Happy New Year Jonathan. Is the sound of a cheap Electric Cello different than NS Design after IR applied ? Have you seen one cheaper than NS/yamaha in Oz that is not too awful to play ?Thank you

@@CelloCoach Finally got my Mooer and IRs. Have yet to invest in a speaker that you recommended but my NXTa still doesn't seem to sound like a French cello :) Can you share which file you used from 3SA (since there are quite a few), along with the settings used? Thanks!
@Kwert

The 3 Sigma stuff is pretty good. Not phenomenal, but there isn't yet a ton out there as far as cello IRs go. For what you pay you get a lot to choose from and there are a few in there that sound quite nice, especially if you do a bit more tone-shaping with the EQ on the Stomp and possibly another EQ pedal somewhere in your signal chain.

NS Design CR series IR - thepickuptest.com/product-category/electric-cello-library/

Just got a response from Jacob at The Pickup Test. The cello library they sell was created with and specifically for the ToneDexter pedal. He doesn't think it would work with any other IR loader pedals or with your DAW. Just a heads up for anyone who might be looking into those that doesn't own the ToneDexter.

Thank you very much for your videos @Jonathan Humphries ! I had a question as to the IRs you are using. I purchased the 3 Sigma Audio IRs but in each of the folders there appears to be subfolders that match recording sample rates for your DAW. If you were to use these impulse responses straight to a speaker instead of the DAW, which sample rate would you use? I know just enough about home recording to be dangerous LOL! I'm currently waiting for my NXTa4 to arrive and my planned setup is the Cello -> Darkglass Element (Headphone amp/IR loader) -> Headrush 112 FRFR (Full Range/Flat Response) cab. I'm hoping this will give me a nice natural cello sound through the speaker as well as through the headphone amp when I need to practice later at night :) Thanks again for all your videos.. I find them incredibly informative and useful!
@WARL0CK

Got a response back from the 3 Sigma Audio gang. Never stopped to think that the sample rate would be device specific. Looks like the Darkglass Element runs @48KHz sample rate. The Mooer Radar you demonstrated runs @44.1KHz sample rate according to the manual. So I would use wav files from the 48 subfolder and Mooer Radar users would use wav files from the 44.1 subfolder. Hope this update helps someone else trying to figure this stuff out :) Cheers!

Brilliant work, Starhawk. I need to find out which sample rate I am usine for my HX Stomp and Mooer Radar. Good looking out!
@WARL0CK
@WARL0CK 2 года назад
@@CelloCoach Took a quick peek at the HX Stomp manual. Looks like it takes whatever IR you upload and runs a conversion on it to make it 48KHz. So if you aren't using the 48 folder files, I'd give those a try and see if you notice a difference. They should be closer to the source material since they don't need to be converted. :)

Which IR file from the 3 Sigma set do you think sounds the best on the CR5? They provide so many.
@CelloCoach
@CelloCoach 2 года назад
For my taste, the flat response is best, and to my knowledge only the French Cello is available.

@@CelloCoach The flat response are the "a" files. Do you use the acoustic, v1, v2, or v3 folder? Which file do you prefer inside the folder (1a-5a)?
@WARL0CK
@WARL0CK 2 года назад
@@blakekiefer4155 Hi Blake! So I just got my NXTa this week and spent a good chunk of the day running through all of them by loading 5 at a time and picking the "best" one and then comparing the winners. I agree with Jonathan that the flat response ones sounded the best. To my ear, I also leaned toward number 3 of the 5 versions of each set. I'm assuming from reading the PDF that came with them that 1-5 must be the different mic combinations they used. And of the #3s, I preferred the V3 one out of the others. So I loaded V3 3a as my number one choice. I tried the acoustic ones but they didn't sound right with my setup. I might have been able to mess with the EQ to make it better but haven't had a chance yet. My signal chain was the NXTa going straight into a Darkglass Element Headphone Amp and running the output of that into my headphones. I really wanted to try the whole setup through my FRFR cab but it arrived dead so I'm waiting for the replacement to get here. I'll give an update once I get a working one. In theory, it should sound pretty good as those cabs are designed specifically for modeling amps which use IRs for simulating different guitar cabs. It has a frequency range of 46Hz-22kHz so it wouldn't quite cut it for a 5 string but should be just fine for the 4. I should also note that since the Element is a headphone preamp, I ran the NXTa in Passive mode. Active had just a bit too much gain on it. Tomorrow I'm going to try running it through my LR Baggs Venue DI as a preamp and see how that sounds! Hope this helps :)

Thank you for this lucid, detailed and helpful video. I've watched many of your videos. THey are all wonderful Can you help me please? I'm looking for a small IR petal for electric cello that allows me to mix the raw and IR, some EQ and reverb. Basically, just trying to get a decent acoustic sound playing into my headphones. No amping. I learned from another video that not all IR's process the lower tones of the cello well. So I'm a bit worried about that. Thank you again. And keep those fantastic videos coming!

I am a disabled Veteran and I am not a musician, just a dabbler, But I am thinking of getting decent electric cello to learn on to ease my PTSD issues. I have an old line6 POD HD-500 and was wondering if it would work in place of the HX Stomp? I tend to buy better things then if I see it is not for me I find a young person learning the specific instrument and give it to them as they otherwise would not afford it. … then spend the next 2-3 years paying of the credit card lol. Trying to decide between the Yamaha or NS electric Cello to try to learn on.

Mooer tone capture pedal might work better alone or in conjunction with the ir response pedal you're using, because to me your electric cello sound with the ir pedal sounds dull or lacking in some upper mid frequencies. The way Mooer tone capture pedal works, is you play your acoustic and electric into it and it applies the frequency response of your acoustic to your electric. I use it with electric guitars to mimic the sound of my other electric guitars and it works. I didn't try it with an electric cello though, because I don't have one.
