From SantaBarbaraLactation.com: This is the seventh and final video in a series describing how effective positioning promotes effective latching. In this video I describe ways to troubleshoot a latch and improve positioning. The goal with any position is the get the nipple far back and to the roof of the baby's mouth. The baby's tongue must also be able to extend and cup the breast.
The most important aspects of an effective latch are:
The baby has full tummy contact with the mother's body.
The baby feels stable.
The baby's head is aligned with his spine, not turned or tilted to the right or left.
The baby reaches up to take the breast.
The baby is in a good drinking position with 2 finger-widths between the chin and chest.

Thank you so so much for this series of videos!! My baby is 5 weeks old and we had major issues with breast feeding (I also used domperidon and oxytocin spray). I watched all your videos series last night and you saved my breast feeding!! I know understand why he was choking some times or not comfortable as my nipple is pretty big so if it was not placed to the roof of his mouth to make a vacuum it would hurt him!! Last night was a blessing as all the feedings were great without using the medications and he is happy after the feedings and he gave me even a smile during one feeding!! Thank you again from a super happy mama, I have been on the edge couple of times to quit breastfeeding but so happy I didn’t!!

One idea is to try the side lying position. Some babies do better with coordination in that position...

Any advice for a baby that does not want to open wide?
@faroutfari
@faroutfari 4 года назад
I dont know why but latching in side lie is harder as baby doesnt open the mouth that wide (it's the chin that doesnt come down enough), whereas in rugby baby opens wide. I used my hand a couple of times to pull the chin lower, but other than that, even with starting a little upright on my arm, as you demonstrate in the video, the latch is harder here and has at times been really hard to get right and stressful. I notice there are no videos out there discussing latching in detail for side lie, they all simply demonstrate how to side lie.

Stephn, it's not necessary past a couple of months of age. If baby is breastfeeding well, not causing pain, gaining weight well, then let them nurse in whatever position they want!

how do you correct a shallow or lazy latch?
@nyakanyasko
@nyakanyasko 8 лет назад
+Arshia Varlet If improving positioning doesn't help your baby get a deeper latch I would suggest finding an experienced IBCLC who can work with you to figure out what is going on. I'm not sure what you mean by lazy latch, but if your baby isn't latching well and improving positioning doesn't help, then having someone watch you breastfeed and assess your baby's mouth would be the next step.

Do you think muscle memory is set by 2 months, so the baby can’t get a deeper or better latch at this late?
@nyakanyasko
@nyakanyasko 5 лет назад
No, I don't think it's set, but if your baby isn't getting a deep latch at this point I suspect there's a physical reason. Likely a forward gag reflect... Could be tongue tie, could be reflux, could be other reasons. It would be worth finding an IBCLC to help you figure out what's going on. I hope you will be able to get a better latch! One idea is to try taking a bath with baby and be skin to skin in the warm water together. You need another adult to help you with this because wet babies are slippery! Anyways, skin to skin laid back breastfeeding in a bath will often help a baby to go on instinct and get a better latch. Hope that helps!

Would you make a video about inverted nipples and breast feeding? I'm pregnant and quite worried about how I'm going to breastfeed successfully since I have inverted nipples.

Hi Olivia, I would suggest meeting with an IBCLC before your baby is born to discuss your individual situation and make a plan that will work for you. You can also check out this study about supple cups that might be something you would like to discuss with your lactation consultant, midwife or doctor: www.clinicallactation.org/content/use-supple-cups-flat-retracting-and-inverted-nipples I hope that helps!

Thank you so much! I will definitely read that! I saw that you do google hangouts for consulting is that something you'd be willing to do with me to talk about my situation? Thanks :)

Olivia Hillard Hi Olivia, if there is someone local to you, I think in-person consults are normally most effective. If there's not anyone near you I would be happy to do an online consultation. Send me a message and we can set something up :)
