Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones is investigating reopening the Marsden Point oil refinery, saying it will help secure New Zealand's fuel supply. Meanwhile, oil companies are grappling with minimum fuel stockholding obligations that will come into effect next year.
Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

@nathshaw

Absolutely right. Various militaries from various sides will shut down shipping lanes.. Narrow ones such as that between Indonesia and Singapore are much easier to shut off. Starvation of countries for fuel, food, and other supplies is definitely a powerful weapon of war. New Zealand **might** be able to get oil direct from USA, or perhaps ships passing to the South of Australia; unlikely via current shipping routes; and if there are ships prepared to even sail here... we'll pay a fortune for it. And we'll need to, without diesel to run our trucks, people will starve.
@jiaweike3518

Don't worry everyone. Chinese would be really stupid if they invade Taiwan. There is hardly much resources they can get from acquiring a land which they already claim is their own. I saw online that most Taiwanese celebrities are not aligned with the politicians and they don't want a war with China. Businesses from Taiwan want to make money from the Mainland China as well. I think New Zealand would want to establish trades with countries like Malaysia and Indonesia too. Malaysia exports quite a lot of petroleum according the CIA factbook.

A small enemy naval force could readily stop tankers arriving in NZ and our current Navy could not ensure the tankers get here. In that situation NZ would run out of petrol and diesel after less than a month and basically all transport in NZ would come to a halt, except for horses and bicycles. Life, as we know it, will come to a grinding halt if the machines can’t move. It all comes down to cost. How much does it cost to import crude vs the refined fuel?what’s the cost of refining crude? How much does it cost to run the refinery? Is it profitable etc. those are the questions that needs to be answered. Along with that a risk analysis would have to be conducted.. what are the consequences if they do or don’t build a new refinery or increase the reserves… It’s interesting and complex. Looking forward to how it develops.

Labour screwed the pooch without doubt. But National is not doing anything good for New Zealanders, they have cut funding to the massively underfunded health system. Have you been to a hospital or required surgery recently? There is not enough staff as the conditions are terrible. There is unprecedented numbers leaving for Australia and other countries which is a massive skill loss. Nz will be left with foreigners and dole bludgers. National has never improved conditions/life for regular people, only their big donars get treated well. The wholesale cuts to government services are to pay for tax cuts which they hope to use to win the next election. Instead of creative and beneficial policies winning elections they have to bribe with worthless tax cuts that benefit a small minority of people. Wages are massively lagging behind inflation and absolutely nothing is being done to improve it. Both governments are appallingly bad for our great country.

And then some politician sold it off to the big boys!!!! 30 years later they close it down cause its uneconomic. If they hadn't been paying their shareholders such large dividends they could have paid to keep it better maintained. Since closing down the refinery side of Marsden we have received 3 shiploads (I believe) of substandard fuel, that in the old days would have been purified by our own refinery. Now, all they can do with a substandard shipload of fuel is dilute it by mixing it with all the good fuel!!!!!!!!

It is entirely sensible for the Government to get a report on what amount of fuel we store. Once we know how much the present infrastructure can store, we can then plan for the future. It is unlikely that Marsden Point will be re-opened as cost is a big factor, however, going on the figures quoted it seems we need to have a minimum storage quantity quite a bit higher than 28 days. The amount in storage (including at petrol stations) should be available at any given moment, not just on any day selected. I think we need to store in the range of 40 to 50 days. It also appears (though not mentioned in the piece) that we are importing bitumen for road making and repairs. This has massively increased the cost of roading in the last two years. Something to think about.
@ElusivGaming

Not just that, any manufacturing done here is using imported materials because they closed all our mines down, which in turn increases the cost of everything across the board. We've become almost completely reliant on the rest of the world for everything we produce when we have the materials right here to do it ourselves. Pretty arrogant to say "we have to save our environment by not mining anything" but then expect the other countries around the world to do that to their environment to prop up our supply of everything.
