Original Battle: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8S9vcM6Oc6E.html
We use DCS World to re-visit a battle between twenty F-22 Raptors and one hundred Su-35 Flankers. The previous attempt highlighted some technical deficiencies in the way set set the battle up, creating curious results. This time we tweak some technical details and let's see what difference it makes.

I noticed with the most recent dcs update that all modded missiles seemed to have been broken. They no longer follow the optimal ballistic curve trajectory at range, in fact sometimes not even loft at all. They just make a straight bee-line towards the hostile aircraft until the internal seeker head can find it. The missiles are acting as if they were fired from close range with no arc or loft, rather than acting as if they were fired at long range where they would have that optimal arc.

Humans just knowingly (or subconsciously) will exploit any weakness in the system. Like Birderino knowing the aircraft were programmed not to defend themselves after they were out of AIM-260s. After the 30:00 mark, he was surrounded by at least 7 F-22s with active Aim-9Xs that would have had a collective kill rate of around 1100% as all of them would have been targeting his one aircraft.

One of the advantages the F-22 has in these fights is that it doesn't have to fire the missile at max range but can wait for a better probability of kill because its stealth configuration protects it even in relatively advanced positions, unlike the F-15, for example.

I can tell you right now a 100 flight of aircraft would be a logistical nightmare even for countries like China to maintain an assault pattern. Losing 80 aircraft in a single 30 minute engagement is a death sentence for a major nation. Even if China or Russia had 500 of the aircraft available you are going to lose some of your most experienced pilots in a major engagement like this, and that hurts the most.
@denverchin44
@denverchin44 10 месяцев назад
But releasing all of those hundred jets are the worst war situation that the target can really not get out without exploding. During WW2, there were thousands of aircrafts been used but not as deadly as the present jet fighters. If Russia or China dares to go a mission using 100 of fighter jets, I assure you, that will be the nightmare of everyone of us not only to the target.
@Spartan536
@Spartan536 10 месяцев назад
@@denverchin44 Modern air war is entirely different than WW2. Its not just the speeds and performance that is different its the communication and weapons systems that are. IFF is a major player, and when operating that many aircraft FF incidents become much more likely, its even happened to US aviators in the Gulf War. The real war for the air will be fought in space, where communication, navigation, and IFF systems are vulnerable, once those are gone the enemy is doomed.

I appreciate your missions not being scripted!! It's better to get a fresh take in real time, and long time viewers appreciate the process. I think one of the most important things is that you are testing the technology to the limit!! You never make the missions easy, it is always a challenge, and this viewington really appreciates that!! I honestly didn't think the Raptors would be able to finish the job just due to the number of missiles they were carrying requiring such a high probability of kill, but you nailed it with the rotations of successive flights covering each other!! Great flying as always Grim Reapers, and damn good strategy by Super Cap for the win!!

Prediction prior to watching the fight: AIM-260 doesn't have a high enough PK for 120 missiles to take out 100 enemy jets. In the real world I'd put my money on the F-22s still. A big part of it is the human aspect, as you're going to get higher gains in a human flown 5th gen jet than a human flown 4th gen jet (taking advantages of the unique technology differences). I also believe the general PK of US missiles is higher than in DCS.

F-22's need a full loadout of AIM-9X ... especially if they could load 2 AIM-9X for each AIM120. I feel like the Raptors and particularly any after the first flight need more missiles with shorter range and more acceleration for the look up - shoot up requirements of the tactical situation they end up in. ---edit--- Adding to your summary, firing at a shorter distance reduces the flight time and thus reduces the chances of deconfliction issues.

For anyone truly wondering some our best forgetter pilots. In F-15’s everyone knows the reputation and capabilities at a base level, well F-15’s with some of the very best pilots the US can make, stand zero chance against F-22…we’ve played these war games many times. No comparison, before the F-22 the F-15 was hailed as the air superiority fighter, the best of all time. The F-22 is it’s replacement. The F-15 doesn’t hold a candle to the F-22. It’s multiple leaps ahead of it, people say 4th vs 5th gen, sure in progress that’s the case. In reality of what they do and can do. It’s two generations ahead, the F-35, even with some troubles it has, is realistically 3 generations ahead for most reasons, but seems how still conventional propulsion and weapons, 5th gen is accurate and useable.

@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper 9 месяцев назад
No, nothing in any country's arsenal has that ability. It would require full autonomy of the targeting computer, where the missile itself designates what it believes to be targets rather than the pilot. That could lead to a whole host of unintentional kills and friendly fire...it's akin to putting a gun into the hands of a computer or AI to use at its discretion with no oversight. Or sending a UAV out with no target in mind and programming it to simply shoot at anything that looks like a valid target, things could get real ugly real quick. The alternative would be to update the targeting computer remotely from the aircraft after a miss, though that in itself would have a host of logistical issues and technical challenges, including but not limited to enemies jamming that connection or hacking your missiles and diverting them to intercept your own aircraft. Then of course you have to consider that when a missile is closing in on a kill, it basically expends all of its speed, propellant, and kinetic energy to make that kill...particularly when talking about a long range missile that climbs to the upper atmosphere and dives down for the intercept, not unlike a miniature ICBM meant for aerial targets. After a miss, most of the ballistic advantage of a near-hypersonic missile is already spent, unless it was fired at a really close range in a last ditch effort, in which case it's unlikely there will be a secondary target with any intercept potential. It seems like a waste when you're watching them fly off harmlessly, and it would be great if there was a way to get a second chance out of a failed intercept, but current tech simply isn't there yet and the physics is against you right out of the box.

Do you think it'd be possible to modify the seeker on an AIM-120D or AIM-260 to handle higher transmission powers and mount it onto a jet? That's another thing that would have been better the first time were there 20 blue humans. Third most useful change is RTB, that helped big time to get it from halfway done to fully repelled. Least useful is probably the AIM upgrade, I suspect the same result would occur if you kept all settings the same but went back to the 120D. Getting that Pk up had more to do with telling the AI to not be stupid (coordination and range) than the missile itself, I suspect.

Not to mention the fact that the 22 does have a fun an a human pilot would fight back rather than be duck shot by a flankers gun

You should let both teams approach on Vmax at max altitude where they can deliver their missles, full package, full speed, then escape at max speed. Let's see what planes and missiles outrun their counterparts by speed and fuel consumption! Do this again but stack them in 2 or 3 waves !

I'm always surprised how bad the target deconfliction is, even with modern missiles. I don't see why it would be difficult to have the missiles communicate with each other in occasional brief data bursts. I'd assume that's coming in the next generation. Along with visual target tracking that doesn't rely on IR or radar.
@afterthefact6708

Thats generally done by the actual pilots, they call their targets. No human pilots would fire 5 missiles at 1 low flying plane.

I wonder what the results would be if there was a group of F-22s equipped with missiles that are better at lower altitudes.

I don't remember watching the first version of this match but this version was awesome. Do F-15C Vs. J-20. We started the process of withdrawing our Eagles from Kadena not too long ago. I think the USAF concluded that against China's growling fleet of 5th gen fighters, the Eagles wouldn't be very survivable.
@t74guard78
@t74guard78 9 месяцев назад
In reality, the J-20 is a 4.5 gen fighter at best. The F-15C is a 1980 aircraft. The best air superiority fighter in history is past it's prime. But with it's being flown by superior pilots, it could still punch a hole in a squadron of J-20. Because of it's age, it would probably lose but it would go down fighting and make the cost for China a pretty big one. Just replace them with a single F-22 squadron and what ever numbers of J-20 the Chinese could throw at them would be useless. They would all get shot down with very minimal loses to the F-22, if any. Chinese pilots don't even have retired pilots with combat experience they could learn from and their training isn't no where near as good or realistic as what American pilots go through. I have to laugh whenever I see people talking about aircraft vs aircraft. The aircraft involved have some to do with a fight but it's mostly decided by the pilots flying them. American pilots along with the Israeli pilots are the best in the world. I wouldn't count out an old F-15C flown by an American pilot against any enemy aircraft. Of course a F-22 flown by an American pilot, you have the best aircraft flown by the best pilots. That is an unbeatable situation against any other aircraft flown by any other pilot in the world.

I hope some one of worth has watched this, and will take what you have done a put some more polish upon it, for one having more missiles available, like Aim-9s for the returning with some gun crews to rearm the aircraft to get them back in the mix!

@@grimreapers The IR will tell the Russians the F-22's are there, especially when the 22's turn tail to head home. The Russians should have saw them with IR then turned on their radar and locked them up. Long story short.. you aren't stealth when radar goes right up your exhaust.

The su-35 Would have notched all these missles, or turned and out run them… Counter measures and pilot ability… The multi target line of sight fire and forget of the f22 would only be helpful for long range battles… Not sure why the sU 35 ran out of fuel, but they would have closed the distance very quickly and very likely would engage in dog fights with the f22… Paired with updates … the migs and sU fight in pairs… together… with combined arms warfare… There aren’t enough f22s to actually deploy against others offensively… even with its 1-100 combat effectiveness in theory… it’s a defensive and surprise platform not a dog fighter… But in the hands of an ace… it’s quite capable.

I’d imagine a teaming of F-35 and F-15EX in the same number would be more effective, as the F-35 could also do some EW against the Sukhois, and the F-15s would bring lots of rounds.
