Improvised Abstract Painting - 12"x12" #arttutorial #bebrave #intuitiveart #wingit #abstractart

This video details my creative process as I make a painting without a plan. The whole thing is completely improvised and intuitive and made up on the spot. Since I usually work in a series of several paintings at a time, this was really fun because I was able to focus all of my attention on just one painting for a change. I like to sit on these for a bit before I decide if they're 100% finished or not, but this one might be complete as is. I can't articulate it, but there's something about it that I really like.
What do you think? Are you glad it's just paint? Do you wish I had used collage? Tell me in the comments!

I’m an artist/Art Therapist and I am so intuitive and spontaneous with my creative process I never have a clue what I’m doing - usually 60-75% into a piece, if not more. I love watching other artists work and it’s comforting to realize that experimenting, doing, undoing, is just part of a highly creative process. All those decisions and possibilities in one piece! Several times I watched and thought, “no… I like that! Don’t cover it up.” And then the piece begins to go another direction and becomes even more interesting. And I do the exact same thing in my own work. It’s easy to regret covering some parts up but I have to just keep going until things feel resolved. Creativity is not “efficient” and the shortest path to an end, but that’s the nature of it, I think. Love this!

Well said! It’s so much fun to discover as you create, isn’t it? Covering things up can be tricky (I seem to get attached to everything 😆), but learning to trust myself - that if I regret a move, I’ll be able to make something else that I like just as much - has grown from practice. So nice to hear from someone who works in a similar way! Cheers to enjoying the process! ❤️❤️❤️

Yes! And like you, I like to paint multiples when possible just so I don’t get too carried away on one piece. I also like to take photos at various points in case I want to recreate a portion in another piece. :)

I always leave your videos with a renewed sense of creativity, Jackie! I gain many more insights on creativity from your explorations with paint than I got at traditional 'art school'! As I watched today, I wondered whether you use paintshapers for specific effects, but you then addressed that topic and paint brushes...it's like you read my mind!! I love that you will paint over colors completely that you chose only moments earlier. I am learning from you that the creative journey is just as important, if not more important, than the finished art. This is a great 🎁 gift for any artist to know!

Your bright red is gorgeous, and even when you paint over it you feel it's there. I love your celadon as well. I can't get it here (The Netherlands) without extreme shippingcosts, so I mix a kind of pale celadon myself and keep it in a bottle. Love the piece, love the video...thanks Jackie!

Jackie, do you find that the Liquitex Clear Gesso has a grit to it once you apply it to the wooden panel? I've used Liquitex clear gesso to prime watercolor paper for pastel work, as the tooth of the gesso is perfect for soft pastels. Watching you paint, your panel does not appear to be gritty. I wonder if there are other manufacturers of Gesso who offer a clear gesso that is smooth like the white? If you have an answer to that question, let me know please! I love your work and your narration even more so! You are such a down to earth, funny, and very talented person!!
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 8 месяцев назад
Oh thanks so much, Deanna - I appreciate you watching! ❤️ I do find the gesso to be gritty. I will say that I put it on and basically squeegee it off with my color shaper, so it’s a thin layer. Perhaps my method smoothes out the grit enough for the paint to glide a bit more? I’m not exactly sure because I so rarely use gesso 😆

Utterly unique and I can see how the process is different working on one piece instead of multiples -- I tend toward wanting to bypass time to actually consider what I'm doing but I can see that there's probably a rhythm to each that could inform the other -- always come away with new information from watching you Jackie ❤

You're so right - each way of working definitely has its own rhythm. I like them both for different reasons. Of course right now, I'm wishing I had made several of these so I could see how they all were alike and different. However, if I HAD made several of them, this one may not have turned out like this, so it's always a mystery. I always feel encouraged by your comments - thanks so much for your thoughtful input as always! ❤️❤️❤️

Hey… love your work! Obsessed with your videos! You’ve inspired me to start making mixed media collage paintings! PLEASE make a video showing the paints you use… maybe a simple shot of the labels … and maybe showing a brush stroke or 2 of each paint. You use some that seem very gel like?!? Very translucent! I’ve heard you say Fluid paint and high flow paint… have looked them up but am overwhelmed and still unsure! Please make a Paint Training Wheels video for people like me! Thank You🖤🤍🖼️🎨🖌️

When you painted the little strip of red at the top with white, I was so bummed…..but it never fails you make it so interesting and awesome just by adding the little black lines. Hi Jackie, Thank you for your Wonderfull videos. They are both - enjoying and very teachable... In some of them you are using a sketch book, what kind is it? what kind of paper? I'd like to order some and seems that what you use can hold paint and the collages quite well. Thank you for a respond and all the best Sara👃

I purchased 20 or so of the 12" X 12" cradled panels at Dollar Tree for $3.00 each, such a deal, but I have yet to paint anything on them. You've inspired me to at least give it a try! I'll use GAC 100 to seal back and front, and gesso on the front. Hopefully they will have a modicum of quality! I watched a RU-vid video of Joan Fullerton working on a cradled wood panel and she prefers to work on the raw wood, no sealing or priming whatsoever. I'm curious how that would hold up?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 8 месяцев назад
As long as you seal the whole thing with varnish or gloss/matte medium,starting on the bare board doesn’t impact the archival nature as far as I have seen. Some people don’t like the way the paint soaks into the wood and prefer it to remain on top of it (as it does when gesso is used). I typically buy pre-gessoed boards or seal it with gloss medium first. ❤️
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 8 месяцев назад
So awesome to find the cheap panels!! As long as you seal them I imagine they will work just fine 🤗
@AR-gh1pc
@AR-gh1pc 8 месяцев назад
As long as it’s actual wood and not particle board, there really shouldn’t be any issue with quality. I prefer working on wood, just because I like the resistance when I’m painting on a rigid surface. Sometimes I gesso first, but often I don’t if I want to use the quality of the wood surface to peek through areas. I’m talking about acrylic though. The only time gesso is a must is if you’re working in oils, or some kind of ground to prep for a “shiny” surface that won’t take paint well, or wood with a stain that might have tannins bleed through, for example. With a small cradled wood panel you should be fine. (The exception: Paper always needs to be encased front and back to be archival due to acid in the paper.) This is how I was taught but I’m curious now.. lol. I will probably research further.

how can i make a transparent paint out of a regular body paint?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 22 дня назад
Are you wanting to thin your paint down from heavy body paint to fluid paint (thinner but not lighter in color)? If so, you can try adding mediums (high flow, fluid medium, etc.) to the thicker paint and mixing it to thin it out. If you’re looking to make opaque paint (can’t see through it) transparent, you can make it a bit more see-through by adding mediums, but it will still look a bit “chalky” and not as transparent as just starting with transparent paint.
@cynthiathomas262
@cynthiathomas262 21 день назад
@@jackieschomburgart i don't want to thin the body of the paint so much as have a transparent paint without buying another tube of paint. ie, i have a tube of magenta paint that's opaque; i want to have this same color but transparent.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 21 день назад
Got it. Then I’d suggest adding medium to it to make it less opaque. 👍
