I am impressed by how similar the movie is to the books. It makes me SO happy they didn’t butcher the story and kept many amazing and important details from the original text.
@@DeepDarkBoys No he's not a deeper character, and he is not that important for the story. He dies in the first third of book one never to be mentioned again.
That's because bullets and high-end tech guns like plasma/laser can't penetrate the body shield they are wearing. Who has thought that old school weapons are the most efficient ones in the end?
As someone who loves this book and really enjoyed this movie, you are explaining it amazingly. It’s what the movie should’ve done a little bit better with but still a work of art.
Thank you Kristina for the compliment! I loved the book and the movie both as well, so it means a lot that another real fan approves of our storytelling.
I don't think the movies do justice to the books at all, it literally changes an incredible amount of little details, details that in the book make everything have cohesion. Sometimes I trully hate Hollywood. They did the same with TLoTR.
I watched the movie and was thinking WTF is this. It was so watered down I might as well been watching Dancing with the Starz. I still have my copy of DUNE I bought in the 70's.
the "interstellar travel" part makes not really sense... how where humans able to build an galaxyspaning empire before finding the spice? pretty sure those who took that stuff just didn't want to go to rehab and told people they needed it^^
@@Tzkaar Did you notice that all the jobs that would be done by robots or computers in other IPs are done by humans in Dune. I'll also give you another hint without spoiling anything ,the Calender is not in AD it is 20,000 years into the future.
@@michitakadouglas4130 i'm aware of those "hints", but they don't answer my question... well, they would, if the answer is AI/Robot uprising. also, you saw the other part of my post? no need to take it serious^^
"At the same timing Paul trips balls from the spice..." - man, you are ruining my childhood memories and one of my favourite books from when I was a teenager! But it was so funny that I blew some air out of my nose.
Why do they use bladed weapons: So first of all they do use guns, missiles, lasers, all that stuff in the Dune Universe. It's just that after thousands of years of their use counter strategies have emerged to limit their effectiveness. Like the way Prey and Predators compete with evolutionary adaptions. Laser guns are called "Lasguns" - and they are commonly used. However, if a lasgun beam interacts with even a small personal shield this results in a large Pseudo Nuclear explosion, so they have to be very careful and selective of targets. Projectile hand weapons are often referred to as "Maula Pistols" - they often fire darts that are more effective at penetrating shields, but they have heavy duty cannons and guns as well. Shields are almost completely effective at repelling fast powerful projectiles or explosives however - but not everyone has shielding all the time. Also keep in mind, all sophisticated computers are banned so this limits what they can do with the tech.
The book is already complicated and it was condensed into a 2hr movie, then you come and condensed it even further into a 15 min recap. Did a good job though. I urge people to read the book, just remember, it's the kind of book you'll have to read twice to get how epic this story is.
@@therealtjpek Yeah, half of the book one. They are going to make 3 movies, as far as I know. It was supposed to be 2 parts only but in this pace they can't cram that story in 5 hrs.
the realistic story of jesus against jews in times of roman empire. the spice represent the oil/ the black gold in which usa, uk and Russia are fighting for monopoly.
The book is godawful slow and boring and just not very good. The only more tedious book I've ever read was Don Quixote. The story is great, the writing is just bad. Well made movies solve that, thankfully
Sidenote: the year 10191 is not in the Gregorian Calendar. I don't remember the details but we are many many MANY more thousands upon thousands of years more into the future if we keep the Gregorian Calendar, which I think is called the Old Calendar or Ancient Calendar in the Dune universe.
I agree with Haroon. Even tho I am the one reading you this script lol. I think this movie, more than anything else in the past decade, deserves (NEEDS) to be seen on an IMAX screen!
Dune fanboy here. It's not set in 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG (after guild). About 10,000 years before Dune starts, there was a huge war between men and AI (or thinking machines) which humans win. They make a law to "not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" so AI, Robots, even calculators are all outlawed in this universe. Depending on which source you use, it's set somwhere between 30,000-50,000 in the future. They aren't testing Paul if he is the "messiah of Arakkis", they are testing to see if he is, essentially, the "Messiah". The bene gesserit have planted myths on many worlds, Arakkis is just one. And lastly, the Ecologist isn't going to take a thopter, she wa calling a worm to ride (there's one scene with her holding the hooks for this just before the Sardukar kill her). Sorry, I had to.
none of this makes any sense to me. how do you have spaceships if they can't even calculate. Why are the people planting fake myths waiting for something they literally invented. Why would they give up on making the planet a paradise if it really was that valuable? Like, literally makes no sense at all. Why would they not just kill all the giant sandworms instead of letting them destroy stuff? So many illogical things in this civilization
Small correction: the Bene Gesserit are not trying to create a "Messiah of Arrakis", nor is "the One" supposed to save Arrakis from exploitation. The Bene Gesserit could care less how Arrakis is treated as long as society is stable and the spice continues to flow. They want to create the Kwisatz Haderach because they believe that he can prevent the collapse of human society and can find a path for humanity that will endure.
One problem I've always had with Dune: If spice is required for FTL travel, how did humans get to Arrakis to discover spice? 10,000 years is not long enough to get very far at slower than light speed.
Maybe they discovered some in small amounts nearby, but exhausted the supply? Or maybe the method of travel including spice was discovered later on, after spice had already been discovered?
They had computers that could navigate, but in the past computers became sentient and basically went "Skynet" on them, and humans managed to survive waging the Butlerian Jihad against intelligent machines. Spice was found as a way to make selected humans act as navigators, so they didn't need computers to navigate. Advanced AI is NOT allowed in the galaxy. Its also the reason why they have "Mentats" - the guys who are like human computers. They showed one in the movie doing some calculations.
@@allynflinchbaugh4570 Well I've read hundreds of Scifi books but have never been able to finish Dune, it was the most boring read ever, even worse than Asimov's Foundation. Great writing but boring for me. My knowledge is from the movies and series.

@zz i barely know anything but i know how the shields work thats how i know that the guy doesnt know much. Edit: you comment about chemical weapons is a good point tho.
@@fjellfinn4618 i dont know obviously thats why im asking, to discuss, you know, just melee isnt logical with all those space travel/massive rockets/bombs tech available. and given that we've seen how well poisoned gas works cant you make poison grenades or grenade launchers?
And Paul just have dreams and premonitions before the he enters in contact with the spice, and the Fremen think he might be their messiah but don't jump into conclusions, and the name Muad'Dib because he dreams about people calling him that, so he chooses that name. I feel like either the movie (once again, thanks Hollywood) fucks the way it wishes with the books argument or the people doing the recap did a terrible job explaining it.
@@faylure9985 I would incline to the recap being off. The movie is really good. They got the visualization right. Yeah, it doesn't have the same kind of detail the book has (characters thoughts, more explanation). But that would have to be at least a 10 episode series. For example I like what they did with the Foundation.
@@IrisBread you don’t know what AD is? That’s the calendar system that we currently use in the real world. 2021 AD. Also After Guild is after the Spacing Guild was established in the Dune universe
there is already a Dune movie from 1980s which is good in its own way. Current movies has so many scene to scene copy from original one with better CGI
Honestly, as someone who read the book 1 and 2... I think this movie sucks. Like.. really, really sucks. The only thing that's good is the cinematography.
@@tonystank2680 It is the best adaptation, but still sucks. And no, I won't appreciate it. I have my opinion and I know why it sucls for me. Just like someone loves it, I can hate it.
@@tonystank2680 I feel like it would've been wayyyyy better as a TV series (kinda like GOT). There's just too much world building in the books to have this adaptation be just a 2hr movie.
This movie was great! The sounds, world building, and characters were all amazing! I'm glad they broke it into three parts so they could focus on the story, but omg I can't wait for more!
I think the Build up took a little too long and it's kinda unnecessarily loud but Goddamn is this movie a masterpiece, the atmosphere and story is just pure art
Dune is such a good film, cant wait for part 2 in 2023. Love these kinds of movies where its long and usually ends in a cliffhanger, makes it feel like it isnt a rushed story Edit: On a side note, I feel like Jessica/Rebecca Ferguson should win an Oscar because her emotional acting is insanely realistic
So now when someone asks me “Have you seen Dune?” I’ll have to reply “It’s complicated.” The same is true for any of the dozens and dozens of films I’ve “seen” through any of the various recapped channels.
Fun fact: Star wars was heavily inspired by Dune's story and technology back then, but they implemented on their own story to make it less recognizable towards dune.
The Fremen call him 'Mahdi' when they see him after he comes to Dune. Later he chooses the name ' Muad'Dib' as his Fremen name when he joins them. They sound similar, but are very different.
Mahdi is a reference to the Mahdist War. With Mahdi meaning liberator, prophet, aka the person who calls in a new world order. In contrast Muad'Dib is just cute lil Desert rat. It portrays how fate puts Paul into the role of a jihad leader while he is horrified by it.
@@nabila6716 They're probably gonna stop around Dune Messiah or Children of Dune because the books after that are mostly characters thinking about things with a little bit of action. Those books are still incredible in my opinion but they just don't work as well on the big screen
Spoiler: The Planet is "Iraq"is. The emperor is Saddam. The space = oil. This whole thing was written in the mid 60s, so the author saw the coming wars.
But that doesn't make you stupid at all, it's actually a nice analogy. You've kinda understood the context, but not 100%. But then you took a different, similar example to help you fully understand that specific context. I don't know what it is, but it's far from stupid. ^^
It's literally exactly the same as most countries on earth today, where there is a Prime Minister/President etc, and then state/territory leaders etc. A heirarchy is really not that hard of a concept to understand when it literally happens in modern day life, and has been for as far as history dates back...
The year 10191 ag is actually 30,000 years in our calendar since bg ends in 20,000 bg and the first dune book takes place in 10191 ag which means it's about 30,000 years in the human calendar which the people from dune don't use
When you said "Dune", i wondered what if the movie was called "Dude", the way you pronounced it was already amazing, so i think it should be called "Dude".
NOOO! 10191 AG meaning After Guild. But the Guild was founded in around year 12000 in our calendar. That means Dune takes place around 22 THOUSAND years from now.
OMG I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME WITH MY DAD EVER SINCE I WAS A KID i think it was called dune 2000, i still play it sometimes, i swear its the best strategy game
@@DeepDarkBoys dear narrator. I love your vids but this movie.. this movie is one to be experienced from the theatres. Most people that watch ur recaps wont see the movie. And you cant experience Hans Zimmer's music from a recap. So i think you should have added that this movie is a must watch or something and to experience truly go to the cinemas😁
Loved this recap. I watched the full movie and this really helped fill in some blanks. One mistake I found though, 8:26 Jessica IS pregnant. She was surprised her son knew when she had only just found out herself!
The book is addicting, it has a lot more detail. It can be a little bit dry at times, but once you get past it you won’t be able to put it down. Paul’s mother and sister become very important later in the book. He sees his mother and future sister with the blue spice-melange eyes. I won’t spoil anything more than what the movie showed!
The daughter is considered an abomination. She will be one of the most powerful people in the Dune lore. That's all I'll say about that. But Paul can see the past of many generations and can also see paths of the future(he cannot fully predict the future).
Dune is the best adaptation for a book i have ever had the gift of witnessing, it is such an amazing book/movie, cant wait for the second movie for book one!
the team here is really cool! thanks for listening to the community, making really enjoyable content and summing up the movies super well! edit: forgot the completely amazing custom captions too!!
This movie was a big and positive surprise. In a time when seemingly all movies are all about flashy explosions and fast paced action, this movie keeps the relatively slow tone of the books and makes it work. While also managing to keep true to the books where it matters most. (Though, it doesn't change anything, it still was odd to see Liet as female. There's no reason for this character to be male, not even in the books, so this change is purely cosmetic, it still was this "huh, why?" moment.) One thing, but that's not exclusive to this movie adaption, I dislike the reason they give for why the Emperor wants to kill of House Atreides. Yes, the "power-grabbing" reason seems good enough, but the book reason is so much better as it describes the fear of loss of power that House Corrino suffers from a lot better. Especially as it also puts importance on the fact that the Emperor actually very much likes the Duke Leto Atreides. What that reason is? Sardaukar. Leto dared to train some of his soldiers to be at least as deadly as the Imperial Sardaukar and thus threatening the very foundation of House Corrinos power.
@@TheDawgButter yes buddy. Recently released movie. Its a must watch imo and if u havent read the books u might feel a little bit confused hence watch the breakdown by new rockstars.
you deserved a sub for this i was looking for someone to do a reaction or recap in this movie and couldn't find and was about to watch it, but you saved me
An amazing film with excellent cinematography, cast and acting, score, sound design, literally everything. I --arrrrr-- this movie and was so stunned I went to see it in theatres. I highly recommend you do the same if you still can. This review while fairly good doesn't actually cover everything/confuses quite a few important parts that come with watching the film yourself.
Y'know man, I was really excited to see this movie at the cinema, and when I finally watched it, due to me being tired as hell from work and stuff, I kinda fell asleep and missed some important plot points so when the movie was over, I had no clue on what it was actually about. Anyways long story short, thanks for making this recap, since I can now comprehend what I actually watched
this is the new Dune looks like they didn't mess it up. but they cut it in half..... thank you. I'll definitely be going to the theater to see it on the big screen when it's put together
Yeah the cut in half caught me off guard too xD But at least they didn't rush it... It's not like the Hobbit where a small big is expanded to fit three movies. Dune has enough content to fit four and a half in my opinion. Also yeah watch in in theater because the Soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is THE BOMB!! The moment the bagpipes started blaring was just magical.
Soundtrack was insane, the cinema I was in made me feel like these ships actually landed in front of me! Also these bagpipes. Bloody bagpipes. It was so cool when they first were played them and when they used them again in that fight scene, it was hard not to laugh like a maniac. What a ridiculous but fantastic moment!
Why EXACTLY the spice so important: Imagine you have a boat, and you want to go from one island to the next one. You have a boat, fueled up and ready to go, but there is one thing you still need - a pilot / navigator. Okay, so a fast boat is more difficult to pilot than a slow boat - makes sense?. Now lets imagine the boat is going so fast it's bending the fabric of space time! Just imagine how difficult that would be to pilot!. So - you might think - use a computer to plot the course and pilot the boat BUT ( it's a big but) in Dune computers of that level of sophistication are banned by religious scripture and law. Thinking machines are equivalent to our idea of Satan so thats a no goer. So a human has to do it - how do you get a human to get to a level of awareness that they can navigate a ship that goes so fast it's bending space time ( without getting lost or crashing into a planet / asteroid or sun ) is to get someone of sufficient mathematical ability really, really, really high on Spice. The Navigators require HUGE amounts of Spice to plot a course through space time - they live in canisters that have spice gas pumped into them. Now consider - who really has the power in the Dune universe - is it the Emperor with his badass army? The combined forces of the Houses? NO! - the most powerful is the Spacing Guild of Navigators - no one else can fold space ( they have a legally approved Monopoly) , no one else knows how! Without the Guild the Emperor is stranded, marooned on his home Planet, years, decades maybe even centuries away from the other Planets in his Empire even if traveling at near light speed. Simples!
Hopefully this would become the thing of the future as we, humans barely set upon on any planets except the moon. As for space travel, we're not quite advanced to the point we could travel from planet to planet as it takes many years.
I really do hope this reboot actually takes off. It's been a long time that we finally have a sensible film adaptation of the books since the first film from decades ago.
People have personal shields known as holtzman shields that stop fast moving projectiles. They can also stop fast moving blades and if you use energy weapons on this shield it can trigger a mini nuke on the battlefields. As a result people have to use specially designed blades and air fired projectiles if they want to get past your shields. Guns are used by factions but that's when you're fighting unshielded opponents like the fremen early on aka lasguns. There's also the fuedal system at play here with the honor system in combat giving your factions credibility in battle and helping to project power with other factions. This is why harkonens and the emperor's sadukhar are feared since they have a reputation of raising shock troops unphased by death and fear. Alot of factions like bene Gesserit and mentats and the spacing guild rely heavily on spice augmentation or genetic Manipulation and so on to get powers and abilities that make them formidable. So yea there are good reasons why the dune universe does not commonly use guns.
good reasons? These are all shity reasons, a shield can stop a bullet but can't stop a knife? In year 10k+ humans still use swords and knfies, humans never ever used swords as their main weopen, we used swords in the battle. Sword is almost always useless, because its too dangerous to get in close range against your opponent. This is a movie, so stop trying to make it look realistic, this isn't realistic at all, this is absurd at best.
@@yavuz9038 these aren't normal blades and they have to hit you at an angle and a certain speed or they won't penetrate. It's not like you can go schwing schwing and it will cut through said shields... The shields also have to let things like air through for example so you don't suffocate. They have to allow your heat to escape or you'd die from exhaustion in one. There's a million reasons in the lore that these shields made guns obsolete in dune. Don't act like in the books or the movies a forceful careless thrust with a regular blade will penetrate. Bullets are useless and energy based weapons would create mini nukes like shockwaves so close combat is a given in this series based heavily in finesse and technique. You have a problem with that lore take it up with Frank Herbert.
@@fluidicrift yeh the old "these blades are speacial and you have to use them a certain way" crab. If they can make special blades, I bet they can also make special guns. Also where is robots? Why are humans fighting other humans? In the year 10k+ humans still have to drive helicopters lol. Why do they have to use shields? why cant they just use computers? Why arent they still living in simulations? Dont get me wrong, this lore is really good, but like its not realistic, why did they have to say that its year 10k+, if we survive till 10k+ we wont need blades :). They just had to make it exciting that's why they made it so we could see some cool fighting scenes I guess. But as I said, humans never used blades as their main weopen, special or not, blades are useless in a normal fight.
