Watch the album trailer for Hilary Hahn's upcoming album "In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores", released on Deutsche Grammophon.
The idea for "In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores" began to take shape when Hahn noticed that new encore pieces were not being showcased as much as other types of contemporary works. Shorter pieces remain a crucial part of every violinist's education and repertoire, and Hahn believed that potential new favorites should be encouraged and performed as well. What is unique about the project, though, is the incredible depth that Hahn has gone to to discover new works. She explored the music of all the composers before personally contacting them and ran a blind online contest with open submissions to find the 27th composer.
The 26 commissioned composers are Antón García Abril, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, Lera Auerbach, Richard Barrett, Mason Bates, Tina Davidson, David Del Tredici, Avner Dorman, Du Yun, Søren Nils Eichberg, Christos Hatzis, Jennifer Higdon, James Newton Howard, Bun-Ching Lam, David Lang, Paul Moravec, Nico Muhly, Michiru Oshima, Kala Ramnath, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Max Richter, Somei Satoh, Elliott Sharp, Valentin Silvestrov, Mark-Anthony Turnage, and Gillian Whitehead. Jeff Myers was chosen to be the final 27th composer by online contest.

Gosh, this is interesting. Much credit to her for commissioning and recording such exquisite new music. She has never just rested on her many laurels and kept performing and recording the standard repertoire. I hope at least some of the 27 pieces do have a life beyond this recording.

Hilary Hahn is amazing! I hope you don't think that everyone who makes faces on stage is full of shit. I'm a musician and knowing many performers, can attest that it is not some ego driven thing but a love for the music that one is performing!

There are many bloated reputations and grand egos among soloists but Hilary Hahn is not one of those. What a great musician with integrity and vision. Very clear-headed and straightforward. I'm glad to support such a performer! Thanks Mrs. Hahn for your personality as well as your musicianship!

I believe that it is the duty of all performers to carry out such projects. The greatest performers in the past used to present the music of their era. We have become the only era that lives only on what the old presented, without caring about the wonderful composers around us. It is also important for the performer, as he actually recognizes the importance of cooperation with the composer in terms of interpretation It is a deep intellectual work and puts the performer in front of new questions that he does not ask when it is either a work that has been performed thousands of times..well done Hilary Hahn

You can't even know how amazing this one is. It is off-the-chain genius. And I mean absolute, and utter genius. Its experimental, classical, haunting, romantic, funny, absolutely every conceivable human emotion put to music. I don't think we can fully know the importance of this for some time coming. All I can say is just musical genius. So many angles. I ABSOLUTELY stand at attention for all involved in this project. You are all geniuses. . .

it is the best performance of the work, PERIOD. Just check out any violinist you know, established ones or new ones (like the guy from Korea). None are even in the same galaxy.

Hillary, I really like the appreciation you have for sharing information that you know people who listen to you and classical in general crave to have more of. Thanks for satisfying more than our curiosity on how the album was put together. I also like the way you want to make salient the work of other musicians through your playing...a little glimpse of what socializing music can be like in the hands of a musical entrepreneur like you.

I just wonder whether it's still possible to send a violin piece which would be from middle east (even if wished some of them are challenging with quarter notes)? off course I'd fully understand even if this ignored.Through this project (in 27)you showed that you're not only a genius violinist but a wonderful human being.
