Chinese Canadian.... so you from Vancouver? I hear that city is awesome! But I bet you get that a lot. The worst problems I suspect you get are in high school where everyone expects you to do well in every subject especially math when that just is not the case. I believe the pride of asian families (especially those who've recently immigrated) pushing their kids to become doctors and other respectable jobs of that nature is where these sort of concepts come from. As a third generation, I'm not sure if your parents were like that but I'm sure you've had to deal with all sorts of things.

Wonderfully done.This is a painful situation (being an in-betweener). I saw this happen with a 1st generation Chinese- American friend in high school.This happens among black folks,too. It's no fun being constantly called an 'oreo' and being excluded by kids of your same race.Fortunately as you get older you come into your own and find other in-betweeners as well as folks from your same race and other races who accept you as you are.😊

I’ve felt this my whole life as well as a Black American. Not Black enough for my own community and not necessarily one to fit historically amongst other communities. Even as a descendant from Africa, it’s offensive to say African American even though that is what I am because of current first generation African immigrants currently living in the US. So to be stripped of identity and history is a difficult burden to bear in addition to systematic injustice that makes it difficult not to be targeted in today’s society. This video helped me find solace in knowing others experience the same struggle. Thank you for using your creative talents to help heal our community of “inbetweeners”. There are a lot of us and we need it. Blessings on you. -MJ

I have that with being biracial. A lot of times i'm the darkest person in the room, so I get treated like I'm black, but then when i'm with a black crowd, i'm the lightest person in the room and treated like I'm too white... it's weird

I have a similar experience. In general, I don't get noticeably treated any differently among my black, white, asian friends, but I tend to get the majority of comments regarding being "the light skinned" or not being very black from the black community. It's kinda hard to fit a certain mold when half your life was spent in LA, half in the south, or when you've been naturally more inclined to what would be considered asian cultural habits all your life (some more augmented through asian language and culture study). Not to mention, being half hispanic, I tend to get comments regarding that aspect of my heritage, especially since I don't speak a lick of Spanish yet can speak Japanese conversationally fluently. Fortunately, I've never felt the need to fit in to racial or cultural categories, but the fact people still have a hard time accepting that with everyone's unique upbringing and interests they could be completely different from whatever preconceptions we box them into is beyond me.

Ride the Wave it's not about racism, it's just that people who have grown up in different homes and cultures act different and get different things. So like I don't get some slang/references/experiences of my black friends but at the same time have slang, references, joke, and experiences that my white friends don't get. Its not about treating people as other than human, it's just how you understand/fit in with others

I grew up in a house with Asian parents, who grew up in South Korea, but they were nothing like my Asian friends parents. They were wealthy, which instantly set me apart from my Asian peers. They gave me an allowance, unlike my Asian friends. I have a spoiled brother who smokes and does weed and my parents support him, and I wasn't beat up for getting a A, not an A+. I hate being apart from my Asian heritage, but it's much easier to understand when you're a Chinese adoptee. Your lucky.

This was such a great video and let me just say that I don't think Tokyo Ghoul was referenced by accident here. One of the most memorable quotes from that anime says: "You are a single person who has two worlds in which to belong." So I think the concept of that anime fits very well with the concept of the story we have here so thumbs up for making that reference secretly!

I definitely felt really connected to this video (even) as an African American who grew up in England and COLORADO and never fit in with Black people or White people. In college I ended up really connecting with the Asian community (took a lot of heat for it), but I found myself and learned to accept my "in between-ness." 10:55 reminded me of when I met a one of my first friends freshman year. He was a Korean American who was "too Black" for everyone, so we easily bonded. Thanks for this video and the memories/feels :)

That's so interesting. I'm mixed Black & White and looking back while growing up, most of my closest relationships were with people that were either Asian or mixed with Asian. From my first bestie in kindergarten to my best homeboy in college. It was never intentional -- as I always had friends of all races -- it just ended up that I was the tightest with my Asian friends. They were always the easiest, most honest relationships I had. I always felt at home! **reminisces fondly**

madrespect Since we're getting deeper - that happened to me! One of my closest friends in elementary school was Filipino. My first friend and best friend for elementary/middle school in the US was half Korean, half French. In high school I was good friends with the handful of Asian students. In college I accidentally joined a "mostly Asian but not limited to Asian" group and ended up staying because I felt so welcomed compared to a few of the other groups that I checked out. That inevitably linked me with numerous other AAPI.

Thank you so much. This was a really great short. I am adopted from China by Caucasian parents and when I went to my older school I was always the somewhat-Chinese girl that knew some Mandarin from Chinese school. But when I meet international students or people who grew up in Asian homes, I feel like I am lacking some of that culture.

I watch this at least once a year cause it really does hit home. There’s expectations and stereotypes being Korean. I’m 2nd Generation Korean American. Born and raised in Texas. I definitely value my culture being raised by my parents and grandparents (super Korean lol). I feel like relationships were always hard cause I wasn’t Korean enough to date a Korean and I wasn’t American enough to date anyone else. My own interest always seemed be “in between.” The crazy thing is, I’m in an amazing relationship with a Chinese international student. I thought she was Korean when we first met cause she spoke Korean. Turns out, our level of Korean is the same and we have the same interest in Korean culture. With all this, she teaches me about Chinese culture and I teach her American culture. Took me 26 years to really break down these cultural walls and really understand that, although culture is rich and important, in the end, it doesn’t matter when it comes to building friendships and relationships.

Same. Grew up all my K-8th years around Mexicans and African Americans. When I had the chance to go to a majority Asian high school, I thought it was what I wanted, But turned it down for where all my other friends went. I realized couldn't and didn't relate to the Asians that went there at all. Even the Asian friends I had from K-8. I was the only one who chose not to switch schools. It was hard to "fit in" when I was the only Asian guy in my class among 2 Asian girls. I was always seen and reffered to as "the Asian dude". You just gotta learn to accept that but not let it define you. And looking back it was the best decision I made.

This is so relatable. I look completely asian, but my dad is from Denmark and my mom was born in Korea, but adopted as 8 months old to Denmark. I grew up getting those jokes too. And i even got rejected by a girl the same way he did at 2:10.

I am disappointed that some people in the comments think that Wongfu productions and other Asian youtubers are pushing a false narrative or that they are pushing an agenda of asians making themselves separate from others. I understand that many Asian Americans have not felt the same way that the people that run wongfu feel or other asian youtubers feel or that you all have also not experienced the same things. Just because there are people out there that hasn't experienced feeling diferent from other races does not anyone else's experience any less true or real. Wongfu productions is a place that showcases real talent and real stories. I grew up hearing AND seeing how Asian Americans felt the same way and was treated the same way that Leo was in the short. Even now I see it happening here in America. Wongfu productions and other Asian youtubers should not be demonized for telling their stories because it's stories like these that makes humans feel relatable to one another. I've been enjoying and learning from wongfu for years and I hope to continue to enjoy them as time goes on.

Deadgirlwalking666 The people of wongfu are ASIAN AMERICAN! So what exactly are you talking about? There are other channels out there that represents Asian countries/continents. Wongfu does NOT have to do that. Seems to me as though you completely miss the point of what and who wongfu is about. What's also funny is that Wongfu has many fans who actually live in Asia and many of them don't feel alienated. They've always made it clear from the very beginning that they talk about things from an Asian American perspective because that's who they are. You completely missed the point and the mark.

They try to represent all Asian groups but it's harder to find actors of other groups besides Chinese, Korean, and Japanese-Americans as Wong Fu is run by them. If you were to follow them on social media, you would know that they push for Asian representation in media of all Asians, not just the three groups above.

I wanted to blend into groups so desperately that I learned to act and talk in certain ways just so I could be accepted into their groups. And finally, after a year, I realized that there is no need to change myself or force myself into any specific group, we are all different, unique in fact, so we don't 'belong to' any specific group, we are comfortable the way we are, and we don't need to stick that label on ourselves or others.

SO RELATABLE! I never felt as though I was Asian enough to fit in with the "cool kids" in a heavily Asian populated high school and this later shifted to feeling super out of place when I became one of the few Asians in a predominately Caucasian work environment. I've definitely struggled trying to find a happy balance between two seemingly contrasting worlds but have slowly learned to enjoy being myself and appreciate this unique blend of being "in between". Great job Taylor and Mike!! Thank you so much for exploring this concept!

I'm adopted from China and live in a very small white town and can really relate. I know I try too hard to fit a mold but this made me realize I shouldn't try so hard and to just be myself.

I'm an Indian and I grew up watching Hollywood and Russian cinema. Which later turned to japanese anime and dramas. It's hard to relate to almost anyone unless it's food or politics. But hey, we are more common than we are different, right? Yeeehaaaw

As someone who has been following them for a while, the quality of their short has.. changed. Like their subs, they're kind of stuck at one place not improving as much as they could. Don't get me wrong I grew up with some of their videos, they're great, but it feels like it hasn't evolved much.

It’s not only refreshing but really liberating to see this. It’s a struggle I’ve gone through down to the parts where my expectations changed dramatically when I entered college and started to interact with more Asian students. That realization the full spectrum of personality and culture runs within the Asian community too and they’re not going to be your buddies just because of being Asian hits you like a rock. It definitely made me feel pretty stupid having that expectation of suddenly fitting in leaving my predominately white midwestern state for college. Really nice video guys. Thanks for addressing a hard topic.

I just now saw this for the first time. You did a great job conveying the "in between" feeling in such a short film. I am familiar with this topic, I am an adopted Korean that grew up in northern MI. My whole family is white; however, I have never wanted to trade my life - I have a lot to be thankful for. At the time of writing this, I am 36, I am here to say that being "in between" isn't a bad thing at all. Is it awkward sometimes?! Hell yes! :) To those in a similar situation and feel a heavy burden, know that it will be okay! Childhood, high school, and college will have some situations where it seems impossible to fit in. However, you will learn the most about yourself when you keep an open mind and experience other cultures. Whether you are adopted, multi-ethnic, multi-generation people, it will bring you insight and an empathy toward others and their cultures in only ways you can understand because you have lived it. Keep your eyes forward, your mind steady, and your heart centered.

Dang, killing it on the relatable scale. I came from a mostly white community, and the parts showing what it's like being Asian with mostly white friends is spot on. I hated that dishware joke growing up cause everyone would tell me it, wanting to see my reaction. Then, I went to a mostly Asian university and had the same feelings as Leo - I can finally belong and have similar people around me with no more ignorant remarks. But, apparently that wasn't right because I wasn't "Asian" enough. My white friends thought I was too Asian and played into the Asian stereotypes, and my Asian friends thought I was too white washed and pretty much thought I was a white person in an Asian body. I got asked things like "Do you take your shoes off at home?" or "What do you eat everyday?" by both people cause I couldn't fit in with either one. I pretty much ended up like Leo though, I found some great friends who are also in between, and some other friends who aren't but are woke af. All in all, this short really hits the nail on the head. Great job guys!

I loved this! I really wish I had this back in the day. But I know we weren't even old enough to put into words what we experienced. But It's so great to see the story come out to full light so everyone else can learn and really put a finger on their own experiences to learn how to make things better for future generations.

I never really comment on videos, but I felt this video is important enough for me to comment on, because I know how this all feels. But mine is one step further, because when I was still a baby I was adopted from South Korea into an American family. I grew up in the midwest with barely any Asian populated areas, it made it hard for me to figure out where I fit in. I love this video because they described a lot of the same thoughts I have, especially the feeling of not belonging anywhere. Taylor and Mike did an amazing job with this story, and I love anything Wong Fu makes because they always find a way to turn negatives into positives.

Yeah my older brother is also adopted from South Korea, but he's 6 years older than me so we aren't that close and my parents had made the comment that he's happy with his life here and doesn't really have any interest in his Korean side as much as I do.

Thank you for this!! I am black, born in Canada, grew up with all white people, they didn't see me different, till a move to a different city that was more diverse in culture. I suddenly realized I was not black-enough. I was called "white-wash". I had never heard that. I can totally relate! Thank you. This was a great video. Being Canadian but not white, people asked " where are you from?" So annoying cuz I am from here, I know Canadian history just like anyone else that is Canadian. Thank you for this! Honestly I have felt this way nearly all my life starting from such a young age. I was a 2nd generation Korean-Canadian who grew up in nearly all-white communities. I never fit in with the asians who were around me because they were usually first generation Chinese people and fluent in their language and I barely knew Korean at all. But I was way too asian to fit in with any of the white people. However after watching this film, it made feel better about being in the 'In-Between' and I've connected strongly with the message portrayed. I'm so glad I've been watching WongFu for as long as I've had.

I grew up with a ton of multi-generational Chinese Americans (I myself am a 5th gen). Never thought it was a problem until I moved to the midwest, where almost all Asian-looking people are from Asia or have parents from Asia. I resonate the most with the conversation and encouraging friends to pursue their passions. Now I've learned the in-between with how to mentor others according to their family values and also have a sense of belonging with just myself. The only place you truly belong is within your own skin.

Yeah, I'm black, but I do so many basic things and listen to mainly pop or country music, and I don't get why Jordans are so popular, while loving pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks. I don't really know where I fit in because, I do feel like I am treated differently with my white friends and don't relate to my black friends, and being a awkward social butterfly doesn't help. The worst part is when a white person flirts or shows interest in me when we're toghether, but never in public. It makes me feel as if I'm not good enough, and really confuses me. I know there is a perfect spot for me in the world, but it sure is taking a lot of time for me to find it.

This is so weird. I watched the video because it's WF so why not. Most videos are pretty relatable and because of that I just don't have too many expectations since I know that after watching I'd just be like "yeah, very relatable". But now for the first time I shed a tear and I cannot explain why.The video wasn't sad. No one got actually bullied or killed, nor was there heartbreaking or whatsoever. Though it made me think so much about myself, growing up not knowing where one belongs. From the outside it is something you cannot see. But actually there is so much struggle happening in the inside.

I keep on coming back to watch this because I relate to it so much. Even though I’m not mixed race (I’m Asian) I never really fit in with the other Asians at school, and I used to feel really bad about myself when I would see them all hang out as one big group and that they all know each other well. I felt like a complete outsider. But I’ve come to appreciate my friends, who are of all different ethnicities, and I’ve realized it doesn’t really matter anymore about what background your friends come from. As long as you’re happy with your people, it’s all you really need.

I wholeheartedly agree and I faced a little too much of this sort of identity crisis as a biracial. Even though I'll just kinda laugh it off when I'm teased at by one half of my race, I always felt sad inside and wished I won't be viewed differently by either race. However, I'm glad to have watched this film and it helped me to feel ever so slightly better. I hope you do too as well.

This gave me all of the warm fuzzies inside. :3 And it also makes me feel better about being a first-year transfer at a private college. It gives me hope. Side note: I'm not asian, but anyone can feel this way. Race isn't the only category where someone can be an in-between-er. Age, sex, gender, fashion, experience, the lens with which we view the world based on our own individual experiences.

I have friends who were born here and of many ethnicities (Hispanic, Black, etc.) and upbringings that definitely experienced this in college and even further on in life. Feeling different and like we don't quite fit in a group, ironically makes us fit in the biggest group of all.

I can relate to this sooo much. This is such an important short! I am not an asian or an american, I am from the other side of the earth! But I was born and raised somewhere I am not "from", I am in highschool but I will most likely move to "my country" for college. When I visit my country every year my brothers and I are always treated as different there as well, I always felt like I couldn't belong anywhere... But I LOVE how I could just view it as me belonging to both groups in some ways rather than belonging to none of the groups, which is something not anyone can do! And believing that I might find people one day that see me for more than where I am from or where I was raised! I can't stress how important this is for people like me, this is how art makes positive change in people's lives... THANK YOU!

I can't exactly relate to this because I grew up in the pretty integrated suburbs of Southern California but I showed it to my 57-year-old dad who grew up in SoCal before there were "people like him" and he was so touched and happy that there was a short film like this that really pinpointed exactly what being "different" felt like. So thank you Wong Fu Productions for such a funny and relatable film fit for all ages!!!
