@@raven-roman-shadow-shaw99y89 it’s mostly applied to digital, what it means is that if you have a major problem in your artwork like an unappealing silhouette or muddy values and such. You should zoom out or “draw small” when you fix it. If it’s something more minor like some less important lines being wobbly then you zoom in or “draw big” when you fix it.

To Resume what he says. -Ignore color focus on values. -Focus in shapes and composition. -Dont waste time on details, specially zooming. -Use a simple setup so you focus more on process than keyboard. -Solve composition in small thumbnail before going full detail in a bigger file. - Kill your babies, if you dont have confidence on the piece and start all over. Dont have fear. - With practice and lots of efforts(years of experience) this will become a second nature, so be patient.

@@DarkestKnight2424 one thing I recommend is get engage in the art activities more. Anything, you can check out artist on various social media, watching anime, funny and entertaining tutorial artist youtube. Last but not least, think of this of it like this. If you really feel like "damn I really wanna draw but then I know it's not gonna turn out well, then it will become a waste of time" 1. Make sure you know the reason you about to draw, whether it's for a project, learning, or having fun, because without knowing your purpose you lose interests very quickly. Therefore you have zero motivation to learn or do anything. Most people tend to overthink, like me. We try to do everything at once. Overdrive the burn to the core. So to make sure to keep mind you remember that. 2. It don't even have to be drawing or painting, if you have photoshop. Makes some memes, fk around with the tools, make a music album cover with labels using ur photos or anything you can find. Have fun with it and u feel tru enjoyment when u realize you been in there for 6 hr. Take it easy and don't be too hard or overthink yourself. You got this

I had a similar experience. I had a deadline for a 1/2 page full color superhero illustration for the roleplaying game Mutants and Masterminds. I, too, saved the file with a blank piece of "digital" canvas... totally wiping out my work. Had to start over, we were having a RARE dinner party that evening and I did this at 4 pm. I almost cried and then threw myself back into the work. I was working at 7:00, as guests had arrived and were already having fun. I got the piece done by 7:30, a piece that usually would take 8 hours. I got it done in 3/12 hours. AND IT WAS BETTER, MUCH BETTER!!! I went and ate and settled in with my friends. I chalked a lot it up to that the first time, the 8 hours were about all these decisions I had to make, making corrections. The 2nd time through, I had made so many of those decisions and the new ones I made were with more confidence.
@jimbeals7711

You were just practicing for 8 hours before you really did the job ;^) I frequently use the term "It's always easier/faster the second time". Usually when my wife or boss or client change their mind. In 40 years of graphics production these things happened more than you can believe. Also when your client wants you to do the same thing over with some "simple changes" it's faster. Or if you have other clients that want similar products to what you did for someone else. Many clients want you for what you do regularly. Is it practice or repetitive work? Maybe both. I'm a print production graphic artist though, not an illustrator. Templates are useful. Don't reinvent the wheel. If I do something new, I try to build in features that will allow me to redo the job with changes faster so I can charge the same, but make more money each time.

@MrFour4th
@MrFour4th 5 лет назад
This is a great video! Thanks for this. But i think this doesn't apply to everyone, especially to young artists. Not saying they can't try this but they have to know, as a guy who just started his professional concept art career 2years ago, I see a lot of young artist out there seeing what Anthony Jones is doing and trying to copy what he's doing at the same time not knowing what they are doing. They tend to sketch fast and randomly just because what they are seeing looks random and ends up with a painting just like Anthony's painting. What these young artist doesn't realise that Anthony has a bunch of true reference in his head, reference that we see everyday, he's designing from something. Not only that, he knows his fundamental. People tend to forget about that and just jump right into what he's doing, and that could hurt them or it could help but more often than not, it hurts them immensely because when someone like me (who knows fundamental) calls out on their mistake they'll disregard it and think "why am i listening to you where im doing exactly what a real pro is doing"
@lenap4956
@lenap4956 5 лет назад
I don't understand what you are saying. Why is it a mistake to copy his method ? What are the traps you are speaking of ? I understand your words individually but I fail to see to point you are trying to make.
@vadkline
@vadkline 5 лет назад
@@lenap4956 he's saying: beginners, when they see this guy painting in 5 minutes, to them it just seems like he's starting from no where and making random brush strokes till it gets into shape, which is not what he's doing. He has an idea of what he's making in his head and fundamental knowledge to direct his sketching, which almost all beginners don't have an idea of. This could be a misdirection since they think "oh I should just copy what this guy's doing and I can get results". Anthony really didn't cover that he took his time learning fundamentals and practicing those fundamentals first
@lenap4956
@lenap4956 5 лет назад
@@vadkline ah ! This makes more sense. Anthony does have a good sense of volume and value. Once these are done, it's a matter of texturing/detailing the painting. Fundamentals are so present yet overlooked that it's easy to forget that any artist worth their shot made a point to master the basic before moving on to more complexe drawings. Thank you for clearing that up.
@vadkline
@vadkline 5 лет назад
@@lenap4956 no problem! There's also some guidelines to the details he adds, where he adds them, how and with what value and shape or form, you really won't be able to detail a creature well if you don't have a visual library of how skin wrinkles and moves and all that, everything is taken into consideration basically
@bereal8253
@bereal8253 Год назад
I'm 3 years late but i just want to add, the other guy on this channel designing characters with the lasso tool made this really clear. He had an entire library in his head of what the skulls of different animals looked like, and could design them accurately from memory without needing any reference. That's something I feel a beginner might miss. He has drawn them so many times, that he can combine different anatomical structures of animals to come up with a "new" creature. If you dont know what the structure of a gorilla's skull is, how are you going to combine it to create new shapes? It took me a while to learn this from his videos as well, but now i understand. I think the key is to first understand (and practise drawing) things that actually exist, _then_ proceed to draw from imagination. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Watching Kim Jung Gi's videos and him do a sketch or Scott Flanders' video about shape carving really puts things in perspective for me their processes are so different, yet they use similar ideas. Just do: you; and study life whilst experimenting. Twist it in a way that fits your needs/preferences and keep at it. In the end your art should reflect what you enjoy doing/seeing.

Technique. Muscle memory. Building skills in stages. Practice. Visualization. Projection. It is possible to use your brain for too much at once, be reasonable on yourself. Switching your behaviors can be unmanageable or effect your interpersonal interactions energy levels or ability to pronounce words. You may also start glossing over more in your work. Look for what you're not thinking of when you feel like your over looking something. Try to take objective criticism. Let small motivational lies be true. Determination may not make you the best artist who ever could be but it's what gets you anywhere at all, so it is key. Trick your brain if you think it helps you work. Know how to switch off when you're not working. People wont usually tell you it's not good to keep that mindset all the time and that in order to learn you will have to learn to slow down too. This guy was one of the first people I followed on deviantart. He was everywhere. Everything he does is like, ''hey check that out, who did that and you realized you already followed him ten times". I think the difficult thing with the teaching is both trying to illustrate the process along with the concepts behind them simultaneously. Big with the small and small with the big. Easier said than done and that's saying alot. Discipline is difficult. Being able to teach all this is even more impressive. I mean jesus, dude.

What it is is that when you can paint fast, you can practice many broad conceptual skills faster. Skills that can only really be practiced upon once per painting/revision. These skills make artists able to exceed. They only come by having time and patience with the revision process. That is the process of doing things multiple times, even if you’re satisfied with the end product (and especially if you are not).

Had to stop the video when he got to the part about practising because that's what I should be doing instead of watching RU-vid...LOL! I'll bookmark this and watch the rest later.

Wow, that's really good advice. I often find myself afraid to make improvements to my work because it'll "take so long". Guess I need to practice until it doesn't! (I'm also a software engineer, and definitely support the concepts of "failing fast" and "rapid iteration"!)

I drew a small scary skull with some blood and meat coming out of it and it looked way better than it would have if I tried to draw it big

I feel very humbled and inspired by this video. My main nitch is drawing demons and monsters so this is terrific advice. I just have one issue. I absolutely cannot draw on a computer. I've practiced for decades on paper and it takes away all of my creativity and motivation. I was just wondering if anyone else felt this way.

Amazing video, thank you very much for the knowledge and experience, you're sharing with us. Listening to your story about "having to draw everything again, because, well, mistake" I think about how much of a goal it is for me to be able to intentionally recreate one of my drawings. Sometimes I draw and the result is a good picture; but I can't draw out of my head, yet. It happens by accident instead of intent. I've never been so determined to become better, to grow and to learn like I am now.
