IMTS 2018, the International Manufacturing Technology Show, is a biannual manufacturing show in Chicago, IL, USA. Nearly 130,000 attendees and 32 acres of exhibits. Dad and I had three days in Chicago, attended the show half of that, and could easily have filled twice that time. Thank you to Misumi for the tickets.

Hi Turgay, it's wonderful to hear from you! Hope all is well. Indeed, we went for the show and wanted to leave with great memories. There's never enough time. We completely missed the 3D printing area of the show and would have loved to have seen more of the Asian art, botanical area of the Field Museum, and any of the Museum of Science and Industry. Hope to return. Downtown Chicago is a relaxing seven hour trip on the train. Thank you for the writing.

Love those small delta robots, so awesome!

They are all so fast. Imagine how much energy needs to be dissipated with the fast moving heavy robots. Then the motion planning. It's all very cool. Have you seen Chris Annin's open source robot arm? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EAcU4k2Qskk.html

Sound like you and your Dad had a blast. I was amazed at the sheer number of robot arms and robot machining cells on display. And not to mention the really large CNC machines that they had actually brought in to the show floor.

We had a blast! How many days were you there? We were at the show 1.5 and that's not enough, at least not at the pace we move :) It was cool to see a small prototyping company I'd got to know years ago, Sisu, was there marketing robots as well. Robots and AI - Skynet is coming.

I know! Those robots are fast. I saw a cell where a Fanuc robot was opening the doors of a small lathe, taking parts out and putting stock back in. The rep said it would add about 75k. That could make a lights out operation very cost effective. We were there only one day, and definitely not enough. We live driving distance, so it was easy to get there, but parking was difficult. The main lot A was full at 9:30 am.

I'm considering a robotic arm for plant husbandry operations... But with lights always on :)

Thanks Gavin, I'll always regret not getting a picture together. Maybe in two years.. or maybe I'll come to New Zealand :)

Check out my most recent video: goo.gl/Jj7cU1 This trip was my third time to IMTS and each has been special for different reasons. This was the first one with my Dad. Compared to the last show, the exhibits seemed smaller, but the vendors said they were surprised with the best opening Monday ever and that manufacturing in the US was up. It was great to see the large number of students attending. The nice Airbnb we stayed at was 1/5 of staying downtown, and we discovered an amazing nearby conservatory. Public transportation and Lift made traveling easy. Travel to Chicago was by Amtrak and home by United. If you are near, and interested in manufacturing, treat yourself and attend in 2020.

Even though I only been at my manufacturing job for six months I'm going to try to get them to send me there haha 🙃🙃😂

Go for it, it's a year away, and IMTS is great education! Admission is $50 for the week and some big vendors give away tickets. The hotels are insanely expensive, but Airbnb and the train or Uber solves that. If you are into it all, probably will need three days minimum at the show.

@@kentvandervelden Will try! My job manufactures aircraft parts and my training ends in about a year. I'm hoping to be a full engineer or get into CNC programming or quality control. I look forward to seeing where my job takes me!
