I analyze the plans for the Battle of Winterfell and offer my own improved strategy based on a defense in depth. In this video I use historical military strategy to offer proper commentary the siege from Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 "The Long Night".

Very cool plan, I was unable to watch the episode in one sitting so I may have forgotten details. How much time went by between the fall of the wall and the night kings arrival? Couple they have deployed a plan of this kind? Instead of bickering on who was the rightful heir/ess
@BelleDividends
@BelleDividends 5 лет назад
Very excellent plan. Only one question: what if the undead decide to starve you? We've seen hints the living lack the logistics to sustain their huge forces in the north. My solution: defend at a suitable place more to the south, buy you more time for further reinforcements and logistics, while evacuating the whole north and using guerrilla tactics as you mentioned.

This plan is maybe too good that maybe the Night King can run away for another day. There is also a "wind wall" on the dead's side. Seems not so easy for the hunt.

I really don't think they were intending to do a semi-realistic portrayal like they did with the Battle of the Bastards or the Sack of Kings Landing. They used the entire battle as a horror movie set up for the final pay off to deliver an emotional crescendo which realistic battles really don't do. Sometimes art goes for realism, sometimes it just tries to provoke emotion.

winterfell in the books has two layers of walls and a moat in between. winterfell is a formidable castle made puny looking in the show
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 4 года назад
meh, i don't think Winterfell in either the book or the show is really in a strategically valuable or historically accurate location. On the map it's literally in the middle of a giant plain with no natural border or defensive capacity to it. Compared to the Eyrie, which is a massive fortification on the top of a massive rock protrusion in the middle of a vast serrated outcropping of broken ground, impassible gorges, dead ends, and specific vectors of approach. Winterfell is a completely man-made structure in a field, some hundred miles away from a legitimate water source. Even Edoras in Middle-Earth, exploits a natural defense in the form of a giant rock protrusion; but even they had a harder, fall-back position in Helm's Deep.
@militustoica
@militustoica 4 года назад
Winterfell was not in a tactically advantageous position militarily in most ways, but strategically it was roughly the same distance to every great Northern keep and had a hot springs to endure winter sieges better.
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 4 года назад
@@militustoica a 'hot spring' would not have been able to provide the required water to sustain the daily needs of a holding/village the reported size of winterfell. There's a reason why 99% of humanity has lived and still lives within 50 miles of a coastline or major water way. Remember, a human can live for weeks without food, but they can only live for hours without water. They would have needed a major river or canal just to transport the required supplies to keep the city supplied. wagon trains simply wouldn't have worked. You need water for drinking, cooking, sanitation, and to provide a source for marine proteins and irrigation. They would have needed wells every two feet, and their reservoir would have been tapped 100 years before aegon landed.
@militustoica
@militustoica 4 года назад
maxdecphoenix In the first chapters with Cat and Maester Lewyn, Ned thinks about how he gave her a room directly over the warmest channels. It’s used to heat the walls, floors, and wells. Also as a paramedicine student and a former soldier, it’s about 3 days average without water and 6 weeks without food for the average sized person. If the apparently extremely hot Spring (I am happy to admit I know nothing about hot springs besides a correlation between temperature and geothermal heat sources) is used to thaw out the wall we’ve seen in Winterfell as well as then kitchens, barracks, rooms, and other places that need to be kept warm can be comfortable to rotate your soldiers on watch and staff level officers into and out of while the guys outside are freezing solid, that’s a huge attritional advantage.
@militustoica
@militustoica 4 года назад
maxdecphoenix As for the supplies, if Winterfell’s famously prepared Stark Lords and subsequent conquerors had even a fraction of sense of the Night’s Watch, they would have an explicitly described 3 year long larder buried underground as Castle Black did. Remember episode 1 of the show?House Stark is the only Great House of Westeros to choose a warning rather than a boast as its words.

Loot Train Attack had reasonable tactics on both sides. Lannister Side: The spear wall was a good idea. Had to be thin because they had to cover a lot of ground to protect their objective, the wagon trail. Archers behind and even on the island in the river bed were also a good idea, and bringing the scorpion almost got a dragon killed. Dothraki side: Full on cavalry charge with that numerical advantage against a shield wall only two men deep is perfectly acceptable. Even better, to help the Dothraki, Dany had Drogon burn a breach into the shield wall for the Dothraki to get through and flank and roll up the Lannister lines. Burning the loot a.k.a. the Lannister's objective was smart as well. Honestly, their isn't much either side could've done better.

"Reanimated peasants with bread knives cut through plate armor like butter'" Exactly what I thought when the Night King drove the broken, wooden spear shaft through Theon's plate armor.
@DJMavis
@DJMavis 5 лет назад
I think Theon's armour was leather. And he can also throw a magic ice javelin an extraordinary distance with unparalleled speed and accuracy. He was kind of magic. Very few have proper plate, the northmen are mostly in leather with some mail and the odd bit of plate. The entire unsullied wear leather. The Dothraki wear bugger all. Jon was wearing a tunic. I think Brienne and Lady Mormont had full plate, even Jamie only had brigandine on his chest. There were a fair few pauldrons kicking about and the knights of the Vale looked well armoured, but most weren't at all. I suppose it's possible that the North's seemingly padded leather could have been jack of plates, but I have never seen any plates exposed and I think most were just in leather.
@OddHaberdasher
@OddHaberdasher 5 лет назад
That was the one part of the episode I had no problems with, actually. Get a thousand monkeys with typewriters and they may eventually give you Shakespeare, get ten thousand zombies with bread knives and they'll probably find a way through plate. As for Theon, the Night King has already been shown to have many abilities, including no selling dragonfire. Might as well give him super strength while we're at it.

Yes. Northmen, Unsullied, Jon, Lyanna, Pod and Theon and a few others are leather and chain mail. Dothraki were literally animal fur clothing. Knights of the Vale, Brienne were plate armour. But with the whole Night King killing Theon with a sharp pole I guess checks out seeing as he could go all Achilles with his javelins and snipe dragons out of the sky..
@jayrinaldi
@jayrinaldi 5 лет назад
Besides the fact that there weren't many plate armor present, knifes are actually very effective against plate armor. especially once a knight in plate armor fell, it was usually the best bet to get a knife and stab him at the weak points (under helmet, under the arm, etc...) But besides that I cringed about every 5min in this episode. some basic battle tactics lessons for the writers would work wonders. *sigh*

Winterfell in the books had something like 80 foot high outter walls, then a deep wide moat, then like 100 foot high inner walls. Also, there are theories that because of the way winterfell was constructed using old god magic and the weirdwoods, that it is possible undead can't actually go within winterfell in the first place and would just pop like they did when trying to enter the Three Eyed Crow's place. Then the TV show does this...

Uh ... As in most movie plots - like Star Wars - there is a single point of failure where the nearly defeated good guys can attack - that wipes out the enemy that had been winning. That single point of failure for the Army of the Dead - was the Night King. So your basic strategy here - is to delay the un-dead long enough to get at the Night King and kill him. 1) Your best weapons are fire, Valaryan (sp?) Steel and dragon glass 2) Have several lines of fire pits to delay the un-dead with Artillery in the Castle launching burning projectiles into their ranks as they bunch up at the obstacles. 3) Have the ground between the fire pits covered in something that would burn readily - such as straw - though with the snow that might not work but tree branches and anything else that would burn. 4) Have your cavalry stationed outside the battle area until the dragons located the Night King. The dragons drop off Arya and she tries to sneak up on the Night King and kill him from behind. If she fails the light cavalry and mounted nights attack. 5) Have the cavalry get around behind the army of the dead and hit the Night King from behind - using dragon glass arrow heads and Valaryan Steel. The thing here is that the writers - as did most writers of Disaster Films - have the good guys behave with utter stupidity - to set up the desperate dramatic situation that they want to achieve. Martin had written the books well and seems to have understood something about what he was writing about - but once the series ran out of his books the TV Writers gave us a demonstration of how good he had been in contrast to their feeble efforts. .

Also (after the first trench) I would have had several pits and traps dug and have the pits lined and covered with spikes, tar, pitch, oil, wildfire, and anything else remotely combustible. I would conceal the pits so the enemy couldn’t see them. Then would have ordered the archers to rain fiery hell on the undead as they fell into these pits. This could have been done! Honestly getting these materials should have been the first thing on Jon’s list when he first went on his quest to go south and get dragonglass! Taking into account how hard it is to dig into a frozen soil, i wouldn't have focus much effort into digging a single trench. However, the unmanned barricade would be a "must have". However, i would equip the dothraki with slings : easy to make, relatively easy to aim at a literal wave of undead ; the dothrakis could serve as a first artillery line and throw all kind of makeshift projectiles from at least half a kilometer away from the wall. Once the undead within reach from the main artillery weapons, the dothrakis could abandon their slings and switch to skirmishing the vanguard of the undead army. The next barricade line wouldn't be a trench, but rather, a frozen snow wall : easy to make, it would consist of simply pilling up as much snow as possible and simply water ovee the exterior side, to make it as slippery as possible, while strenghtening it. The snow wall would have to be intermittent, as we don't want the undead to get around the fortification ; but rather clog up their advance toward the last barricade. Built within archer range from the walls, i would double their line with slingers pulled from all the able bodied within the walls. The third barricade woud be composed of pyres ; to disrupt the ranks of undead, and offer visibility to the archers on the walls ; and wooden stakes, disposed in chevrons, littered with bundles of dry wood/forage, soaked in oil. The defenders could then lit the barricades themselves, before retreating, earning some time to regain the wall. Once the infantry retreat within the wall, the unsullied should take the vanguard and bloc every street with shield wall, will other fighters would join the walls and repel the enemy there. From the south, the dothrakis cavalry could re-enter the castle. Within the narrow streets, their cavalry charges would be enough to trample stranded, scattered undeads. breaching the unsullied lines of defenses. From the rooftops, women, elderly and children could throw whatever at hands on the undead too. And if that's not enough, too bad, we're fucked. Obviously, both dragons would be used to swipe the flanks and the vanguard of the wave of undead, to stay out of reach from the ice javelins, and keep the undead from following te dothrakis in their retreat. They would also serve as an asset to keep the zombie dragon busy, while avoiding direct confrontation, once the second barricade is reached, as we don't want them melting down the snow-wall...

Also have the Dothraki use their superior mobility to try and locate and kill the White Walkers. Each of them killed would take down hundreds, if not thousands of zombies. For that reason, the NK would try to keep them safe in the rear, but with the bulk of the dead committed to attacking the castle, they would thus be (comparatively) lightly defended.

Your strategy would have worked perfectly and I'd expect before they start to piling up on the walls their numbers would have decreased to half or even a quarter. When the dead pass the last outer barrier to the wall, after most of them piled up send the dothraki to flank them again a bit further from the back, and archers fires arrows around the clock and spill some oils from the top of the walls and ignite them when they start to stair up the walls. With perfect positioning of the dothraki won't get caught by the livings' attacks. Follow the instructions perfectly and I dare to say 80-90% chance the wights wouldn't have enough numbers to counter attack the flank groups nor siege the walls, meaning the battle inside the wall part is unlikely to happen

The problem with Thebean tactics and guerilla warfare is that the Dead have neither logistical line nor foraging parties. They don't need them. The problem with most tactics is that they are designed to break the enemy, without killing the Night King the undead simply don't break. Ever. At all. They would fight to the last zombie, even in attack. They cannot be made to fear, they cannot starve, they cannot run out of water. They will just keep coming and absolutely will not stop. It's why Arya's training as the faceless man, and the ability to move silently even to the undead, were so important - so she could evade and penetrate the Night King's forces to slay the Night King.

Very nice analysis indeed!! Actually a few night ago I was again contemplating about the battle between living and the dead, and was thinking the best thing the living should have done is to constantly harass the dead army, evacuate everyone and retreat towards Moat Cailin and further south towards The Twins where the decisive battle should have been fought. They should have mined the crossing and when it was full with dead men just blow it up. The idea was to make sure that the Night King crosses the bridge before, which he would have done if Bran was there. While a well trained guard was defending Bran(not some children and a dickless guy) the main bulk of the army should have engaged the dead on the other side of the river. If everything was properly planned the living should have been able to kill the Night King in combat, either using dragon glass or Valeryian steel(perhaps all the Valeryian steel holders should have formed a squad) not mysteriously by an adolescent jumping 500 meters and stabbing him. The dead were know for their stamina, fearlessness and partial immortality but were basically stupid, charging without keeping ranks and could not overcome water lines. These advantages should have been exploited by the living and the fact that were not it's a great tragedy indeed.

Dothraki dragon glass chariots/ muddy trenches to slow down giants and enemies/u shaped fortification to blob up the enemy and then bombard with artillery/ utilize long spears/ bunch of wooden logs spiked with dragon glass placed on top of the wall to be set on fire and hurled towards the dead/ reserve dragon fire until the enemy is near the walls send Dothraki chariots on the flanks for cycle charges /try to break up the castle into sealable compartments, if over run seal and set on fire/ designate and establish a secondary fortification within the castle and escape route if needed. the only thing that's really a game-changer is the undead dragons mobility I think if the walls are able to succeed at holding back the horde of the dead the night king would try to attack the wall, a hit and run tactic from the 2 dragons would work in that scenario.

@@roykrum3478 On the other hand, according to the Battle of Qohor, the Dothraki absolutely *will* charge heavy infantry formations head-on like yutzes without bothering to do flanking or use their horse archery. Seriously: 20,000 Dothraki cavalry vs. 3,000 Unsullied, in an open field battle, and the Dothraki lose 12,000 (supposedly). Now, if those had been Mongols or Parthians (who actually understand that horse archers can ride circles around infantry without getting a scratch) , the Unsullied would've been killed at range with minimal losses on the Dothraki part. But then again, the Dothraki are *discount* Mongols, and thus, too incompetent to use skirmishing tactics.' I've been saying it since at least season 4: the Dothraki are a terrible fighting force. Consider: until Season 6, we'd seen more *Westerosi* horse archers in action than Dothraki horse archers (Ramsey's hunters tried to shoot either Theon or Brienne from horseback, while we wouldn't see a Dothraki horse archer until S7 E5 at the Battle of the Goldroad, and even then, they only use horse-archery as part of a frontal cavalry charge vs. heavy infantry.) They place a great deal of emphasis on closing to melee with off-brand Egyptian Kopeshes, which totally wastes the potential of steppe cavalry. EDIT: I'd also like to note that in the books, the Dothraki army that lost at Qohor was 50,000, not 20,000. Even more shameful display.

That’s another reason for wooden defenses, they’d essentially act as booby traps that would cut off the first or second wave that breaks through each line of defense. The Dothraki mounted archers should have been equipped with dragonglass arrows. they could ride around the force of wights and go directly for the white walkers in the rear. That would maximize the damage to the enemy.
@diegoderiverabyrne6557

There is a problem with that, visibility, away from the castle fires, there was black pitch darkness. You cant surround an enemy army if you cant see how far that army extends. It was possible that the only way to do that was going thru the woods around Winterfell, and you can imagine how dangerous would be to ride at high speed, without light (even with moon light) the snow covering the rocks and roots of the trees, more dothraki would die from falling than to the undead. (sorry for my bad english)

Someone should make a game called "How I would do it". In which it simulates a WhiteWalker attack and you are to set up your Winterfell defense. Everytime a strategy worked the game takes a screenshot of the successful formation and it automatically get tweeted to Benioff and Weiss with the caption "Like this for example you idiots".

@Lazy Gamer I think you're exactly right. I think it's silly to believe that the dothraki would have done anything other than charge. I mean, it shocked me for a moment when they did, I was like hey guys no, no-one gave that order. But their whole culture is focused around this kind of aggressive viking mentality where dying a glorious death is enough of a goal in life. We don't want them to die because we've grown to know and like the dothraki, so we hate on the idea that they would do this because we are emotionally invested in them. But we are emotionally invested in them because of good story telling. If you focus on the characters and the culture conveyed in the story, it doesn't make sense in the story for the dothraki to not charge. This was all on point story telling in my mind.

Guy:oh okay, that helps if we get our men- Jon: the trench needs to be small enough to allow only a handful of men to run between. Maybe six men a breast at most. Guy:what? Trenches are meant to be behind- Jon: then the dothraki will charge the center. Guy:...you're not listening to me are you?
