I love key foundational principles. They mean SO much more than "put your hand here, move your hips this way." That true of any discipline but it really shines in jiu jitsu.

Purple belt here. I like playing a highly mobile, active top game. But I've recently started noticing the value of patience in a dominant position. It's improved my top retention and submission rate by a lot.

White belt here and I'm fortunate enough to have also recently realized that. For me being patient while isolating a limb or planning to isolate one has been profoundly helpful

Brown belt, and same boat as you. I've also realizing now that I'm in my mid 30's (and wanting to develop a game to train for life) that if I want to prioritize longevity, that it might be a good idea to focus on being more patient and cooking people from the top. I've always been fairly ADHD and will move to different movements or positions if the action slows down. But now I'm finding that focusing on top retention (like what you said) is seeming like a good bet for letting me roll longer without getting tired, and letting me roll for more years. Basically, I'm in total agreement with you.

3 stripe purple 145lber. Same about having a mobile game but lately I've been enjoying cooking people with pressure and they all have been suprised how heavy 145 really is when you put it in the right spots and settle

Good stuff bra, I’m so quick to think I can “catch” people with a singular move - opposed to slowly setting them up like a boa constrictor waiting for you to take a breath and then clinches a hair tighter and so on..
