I am almost 65 and wiser. Saying NO now is just as easy as saying YES. It took me sometime to get this new mindset down. Life is short. I just realized that my life is more important now than it ever was. I spend time for me. On purpose. And I love myself for it!

I was glad to read a comment saying "you are not alone". I am feeling very alone in dealing with everything lately and it felt good to see someone else affirming that we are not really alone, and things may soon get better.

Hello Deb...this is a hard time. Being alone magnifies the worry and difficulties... I feel it’s overwhelming at times, so the idea of self care, and finding things that are a ‘happy place ‘ for me , definitely help lift those dark clouds. I hope you find your own happier places, and a sense of peace and comfort. Best Wishes 🌷

I used to say "No, it's mentally impossible for me." due to stress and anxiety that left me mentally tired. Then at 30, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis so I started saying "No, it's physically impossible for me." instead (as in : I'm too tired to do it). To my own horror, I noticed a TON of compassion that I cannot do something because I'm physically tired, but never received ¼ of that same compassion when I was mentally tired. This says a lot about how mental health is still not acknowledged and valued as much as physical health.

It's Weird! I know a lot of people are struggling with the pandemic effects... especially feeling anxious and lonely. I on the other learned from the isolation, that I am actually really introverted and need time alone to recharge 🤔😍 so in the midst of all the chaos of the pandemic, I actually grew as a person! I wonder if anyone else have experienced this? 😍❤
@suszc
@suszc 3 года назад
Hi Tina, Yes, I feel the same way. I learned that much of my extroverted, go, go, go busy-ness was to try to keep my anxiety and run on thoughts at bay. Now that I was forced to slow down and actually sit with myself I have gotten more motivated to find tools to deal with rather than push all of that stuff away. Huge growth! But I am still very much a work in progress and anxiety can be intense.
@SusanLH

I've learnt exactly the same thing too. I knew I was an introvert and had to hibernate over the weekend to shed the stress of being surrounded by people all week. I too felt anxious and lonely for the first six months but once I made the adjustment I love it and have asked work to only go in two days a week. I am so much happier, relaxed and energetic. What's more I now spend more time with the people I love, family and friends, because I'm not so drained by being around people on public transport and at work. This is what I've been missing all my life.

Yes! Me too! I’ve loved being home. I’m lucky that I’ve been able to work from home, but I’m less work stressed, I eat healthier, I sleep better, and I’m way more productive. I’m not looking forward to getting back to the office. I know things can’t go back to my pre-COVID habits, so navigating that is going to be interesting.

the main thing with the problem of saying no is that we have to integrate the idea that most of us are people-pleasers and that's something that it's hard to face about ourselves, unfortunately there's not a magic wand for it other than to practice by really feeling what is going on inside ourselves and than conscisously accepting to chose that by saying no we are freeing ourselves (every time a bit more) from past issues of co-dependance. Lovely video as always :)

When I'd like to say 'no' to an invitation or request, I try to focus on what I am saying YES to . To more rest, more self time, study time, practicing art, relaxing time or quality time with a partner, friend, family member, or reading or whatever. So instead of putting the focus on saying 'no' or the idea that I am 'disappointing someone' I focus on the YES to whatever I need or whatever I like to spend my precious energy on. It makes me feel less guilty and the words will come without thinking. By being honest and genuine about your state of being, the other person will understand and maybe even be inspired by your natural self-evident self care. So it's not about saying 'no' to something or somebody outside of yourself, but it's about saying 'YES' to something inside yourself. Even if that something is just 'doing nothing'.YES feels much more powerful and joyful in your body and it opens your heart and that you will radiate out towards the other person. 🙂 (Does this make any sense to you?) Thanks for your video Wendy and lots of love to everyone here 🥰

I'm just discovering this too. A friend asked me if I wanted to join a group that was making a fiber piece. In the past I would have thought I have to say yes. Where does that come from?? I politely said it was a wonderful idea and I wish them the best with it. ah...it feels good to know I don't have to say yes to everything and not hurt someone's feelings.

There was a time in my life, in the 1950s , when we knew very little about what was happening world wide . As we had no electricity, if the reception was ok , Dad would listen to the BBC news on the radio run by two car batteries .We got the newspapers every two weeks and a whole Saturday would be taken up finding out retrospectively, what had gone on in the World. Thinking about and worrying about what is happening all over the World right now is too much for anyone's psyche. All in all it is overwhelming and as we can't do anything individually to fix the whole world we can fall into anxiety and helplessness. My remedy is to send metta out in daily chants and look at the prayer flags doing the same. My own little World is the only World I have the immediate power to change. Saying no to others is saying yes to yourself. What we have been taught is that this is selfish but that is an introject, someone else's moralistic idea. There is a big difference between being self responsible (responding to self), and being selfish. I would never think for one second that you are uncaring as selfish acts are. I love your new direction in your art It shows your talent and maturity. It's great you are being discerning and finding ways to develop and refine your creative expression. Lots of love, arohanui ehoa. Xxx

Thank you Wendy. I remember the lovely little fantasy of we two living down the lane from one another. How we would visit and picnic in the summer or read cozily together beside an open fire. Tina yes it does affect our mental health and probably our physical health because stress does this. How can we not be deeply affected by the plight of those families in India right now. Oh, yes! A tree hugger since childhood...I used to tell all my troubles to an old Maple tree. Years later my Mom and I saw my little sis talking to the same "listening" tree. My Mom just sighed and said, "Yes, she does it too." Just before marrying way back in 1969, my Mom asked me to stop climbing trees for a bit as I was to merry in a couple of weeks. So, yes. A tree hugger, wood nymph from way back. I love trees! They are kindred spirits and kind and gentle healers of heart and mind.

very special to experience that someone of a different age in another country shares so many recognizable things. I am Dutch for 70 years and have been a widow for 7 years and have since then lived in France in an old farmhouse. i graduated from the academy of the hague in 2005 and did the academy graphic subjects much longer ago in amsterdam. I struggle with many feelings about everything. but above all whether I am good enough. since august i have finally been drawing and painting again and the inspiration comes up again. your experiences are very similar to what I feel. and your way of life also has many similarities. I think that is special to see and experience. i enjoy your videos. Your peony painting is so beautiful,. It’s like you could reach out and touch it. So soft and peaceful. You are so right about how precious our time is. I use to be a real people pleaser, at my own expense. As I have gotten older, I have become braver to say no, when I don’t feel like doing something for someone else. It’s my time and I want to be able to do what I want when I want and not feel guilty. My daughter would ask me to do things, she could do herself, and I say no now. It feels good.

I find saying no really really hard. Often will feel guilty when I have to say no. I beat myself up afterward to. I have to settle with the uncomfortable feelings and tell myself that it will pass. Been a very anxious week. We are in lockdown again and the news just really makes me feel so depressed. Sleeping through the night is a rare occurrence and weird dark dreams. Trying to stay positive - journals and watching wonderful videos...like this one to lift my spirits.

I say “no” by saying “yes”...”No, I can’t manage that right now cuz I’ve said yes to some other things that really bring me joy that I’m enjoying exploring right now.” It really avoids having to ‘splain or make excuses and it’s a positive, upbeat way to say “I’m busy making myself happy and less stressed” which is a good reminder to others to do the same. Love you, love your art, love your candor.

How interesting that 'no' is one of the very first words we all learned to say when we were babies... we all innately knew what we didn't want to do/see/eat/hear back then and had such a strong desire to express it! It's tough to do that as you get older and gain so much more empathy. I don't have too many tips on how best to navigate saying 'no' as a grown up, other than just to be kind and try your best to believe that the other party will meet / is meeting your 'no' with kindness in return!

Then I read a book which changed my life in that regard, because it wasn't only full of good ideas, but practical too, and gave easy and fun exercises to help integrate new ways - 'When I Say No, I Feel Guilty' by Manuel J Smith, it worked a treat, and sitting around our dinner table we used to practice the exercises with our kids. With Spring, oh tree hugger, you have broken out of the gloomy rainy winter, like we have, on the south west coast of Canada. and your only doing what comes naturally going to the Nursery to see nature growing. Hands in the soil, caring for plant and trying to make them the best they can be like yourself. I find when I am melancholy, sad anxious with stuff I haven't been able to get done. Going out into the world gives back inspiration and life itself. And I think filming your artist endeavours and success is rewarding and scary. Your sharing and performing and you give a piece of yourself away to us and we watch. We love you for it. Giving ourselves encouragement, for sure is what one of our needs are about in present day. Your Peony is a peony all feathery and brilliant. Don't forget you have that beautiful mermaid up above reminding you how good you are. Thanks for sharing

I find them so interesting. I heard that even just cleaning your house has the same effect which makes sense really. I wonder if your anxiety was a reaction to you saying no. When saying “NO” actually is better for the person asking, if we say yes when we really don’t want to do it! The doing becomes a burden it can’t go well! The kindness works both ways, for yourself and for them! Maybe if we see our actions from different perspectives we can lose the guilt! I think your morning starting earlier is working for you! As a social worker my clients benefited from re-direction when feeling anxiety and I find for myself, setting up a simple priority of one or two do-able tasks! Your art direction and attitude is a great role-model, and I can see it working! I liked the square ones until I saw the watercolor one, loved your drawing and watching you paint it! Blessed and safe days!

I will, I promise 🤗 I have been reminding myself every night and every morning when I catch myself going to bed and waking up worrying about the next day and everything that's been troubling me. Reminding myself to be grateful for my time in this world. I lost a friend last year who was so lovely and such a bright light in the world. Now I try to think every day that I am so fortunate to be here on the planet one more day. One more day that she is gone. I try to honour her by bringing a fraction of the grace and warmth into the world that she brought into my life. When I have trouble sleeping I 'shhhh' myself and stroke my arm to block out the racing thoughts. Just like how my mum used to soothe me to sleep when I was a little girl woken up by a bad dream. It sounds silly, but it works! Taking a moment to pause the doubts and worries and show the same kindness to ourselves that we show to others 💓

A walk in the woods near where I live is really healing and lifts my mood. The learning to say NO thing is really difficult. I'm just starting to suss it out at 54!. The guilt feeling is awful but if you say it in a kind way it should work out OK. I've learnt that if people give you a hard time about it they are probably not worth knowing. I love your painting that is in progress. Her face and her hand are so expressive, it's the kind of sentiment I like. I'm also new at saying "no." I've been practicing saying it nicely where I defend myself in the best way. What I mean by that is that I try to protect my peace and make it a point that that's why I'm saying no, but at the same time I try to tell the person that they shouldn't take it personally because I have a different priority. I realized that people respect me more for it, especially when I don't look apologetic while I'm saying no, and I'm just very at peace with myself while saying it. This way it prevents them from insisting 😆. But I know that it can be a struggle and glad to hear I'm not the only one struggling...

You are certainly not the only one feeling anxious. We are still going through a lot of stress with all that is going on in the world and how different things are than what we were used to. . I loved your term-- a soft panic-attack. I can relate... and to the guilt when saying no. Saying no is hard! It seems to work best when I can remember to not defend myself or give reasons, just stick with being polite and saying, "Thanks for the offer, that doesn't work for me." You talked about observing yourself feeling or thinking something, and that's a really helpful process-- when I'm able to do it, it gives me a little distance and I'm more often able to have some compassion for myself and question the thought or feeling. Also, I love the watercolor peony and watching you paint the new woman-face, seeing how she is coming to life. I find faces hard! So watching you helps me learn.

I found out recently that 'morning anxiety' is actually a thing. My partner suffers from it too. Saying no is getting easier, probably cos the last year has exhausted a lot of my patience and good will! Lovely video as always, keep hugging trees, I certainly will. X😊🌳

For me an polite excuse and a clear no are the best way to handle those situations without guild. I find that the guild comes in when I give explanations and think about the other person to judge the importance of my justification. What can be very clear and important for me can be no hindrance for someone else. So polite, but no explanations is the way the other person can safe time and find someone else and I don’t have to feel guilty. Thanks for another Vlog, Wendy. I am really enjoying them and watching them more than one time😊 sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed I watch RU-vid videos without the sound. Some RU-vidrs make Vlogs without music and I just hear the paper or brush strokes, I love that. It’s like spending time together without any talking, I find that very calming.

Hugs back to you ... .I have had horrible anxiety attacks more often...heart racing , sweating, shaking ...its terrible . I’m nearly 66 and still can’t say no! If ever I do I feel so guilty and then backtrack. It comes from feeling that other people’s needs are greater than my own. One day perhaps! Love your honest videos and the fact that you are so down to earth. Keep going! I’m sure we can all learn from your ongoing commitment to self care.

Your peony looks beautiful, looks like the one growing in my courtyard. I love how transparency and honesty. Getting up early has it’s benefits but having a lie in once in awhile is ok. I am 73 now and retired too so realized this past week that I have been waking up early too, sometimes way early like you at 4 am. Getting back to sleep is not always easy and sometimes really hard to get to sleep when I go to bed. I love watching you paint, the flowers are lovely and the latest lady is coming along nicely. Hugs and love .😘 Have a beautiful weekend 😘

I too had to say "no" last week for self preservation...and also felt guilty. Don't think I am going to change at my age. Just have to learn to deal with those feelings, it makes me who I am. You are a wonderful soul, who gives so much. Thank you. Also I love to see you and James together. We have been married 36 years and our youngest daughter painted a canvas saying "Happy Anniversary to a couple whose love and devotion to each other continues to freak the hell out of everyone who knows you!" long may it continue ....for you two too!

I’ve really enjoyed watching you paint. The flowers are lovely. I also love the background on the pink one just as it is. It indeed sounds like we are all experiencing anxiety and missed sleep. I have to constantly remind myself to be mindful of my needs which has always seemed selfish, as I too put everyone else’s needs before my own. Very much trying to change that. My favorite time to create is early morning when my mind is fresh. Thanks again for taking us along and sharing your creative week with all of us. 🥰

I totally here you with regards to getting out by a certain time, I'm the same. I found taking my watch off helped so I could be free and not under the pressure of time. Obviously I can't when I am working but again I leave earlier to get in when it's quiet. About the guilt saying no... I used to feel like that... really badly, to the point where I’d say yes (as you say, upbringing). Now, I am left with only slight remnants of that. I do have great difficulties leaving my abode... that’s been ongoing for many years now. The only positive from that is I’m possibly doing better than many in these lockdown periods. My recovery has been very slow. Still is. Some would say excruciatingly so. But, it IS recovery atleast. I’m happier now than I have ever been. I’m actually grateful for the years of deep depression and suicidal tendencies. I know that sounds weird, but I’m through the worst and I’m alive, and even beginning to be creative again, so I must be a very strong woman. Things can only get better. Famous last words 😂 But seriously... I know life will always have its ups and downs, some worse, some better than others, but I’m glad I’m still here and feeling generally positive. Well, that WAS a waffle wasn’t it. And no I’m not going to apologise 😂🤣❤️ Hope you get some good shut-eye soon 🌓

That was such a lovely chat Wendy.🥰 . Weird as lockdown has been it certainly has had a positive effect on my guilt. I’ve stopped feeling guilty about chilling out. I’d actually forgotten about my guilty self until you reminded me 🤭. I retired 3 yrs ago and couldn’t let go of the guilt if I wasn’t doing ‘stuff’ all of the time. And I do struggle with saying no, but that has also stopped being an issue because of self isolation. It will be interesting to see if I slip back into old ways when life gets back to ‘normal’ !! Sending hugs back to you. It always makes me so happy when I see a new video to view from you. Thank you so much 👋🏼X

I love the peony watercolor . Just gorgeous! And the new logo is beautiful! I have had very similar sleep issues this week all the way across the ocean from you in Maine. Strange and unsettling times, for sure. As for the saying no to things issue...I have definitely gotten better at it with age but I still often feel the need to explain myself when perhaps just saying no is enough. I forgot to add something I've been thinking about while watching your video. All the weird feelings you've been having that probably have to do with the lock down, I remember one psychologist saying that artists feel much, much more deeply than other people. I'm sure you know that, we all do, but to me this simple truth helps so much sometimes because I get scared of some feelings I have or I get scared of how long it takes me to get over traumatic experiences or just unsettling experiences. And then I remember that it's because I can feel so deeply, and I dwell on the emotions and I have to thoroughly work them out until I'm really over them. And in time I started seeing this ability to feel deeply as a strength 💪... and now I just let the bad times pass because they always do... Another thing I was thinking about and practicing for a long time is just the idea that I can't always feel good and pleasant, even if I'm doing activities that I really enjoy. I think that most of us are under the illusion that we should always feel good when we do something we love and if we don't feel good, then we are guilty... I don't know if this is related to the above, but thinking this way has helped me get over this constant expectation that I should feel good whenever I want to 😂...

The NO topic...very big in my life! ;) I learned NOT to say as a child (not in a physical harmful way!), because others would feel bad if I did. So I grew up thinking I could only make people happy by doing what they want. I am currently learning to drop that toxic thinking/behavior. It is still hard and I still feel guilty..but it gets better the more often you practice. The example I was given (feeling dried out and exhausted most of the time) was: "you can´t give water to a thirsty person if your waterbottle is empty". That made totally sense to me. I have to come first, so I feel good. When I feel good, I can then decide to help (or not to) someone. So simple but yet so hard...anyway, loved this video and especially the watercoloring! :) Stay happy and healthy ♥

I find transitioning difficult. Moving from sleep to wake, wake to sleep, work to play, play to work.It was helpful when I identified that. What I'm doing to help myself with things, and to get to work easier in the morning--while working with that problem with transitioning, takes place the day before. Before end for the day, I tidy my space. I gesso some paper and stretch it, get it completely ready for my morning art exercises (right now it's fruit and veggies). I take a look at what I'm going to work on. Today it's eggplants. I look at a lot of images and maybe do some sketches. Then when I sleep, it's percolating. My morning is much like yours, with the yoga, then when I walk to my work table, I don't have to do anything but sit down and paint. Once I start it's easy to keep going, wind down with the next day prep, repeat.
