This was amazingly helpful I just have one follow up question, what is a salary taht a beginner can expect and what kind of increase is averaged at a gaming company because I’m only 13 and this sounds super cool but I want to make solid money, thanks.
Might as well throw down a few tips I’ve learned from a pre college course for concept art, 1. To this college, there are 4 aspects: Environments, Architecture/vehicles, characters, and tools/weapons. It may be good to specialize in one of those categories, but maybe not. 2. Do lots of refining. The process the college showed me was references (many, like 4-10), ideation sketches, refinement, and final render. Find some ideas you like, and mash em together in different ways. Then when you find one you like, tinker around with it till you wanna finish it. 3. Other general tips like letting the viewer feel like a participant when it comes to environmental and architectural drawing, rather than someone watching from far away.
the shapecarver people do a great job at showing how the nitty gritty of ideation goes o/ they do 5 broad variations, then pick one and do 5 more variatons on that specific one, then pick one and do 5 more, sometimes mashing shapes together laterally or from previous drawings. It's a very interesting look at the process
@@christiangiardina4541 some positions expect you to do more than one thing. For example if youre doingn npcs for a village, and then the npcs are done you may be asked to do props, having a side thing on the portifolio may reassure the client
@@christiangiardina4541 it’s not a terrible idea to be a jack of all trades, so you can be reliable in any portion of any project. Stuff like knowing how to draw anatomy while being an environment artist, or knowing participant > witness as a character artist
@@strynger_3507 well i cant still draw good a thing :D but ehy ill work on it when ill have free time (art is a hobby but i like dream of It like a future job ahahah)
Okay, I literally feel like crying after a sudden moment of realisation. All I ever wanted in life was to be an artist and I've been creating art since I was very little. Instead, I'm stuck in an office all day and SETTLING. I never knew how to start or where I'd fit in with the art industry exactly but at 30 years old, I'm now getting an overwhelming feeling of, "I'm just gonna fuckin do it! I want to make art my career". Not sure on specific paths just yet but I'll figure it out along the way. Thank you Marc
I'm 30 and feel the same, work at some shitty factory getting used and tossed aside. I've been putting more energy into art lately since I realised I can't handle this garbage forever. Just gotta go for it.
THANK YOU. ♥️ I am a student of Marc's and one of the two founding members for OwlGhost Studios. Graduating from Marc's school was one of the defining factors to the formation and success of our small studio. If you are reading this, you are in the right place, and taking the steps toward a future in professional digital art. Come join a incredible school by a phenomenal teacher that can lead you to your art dreams as well. ♥️
Really needed a video that covers the concept art career guide, thank you Marc Brunet for helping an aspiring concept artist. ~ Ryan, this is a nice early birthday gift ( May 1st )
thank you for this video!! every other “so you wanna be a concept artist?” video i’ve found has told me there’s a 0.001 chance of actually getting into the profession. i understand it’s a difficult journey, but it’s kinda hard to “follow your dreams” when people say junk like that.
Here are some notes, feel free to copy and learn: Definition of a Concept artist and the Distinction between an Illustrator: Concept artist’s convey ideas in their art while Illustrators create their art to be sold. A concept artist must be creative and be able to convey ideas clearly. A concept artist can be terrible at art but good at conveying ideas, and an illustrator could be terrible at conveying ideas but amazing at art. What to expect: You’ll probably have to move to be closer to the studio. You’ll be drawing all day. …ok halfway through writing this I’ve run out of motivation. You guys can add stuff in the replies
Important thing to note is, as an environment concept artist myself, you wouldnt be just drawing all day. A lot of time you will be working as well in 3d and doing a lot of research (which is good fun too) but not just drawing. Sometimes having callouts to photo references which is more efficient than redrawing it. As well for concept art in terms of social media, from my experience and others which have been doing great on art station but it isnt as populair for posting it on regular platforms like instagram since the work isnt catered to general public.
thank you marc, i been in a state where i was confused to go with my art and this video reverted my mind on why i wanted to make art, making characters and imagining their stories. got stuck in a loop where i just do drawing and not caring for the characters i did, like a empty vessels that has no soul, well something like that but yeah .... and again thank you
This comes at a great time for me as I’ve just started sending out applications for concept art jobs here in Tokyo, thanks for the advice as always Marc
So glad you didn't shy away from the controversy when covering the downsides to the job. I have no intention of becoming a professional artist, but your videos have been very helpful nonetheless. Thanks a bunch for all your hard work!
Just joined your Art School for Digital Artists 2022 right after watching this video! I will be a character concept artist. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experiences, Marc.
this struck me deep and reassured me im on the right track. i am a highschool student about to head into the adult world and so very ready. these tips helped so much. thank you!
Just signed up to Art School! Been subscribed for 4+ years and have always appreciated all of your videos. I never took the leap before and finally feel like its the right time. Thank you for the content Marc!! 😌
YES YES YESSS!!! Thank you for this video!! I’ve been wanting to be some sort of artist in the creative industry for all my life and watching this video has really helped me lean more towards learning how to grow as an artist and hopefully be a concept artist one day ! Have a great day man you’re the best
Going into my final year of Illustration at University, hearing that I should specialise in EITHER character or environment was a godsend just because I've recently been trying to do both and not focussing my full effort into either. As someone who is more confident with environment, I feel like I am going to spend my time and all my effort into developing that skill to hopefully have an interesting portfolio by the end of my degree.
Hey Marc! I decided to start pursuing concept art as a career two years ago and you were one of the first artists I found through your Chroma island series. Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to take the step! I am finishing my master's in concept art and illustration in July and I am so close to making my dream come true after so much work, and a huge part of it was your videos!! On another note, one thing I have noticed is that actually the level of polish people expect from concept art is rising radiply due to having so much competition. So it is true that it's not to the point of illustrators, but I think it's still sooo much more polished than what I had expected at first coming into concept and hearing that for the first time. But I guess that's fair, it's about who is skilled enough to give the most in the smallest amount of time.
Thank you for this info! This is EXACTLY the info I've been looking for to know how to navigate my portfolio toward the kind of job I want! I create a lot of artwork but been a little lost as to what to really include in my portfolio. I see a lot of us are working hard to break into the industry, and many of us working (non-creative) office day jobs to pay rent/etc. But we NEED to keep going, keep drawing, keep posting our work to be more visible if we want that art career!
This video is so perfect for me, thank you! I'm literally doing concept art right now as my personal investigation in graphic design and you're my main inspiration. You helped me improve my art and concepts so much
10 years into my art journey and watching 3 and a half minutes into this video I'm realizing that I've tried to be both an illustrator and a concept artist and maybe that's why I occasionally struggle with certain aspects of both
You helped me so much with your tutorials I was in school when I started watching you, now I finally actually got a position in a games studio where I make concept art & illustrations everyday!
@@silver7706 I went to a local games conference and those are great because theres always a board with "We Want You!" Concept art is quite a luxury thing in most studios these days with most just having a whole art department with specialists on certain things. I picked up a few of the papers and actually went around and asked about it cuz at the game conferences there was a lot of the studios present with a few people, truly a great place for first impressions and building up trust and relationships, in my case a studio called Ashborne games was rlly friendly and it was a lot of friendly people at Game Acess 22, a conference where I live, I contacted them, went on a interview and now I've been working for them in-studio for over 2-half wait almost maybe 3 months now time flies, a lot of places IRL or even sites like art station list a lot of open positions, I def. recommend to atleast give it a try, there's always a room for jobs and always a room for creativity! Good Luck on your art journey! :D
I like these vids, it always nice to get more insight into the world and industry of art. I personally don't intend to make art a career, but it's still good to know.
Heyo, Marc! I was thinking of going into college for architecture so that i could hopefully support myself while trying to chase my dreamjob as a concept artist but I wanted to get advice on whether im doing the right thing or not. Ive been working a ton on my fundamentals (finally bought your full course a few months ago hehe) and i still plan to while i attend the school. Sorry if thats long-winded lol.
i want to do the exact same thing! Im currently first year architecture student but ive always wanted to become a concept artist, and my desire has only grown whilst taking this course
but honestly architecture is soo time consuming and also very long winded so only take it if it interests you. however i think the course will help give you skills for concept art as you will be drawing a lot of buildings!
This is why I’ve been studying your work religiously 😅 I wanna maybe work on OW or WOW someday😅. What better way to fast track my progress than learning from an industry vet.
What a coincidence! I am making concept art for a game right now. It's not a paying gig, more like just some fun with my bros, but it feels good to get some experience! Thanks for the tutorial, and for the ArtSchool. This discount makes me wish I waited to buy the course 😅
Sup lil bro. It's you, from two years in the future. You got better at art. A lot better. You haven't made your move into a full art career just yet, but things are looking up. I'm glad you stuck with it.
I have wanted to be a concept artist since I first laid eyes upon the concept art from Metroid Prime, my first real inspiration and I have just recently at 31 figured out what art style I like. I have barely really touched too much actual conceptual art. I went to college for traditional art and I learned almost nothing other than what I already knew (like using references and doing studies). But I squandered that chance and relationships got in the way. If there is one thing I learned that in college, relationships (other than mutual or friendship) can wait.
I'm just looking for the portfolios concept artists who got hired submitted. What does it look like? I feel like that's the best benchmark for everyone who aspires to be one.
Thanks for the tips Marc! I started taking art classes this month and will be a student for a while, mostly in hopes of improving my art skills and learn whatever I can to expand my knowledge and abilities. Once I've advanced enough I hope I can come to you for some further guidance in being a concept artist 😁👍
thank you mark i totally appreciate the tips and advice. it was kinda stressful thinking of the ways to go about it and hearing you explain some ways really help. i truly appreciated the map because i live in the north east and didn’t think i had any possible opportunities around here... granted they still aren’t as good like jobs in cali and illinois but something is better than nothing and i’m glad i have these options to exploit thanks to you. you have a great life sir!
Hi Marc, your video's are always incredibly informative! I would really love to see a video with a compilation of simple drawing excersises that you can do daily that help improve on fundamentals and constructive drawing. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Marc! Do you think you could make a video like this about options on how to make a living of your art independently without doing NSFW art? This such as sharing stuff on patreon, passive earning and not so many commissions to avoid burnout?
Honestly want to try and move away from game programming and get into the art design etc 😅 sooo I have no job currently and figured I’ll give this artschool a shot lol hopefully itll be what I need 👌
Man i just graduated high school and now I'm so lost on what to pursue. I wanna be rich and be a entrepreneur but i really love art and have a passion on it than anything else. I'm so lost now.
u do such great work... I used to play WoW @ one time but have since moved on. But I am loving watching your work and am learning a ton.... though I am still getting the cofidence to go from tactile media to the digitalpad =) . Your videos help with that!!!
pretty good and informative video, any chance of an updated guide of becoming an illustrator? (not that the other wasn t good, but every information you give is precious)
Estoy muy agradecido por tus consejos marc, ya decidí elegir el concept art, comprare tu cursos de arte, quisiera mejorar alguna habilidades en la ropa y en las perspectivas 🙏☺
The social sacrifice you mentioned is nothing I haven't already experienced already. I sacrificed many hours as a science major just crammed in a dark room studying for hours on end. It just so happens that (at least to me) my art hobby has some real potential, and if I was able to put those study hours in for those mind numbing science courses then I can do the same for learning art fundamentals, in fact it doesn't feel like a sacrifice to me, as the saying goes a job won't feel like a job if you love what you do.
não sei falar ingles bem ainda, mas acabei de quitar o meu trabalho no mc donalds pra me dedicar ao meu sonho, e ironicamente quando chego em casa vc manda um video sobre, obrigado universo
Genshin is also another game that was screaming at me to continue drawing but eventually, I'm going to have to move digitally, when I get a better drawing tablet since I use my phone.
You make me appreciate the fact that we had comic book illustration and animation in art school.... As a 19 y o I just thought it was just a fuck ton of work haha cause every move should be portrayed just for one character haha Thanks for this 😘 🥴as a lady its kind of awkward to get into this industry. Thanks for making this video and unconciously making me confident with my work Have a great day wherever you are! Sending love from Manila! 😘
This video is very informative! can you do one similar but for illustration, I know its the industry I want to get to and its almost as competitive as concept art :)
