Improving Your Neutral in SSBU: Decision Making

You Suck at Neutral

In Super Smash Bros Ultimate, consistency is a defining trait of a good player. If you can beat a large majority of people and experience a very small amount of losses, then odds are you are very good.
However, achieving that state is something that's very hard, we may be able to win once, but what about multiple times?
We at YSAN will unpack one piece of that puzzle.

I always relied on reads for my playstyle, and I feel it worked a lot better in Brawl and Smash 4. Punishing and reacting to things like rolls, spotdodge and airdodges was a lot easier, and I could do it consistently. Ultimate makes it a lot harder to punish or react to these, which is why I feel people can get away with a lot more.

A big lesson I've been learning lately is that it's so much more consistent to go for reaction based punishes than reads

I am just going to start sticking videos like this in to a playlist so that I can have a little place to watch all these videos. But, these videos are developed pretty well and I enjoy them for the higher production and knowledge I get from it.

I bought the game yesterday, i've played over 100 online matches and the amount i've won can be counted on one hand. Makes me regret the purchase, but me sucking isnt the games fault. Thanks for the tips.

good advice, but it’s unclear from the video what the difference is between reads and decisions. you make decisions based on risk/reward and what you think your opponent will do, but can also decide to try to read your opponent based on similar risk/reward? sounds the same to me
@yousuckatneutral8017
@yousuckatneutral8017 2 года назад
While technically these are both "reads", it would be better to rephrase reads more as high risk options and decisions more as low risk options. While both actions have to be educated, one is more of a gamble than the other. Hope this helped! - Brian Ding

I feel like the concept of a conscious decision in Smash is uncommon and unlikely. This video sounds more like it is talking about reads than decisions. You are still relying on the opponent to play into your hands considering the limited context given. These decisions are the same thing as reads.
@yousuckatneutral8017
@yousuckatneutral8017 3 года назад
Right, decisions and reads require you to take your opponents information into account, since playing independently of your opponent is a pretty bad idea. If you want to define a read as "using your opponents information to make a choice," then you would also be correct in saying that decisions are the same as reads. The big defining factor is both the risk you are taking, and the chance of success that your action has. Hope this cleared things up! - Brian Ding

You're using the term "read" when what you really mean is "guess." And yes, a "read" is a sort of guess--but it's not completely random. Players who are better at the psychological aspect of smash have a MUCH higher percentage of success making reads than if they were pure luck. This is because these players are "in the head" of the other player, and intuitively recognize (or "read") what the other player wants to do. In fact, some players' style is fundamentally based off of reads. Skyjay is a great example of this. Mkleo is also very good at reading his opponents. An example of a player who is NOT good at making reads is Tweek. He has absolutely amazing technical skills and his movement is as smooth as butter. But his reads SUCK. In fact, he's so bad at making reads that his success % on them is WORSE than if he flipped a coin. If you have the ability to figure out your opponent and capitalize on your intuitions, you definitely should, and many times players have won games (and entire tournaments) because they went for a read at the right moment instead of playing it safe with the risk/reward.

i think maybe you shouldnt corner yourself in ssbu. Its smash fundies. Sure your matchup videos definately should be mainly about ult but everything in this video also applies to Melee and other platform fighters. Actually this video applies to all fighting games but you get the idea.
