Hi Jonathan, I liked the video! I've wanted an electric cello for a while but have been disappointed by their sound. Thanks for introducing me to impulse response and what they can do fix the dry rubbery piezo sound. Considering the cost of electric cellos it would be cool if they had some sort of impulse response modeling built in.
@djierardi
@djierardi 3 года назад
Built-in generally means unmodifiable, or modifiable only within pre-specified parameters. Having lots of knobs to twist is certainly a complication, but I think Jonathan has demonstrated that having those options is useful. And this is only in trying to reproduce an "acoustic cello" sound. But there's so much more that you can do with an electric cello.

I'm curious are you using a 10 megaohm DI box or a 10 megaohm input amp? I recently purchased a NXTA4 and a DI box did make a big difference. The most dramatic difference was using the Low Pass Filter and Highpass filter with the DI box which made the cello sound more natural. Also, I paired the cello with the inexpensive Positive Spark Amp 40 which sounds amazing with the cello.

Thanks so much for this video! I recently bought a Yamaha and love it overall, but missing a bit of the warmth when I record direct input. Ordering the MOOER pedal as it added so much to the sound! Do you use one of the existing IRs on the pedal, or a custom one? Any suggestions you'd recommend to set it up for that rich acoustic sound?

Where can I get a little bow like you have? I just got an NS, 5 String electric cello. It's sound is outstanding...the tone is so great!
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton 2 года назад
Do you find the extra, 5th string on the NS tips the scales towards it over the Yamaha (or any other electric cello)? I play 5 string bass (both electric bass and electric upright bass), and like the extra range it provides. Cello is pitched in 5ths instead of 4ths, so has a wider range than bass to begin with. Does this compensate enough to stick with 4 strings? Do you find the 5th string interferes with technique? Note: I'm primarily a tenor saxophonist and pianist. Thanks, Jeff.
@CelloCoach
@CelloCoach 2 года назад
Great question, Jeff. The team at NS have optimally spaced the strings of the 5 string to make it easy to transition from a 4 to 5 string. And the range point is exactly why I chose the Low F model. If you watch my latest video featuring Squidgame outfits, I am playing with a 1/2lower F string, which is essentially a contrebass.
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton 2 года назад
@@CelloCoach I watched it! The NS definitely holds its own versus the acoustics! So you have F-C-G-D-A on that video? Sounds like the low, 5th string is useful. On 5 string bass, many complain that it isn't worth it as it is so low.
@geofharris5546
@geofharris5546 2 года назад
@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton I've been playing 5 string (B to G) bass guitar for over 30 years and my comment here is that all the fuss is being made over the ultra-low notes, whereas to me the greatest advantage is the fact you can play more across the neck vs the up'n down travel needed on a 4.. Kind of like thinking of it as two 4str necks superimposed on one another, the second one occupying the B string but starting on the 5th fret. Of course, the B also offers the lower octaves for Eb down to B, but that is mainly an occasional bonus. Having said that, of the two necks concept, I'm totally unconscious of it when playing.. it becomes all one big area. The other very significant thing a 5str delivers is that you have the option of 3 places for some notes all at the same pitch, but with very different tonal responses.. which means you can have the identical riff played in 3 positions with 3 different emphases. Priceless. :)

Cello isn't my instrument. With that said, the piezo alone on the Yamaha sounds not only the most real, but also has a more raw, biting, and upper mid-y sound than all the rest. That slightly harsher sound can be mellowed/tweaked while mixing. Whereas all the others are already a bit dull to begin with, and you can't add those aspects later. If I had to record an electric cello, I'd go with the Yamaha's piezo.

Could you do a video on changing electric cello strings? I got a Yamaha SVC210 about a year ago, and JUST found out that “factory strings” are practically disposable. I’m hoping changing them will increase the sound quality and playability, because in my band when I play on A string it’s just brash and awful -BUT I’ve never changed strings (acoustic or electric) before and I don’t know how. Can I just follow an acoustic tutorial?

I've been playing cello many years competitively in a classical setting. I still think (just hearing from this recording) that the Yamaha has a richer tone than the CR (e.g. comparing @11:03 with @17:57). However, I understand this is just from the recorded audio itself that we're hearing and this is purely my opinion. Maybe it sounds different in person... extremely hard to compare these though because these instruments aren't as readily available to try in the US :(

I think the Yamaha sounds more like an acoustic cello. It has a sound chamber with a spruce top and maple back and sides. The NS has a solid body. Maybe impulse system can save the NS.? I know you compare the preamps and the yamaha distorts some at full volume ... do you normally play electric cello with a preamp at full volume?
