Happy weekend Y'all!
Today we're turning our attention to a classic (ish) cocktail that may have helped rename the classic cocktail. (The Old Fashioned)
The Improved Whiskey Cocktail was just that. It took "The Whiskey Cocktail" and improved upon it. (I know, we're really pulling a muscle coming up with names here)
As bartenders started getting... well... fancier... so did their ingredients and so did their drinks, so along comes the Improved Whiskey Cocktail.
Taking the main stays of SPIRIT + SUGAR + BITTERS = ENJOY and adding modifiers to the equation to really bring out other essences in the cocktail, while still playing up the spirit itself.
2oz of whiskey (rye)
1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur
1/4 oz Simple syrup
2 dashes of Bokers Bitters**
1 dash of Absinthe
Lemon peel
We start with a cooled mixing glass full of ice.
We can either rinse our cocktail glass with absinthe, spritz in absinthe to get the same effect, or add a dash or two to the cocktail, I chose the latter route as I had a new dasher bottle I wanted to try out.
Add our Simple, bitters, Maraschino, and Whiskey (and maybe our absinthe) to our mixing glass, and stir until diluted and condensation starts forming on the outside of the glass.
(I'm using Sagamore Rye here, but absolutely dealers choice, 116 proof might not be necessary, but I probably wouldn't dip much further from 100)
Strain and pour over a fresh ice cube/ball/shape/etc.
Garnish with a Lemon peel.
And Enjoy!
For an added flavour bonus, add a little lemon juice to the rim of the cocktail glass.
This cocktail is wonderful, subtle, complex, flavourful, and for the 23rd time today, delicious!
