I find i almost have to come over 3/4 of the way onto my partners side. 1 opponents usually hits to my partner as they are the weaker player or 2 my partner doesn't come to the kitchen line.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball 8 месяцев назад
any amount is good, as long as you are able to get to where you need to be to defend the next ball back. send your partner this video so you guys work cohesively as a team!

I don't understand points #3 & #4. Who are the deeper players? After the 3rd shot drop, the serving team is supposed to be at the kitchen line already? And also point #4, who's a deeper player? Sorry, I don't understand it 😢.
@johncincolapickleball
@johncincolapickleball 8 месяцев назад
thank you for asking! 1) the deeper player is whichever opponent is closer to the base line (aka further from the net). This is because the further player will have to hit the ball a longer distance, which leaves more room for error. 2) Yes after the 3rd shot, the serving team is working to be at the kitchen line. You don't have to be there immediately after the 3rd shot drop (or drive) but work to get to the kitchen at a pace that is conformable to you. please lmk if you have more questions!
