And what a fabulous race in '82. My mother's only Indy 500... totally indifferent to all sports but convinced to go "just once" by my Indianapolis based mother-in-law. So at age 58, there she was as Rick Mears was gaining a second lap in the final ten laps and closing in on Johncock. My mother, standing on her seat in the Tower Terrace screaming, "Go Rick Mears! Go Rick Mears!" In my mind, the best finish ever, though no longer the closest. Everyone has their own Indy 500 story. That will always be my favorite.
