In Baltimore, where gun violence claims the lives of hundreds each year, what is missing from so many young men is a solid foundation. The youth workers behind a program called Roca (Spanish for rock) aim to provide that grounding, by teaching alternative ways to handling the stresses of life in a challenging environment. As one Roca participant, a former drug dealer, tells "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel, "I came a long way, from nothing to something now."

Finally CBS! These are the kinds of stories you do best! See..you can still bring us what we love you for This is the best story you have done in years! It's about hope..and changing our thoughts that lead to violence..because an angry person without out a gun us still an angry person! The efforts being made here by these men IS WHAT IT IS GOING TO TAKE TO END ALL THE VIOLENCE! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Exactly… “changing minds” to be resilient, virtuous, and of good character is the solution to the root cause of violence, destruction and poverty. Changing or removing constitutional protections on the human right to tools of self defense is a red herring… down a very dangerous path!

As long as you are aware and know specific areas to go to, you will be fine. It probably would be better to travel with a local. It’s like going anywhere, try not to stand out and just blend in, walk confidently. Don’t think fearfully. Canton, Fells, Fed Hill, Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Locust Point, areas near large parks are all generally very safe. - a local Baltimorean who was born and raised here.

Get the guns OFF of our streets! God bless these people who are saving valuable lives. This is a national problem! Other countries have made guns illegal, so, there is no reasonable excuse that we can’t do the same. Make guns illegal!!! Cherish lives, which cannot be replaced! I taught in Baltimore for over twenty years and all of my former students & their families are in my daily prayers. May God keep them and everyone safe, healthy, & happy. May they always make good decisions throughout their precious lives. Much love to all. Thanks for sharing this life saving message.

Brian, I taught in a small private elementary school in the 1980’s and 90’s. Most of my students tested well above grade level at that time. Teachers teach according to a curriculum guide. If your statistics are correct, the curriculum should be improved. Most teachers are certainly not there to make a lot of money and do care about the children.

"guns" are not the problem. The mindset of these young men is the problem. I've been black all my life. I had a strong father figure, uncles, older cousins, who taught me how to resolve conflict without resorting to using a weapon. If you could magically wisk away every firearm on the planet, but not fix the mindset problem, they'd still use the most deadly tool around to resolve conflicts.

I despair for our young people, but especially men of color, who will have their lives cut short by gun violence. Initially I was gonna start off this comment by asking, how is it that so many immigrants, documented and undocumented come to this country with little or nothing and make use of the privilege to be here and just be able to work? But thats not the right question, those immigrants like myself had a solid foundation instilled by parents that cared about our well being. Those spankings and rebukes #discipline I got from my mother and father were not acts of abuse, but instilling basic fundamentals of right and wrong and consequences for your actions. Other methods of discipline are applied through different families, so its not one size fits all approach. But the key to making better people is that your parents need to be in your life. Now, honestly, that guy with 5 kids, I wish him all the best, but I hope this is not history repeating itself. Its sad though, through the eyes of an immigrant how so much opportunities are thrown away.

How do we not acknowledge there is a cultural problem? History repeats itself in the families of these communities and we just throw money at it, hoping something changes.

It's not cultural. It's mindset. No "culture" inherently resorts to violence. Any of these young men raised with a different mindset would make different decisions. Programs like ROCA are changing that mindset and teaching them a better way.

@@kevinm.8682 Call it what you will. A cycle of absent fathers and victim mentality results in a cultural dysfunction. Yes, I'm sure this is a great program. But no one wants to deal with root causes.

"Lack of resources, opportunities"? Really? Always someone else's fault, and not the perpetrators. Perhaps a lack of supervision from parents, lack of discipline from parents, a lack of "wanting" to make something of themselves.
@Wixyification
@Wixyification Год назад
Can't legislate any of that. Do you want to mandate parents supervise their kids despite having 1 or 2 jobs? Would you like to mandate how parents discipline their children to your own liking? Or would you like to fund non-regressive social programs to actually address the issue instead of moralizing about it?

In this case it's true, most of us Americans, especially we blacks won't bring that back in style willingly at least, maybe under the force of crises yes but not willingly.
