Riva Tuner Statistics Server (RTSS) has a frame limiter which surprisingly will optimize how your GPU renders frames when your monitor only supports a set refresh rate. www.guru3d.com/files-details/r... Check out PrecisionX for EVGA.
Things move fast, and this video is getting older by the day. But I STILL use RTSS to limit frames in some games. But I've learned, that if you have FreeSync you should try and avoid using any frame limiter including FRTC if you want the best overall experience. If possible, V-Sync or Adaptive V-Sync are your friend and you should use them. So be selective for the most part, but RTSS still does a great job.
A life saving video - thanks! It save me a lot wasted heat, power and fan noise in Hearts of Iron 4 - I can't believe their isn't more info on this subject.
@urbanelemental: To be honest i was skeptic even after watching your entire video, but it works. Actually it works and the games now work so much better.
I got the feeling that when I have RTSS open, then I have less delay even though I have the same latency as normally. Am I imagining things? Am I overly optimistic to ask anything on youtube comment section?
this program can be a godsend for people that have problems with some games that are cpu intensive, my 2500k struggles on games like witcher 3 and rise of the tomb raider, limiting certain games to say 45 - 55 fps on riva tuner means your processor doesn't have to work as hard
yeh its certain cpu heavy titles that struggle with my 2500k, usually open world games, riva tuner helps with frame pacing alot. the new hitman is another game that runs so much better for me with riva tuner, even setting it to 55fps make's the game alot more stable, with rise of the tomb raider i have to set it to 45 fps because it is a really cpu heavy title, without riva tuner it stutters like a bitch I dont mind having the fps a little bit lower than 60fps as long as i can have all the settings turned right up
One of my first game related videos, but RTSS still works today but maybe not a great benefit for every game as many games have figured out that frame limiting is a good thing.
Well, from skeptic (because i used to have MSI Afterburner and riva cause screen tearing and weird colour issues) to now agreeing 100% because dark souls runs better now(MSI Afterburner was the culprit). This was a very helpful video post. Thanks bruh. More videos like this so i can eek out a better experience from my old laptop would be gold, haha.
Yeah it's been a while since I've gamed, but I'm that type that it's gotta be 'right' (perfect) or I can't sleep at night. Things have changed, but RTSS is still a good tool. Not all games need it, but many benefit from it.
A Quick Note about Witcher 3: It's optimized for 60fps, and if you are like me an have a 75Hz FreeSync monitor, you may find that the frames become strangely unstable (stuttering) above 60. On top of frame limiting, switch the monitor to 60Hz when playing W3 and you'll see everything smooth out. Check out a tool called "QRes" in order to make shortcuts for switching Hz.
i have a question... enabling RT framerate limiter and having a frame rate limiter in game... do they conflict with each other? should you run only one? which one? what if there is no OFF feature for the framerate limiter in the game except setting the limit higher? will that negate the RT limit?
In my experience the in game frame limiter does not conflict (with say the global setting) but after many experiments and tests, I find that it's better to turn off any frame limiters except for RTSS. There's a really lengthy discussion on Reddit that talks about how some frame limiting is bad when it comes to FreeSync or GSync. In general, if you have a FreeSync or GSync monitor, you can reduce the input lag to a minimum by using FRTC (for example). It basically clocks down the GPU to prevent frames from exceeding the limit and therefore no tearing occurs but also no buffer is present. But, you can also do the same thing by setting RTSS to a lower value like 70fps if you have a 75Htz monitor. But thats where I facepalm and say.. So I have to have less FPS in order to get better latency? :| I want the smoothest game experience and from those who seem to know what they are saying, it may simply be better to only have the game set to VSYNC ON and have no frame limiting because VSYNC does exactly that. That is of course if the game properly supports VSYNC or Adaptive VSYNC or whatever. I find that for the most part, because I have 2 GPUs, RTSS is ESSENTIAL to stabilize the frame times and frame rates.
For W3 I turn off the in game limiter and rely solely on RTSS set to 60. But that is because I have multiple GPUs. If you have a lower resolution setting or a GPU can handle higher FPS, you could probably go higher than 60 with stable frames. In practice, I can't consistently reach 60ps with Ultra settings on a 1440p ultrawide when only on 1 GPU. So I guess the real answer to your question is don't use the in game limiter for W3. And watch out for other games who implement limiter levels lower than what your monitor can handle. DOOM is an interesting one because Vulkan mode is so much faster but they don't have a frame limiter for it. :( An in-game frame limit would be very useful.
omg this helped me so much like before this in Rise of the tomb rider i got like 15-55 fps and with this did fps cap to 30 and now its steedy 30 fps all times it better to have 30 fps and not 15... now i can play all new games as if im playing it at console cause consoles use 30 fps caps to..
Also in case of crappy gtx 750 vga schematics it makes image more crisp and colorful if game can run much higher than 60 fps, and while using 60hz display. I.e. lego games series. It wasn't the case with gtx 460 (but it had heat-fragile soldering with such big gpu)
Also limit to exactly 60fps not always provides best expirience. You should test 55-65 range to figure what works best for you. For me it's 57.0 fps in lego marvel's avengers. For test, pick bright location with thin dark vertical lines and run/move camera sideways. There should be tearing and/or stuttering - they always present.
Hello, i have a problem in which i limit the frame limit to 60 because my refresh rate is 60hz but i still get crazy screen tearing. Has this happened to you?
+andree1991 this might be late but your monitor isn't exactly 60hz even if it's 59.xx you'll get tearing if you get 60 fps so turn on Vsync too and you should be good.
I've noticed a lot of game like Dishonoured and a bunch of others dont use Vsync properly, and the fps jumps around from 59.4-61fps causing the vsync to be unsmooth, RTSS is a godsend.
I tried to look at people’s comments to find out if they know about frametimes. But unfortunately, no. Frametimes determine whether you’ll have a smooth gameplay or not. You can have a game at 90-100 fps, but if the frametimes are incosistent, you’ll have a stutterfest going on. Using RTSS to stabilize FPS & frametimes to around 70-75 will yield to smoother gameplay just because your frametimes are more consistent. Having a G-Sync/Freesync monitor does alleviate this issue. But if you have SLI/CFX, your frametimes will vary and it’ll be inconsistent once again as that’s just the nature of multi-GPU.
if you turn v sync on the game tearing will go, riva tuner still works with vsync on, certain games it is actually better to have vsync and rivatuner on at the same time
