We all have at least one anime that is objectively terrible but we still can't help but to love. For me that one show is GATE - Thus the JSDF Fought there.
GATE is honestly little more than recruitment material for the Japanese army but for me it still managed to tick all the boxes and breathe some much needed life into the otherwise samey and dull fantasy isekai setting. Since who needs magic or cheat skills when you have overwhelming firepower and the full might of the military industrial complex of Japan backing you up?
GATE answers the age old question of could a dragon beat a fighter aircraft or a fantasy army storm a trench line held by machine guns and tanks and the answer is simply BRRRRRRRT and a lot of dead fey creatures. It's si,ple dumb fun but it might ruffle some feathers among fans of the more traditional isekai style.

I don't generally like fantasy isekai but GATE really managed to breathe new life into the otherwise dull genre and I really enjoyed it. "Actually..." insofar as the discussion about it being intended as a JSDF recruitment tool goes, I think it was originally a pretty much fanfic written by a member of the SDF. I don't think it was meant as much to say "hey kids, join up!" but more "I love my job, here is my job through an isekai lens"

As far as I managed to find out that is indeed where the story began, but like any good military struggling for recruits the JSDF wouldn't let a good thing to to waste and have since used characters and events from the manga in recruitment material and it looks like they funded a part of the anime as well.

@@addedcheese I have not heard that the JSDF founded the show at most they mighty have JSDF wear Gate prop and costume that kind of stuff. and provided expertise for the show. Like the correct chain of command, detailed view of a weapon platform that is public but you know good close up shot of how things work.

I am also a military nerd and GATE, even with all its flaws was a memorable experience I don't know if any other anime comes close to the depiction of a sufficiently capable military. Its surprisingly accurate...besides a magical gate inside tokyo and all the harem aspects. They used all the weapons that the real JSDF actually uses and depicted their use very well If there is any other please tell cuz i am itching to find some other anime like this

Saga of Tanya the evil is an other one that is a mixture of military with magic but it leans more on the magic side of things and it's a world war depiction. Still and excellent anime

still they manage to portrait the fantasy militaries as inept bufoons that would only win battles by coincidence. and that is killing alot of mood there.

@@ByTheThroneworld Dont forget that the Empire the biggest Powerhouse there not been keen on magic (like the magic city the party visit later in the show guess what Not part of the Empire, the elfs not part of the Empire if not at war whit them. First send its army into Tokyo it gets slaped into oblivion. then they try and fail to take/hold the hill (First or secound Empire army now gone and probably half the officer corp). then they send the surending kingdoms armies to take the hill and after a 3 days Battle its gone. so I mean by the Time the battle at the Trade town (valkyria ride plays) the Empire dont have an actual army and are panicing to get a new one set up. so I mean the Emporor okey been a complete idiot that have no ide on the actual power of the JSDF and its army (I mean session 2 he first hand sees what a gun does). then he gets a warning shot through the window that clips his fur clock and imbeds the bullet into the carpet a few feet in front of him telling him we can hit you from outside the city wall and not hit anything else. Like he does order the Salt the earth tactic (legit a valid strategy for that time period especually when your army is sort of none existing). problem is JSDF have longe range logistic so removing the food between the gate/hill and the capital does nothing, any other medival army would be dead during the trip.

I think one of the absolute best things in this series was when the JSDF came to clean out the city and instead of the people thinking they would be conquered and turned into slaves they basically let them be and just asked for favorable trade status. It was cited that money and resources to protect and upgrade them would be too much.

The reason the JDF beat those other special forces teams is that they had direct comms with people staring at satellite feeds. The spec forces had whatever kit they could smuggle or source locally, while the JDF had night vision, silenced weapons. The JDF were in defence, so could camouflage their positions. The special forces thought this was a cut and dry kidnapping, so weren't prepared for resistance. They were not allied, and we're fighting each other. THEN there's rory, tearing into them.

consider that the other side also has the same stuff availible and is as well trained as you. we are not talking about some mafia guys trying to abduct a child, we are talking about chinese PLA SOF or russian Speznaz GRU/KSSO, wich have high level training, equipment and similar digital support as the JSDF SOF/NATO SOF (active satelite recon, direct communication with mssion command etc). That there is the avatar of a war got entering the fray is the only thing i would grant here. *Also many special forces rate the japanese and korean special forces quite low due to their limited experience and because they are more of a "show unit", meaning they are really good in excercises where everything is pre planned and no surprises happen, but when youhave to improvise and act out of the box, they fall apart.

I don't agree. I'm ex-military myself and I thoroughly enjoyed Gate. I think it's much deeper and nuanced than you gave it credit for (for example the JSDF didn't defeat the special forces of other nations easily or alone... they had the advantage of being on defense, had satellite assets that the other countries SF units lacked that gave them a more advantageous view of the battlefield, and still it took Rory Mercury, an immortal demigoddess from the other world, to overwhelm and eliminate the other units... it's perfectly reasonable to believe that had Rory not intervened the JSDF may have been overwhelmed and some of our core characters may have been killed or injured). Is it rather obviously JSDF masturbatory recruitment propaganda? You bet. Unabashedly. But that doesn't mean it's bad or lacking in any way. Top Gun when it was released in the mid-80's was also unabashedly a huge military wank fest but it's still an amazing film that has been enjoyed for several generations now; undoubtedly influencing military recruitment stats ever since its release. Your point about waiting and cleaning in the military is also off the mark as the Gate story tends to dwell on very few members of the lower ranks. The main character is an officer and most of his direct supporting characters are middle to upper ranked NCO's. These are not the kind of soldiers you see cleaning. These are the kind of soldiers that order around and manage the lower ranks that do the cleaning and the officer supervises them. And for the record there are multiple instances in the two seasons of the anime where soldiers of all ranks were shown "hurry up and wait"-ing. You weren't overly harsh in your critique so I'm not going to go crazy here. Some of your bias seems relates to your personal tastes/aversion to fantasy/isekai. But you really do sell the show short and I'd encourage anyone to give the show a try at least. My Anime List put's Gate at a ranking of 7.7 out of 10 which I feel is much more accurate than your 6/10 and I personally would give it more like an 8.25/10. It's certainly not perfect. Some of the story arcs are clearly superior to others and there are a couple times where the story drags and becomes a bit muddled in places. Especially during the mid point of the 2nd season. But overall it really is an extremely enjoyable show and the payoff at the end of season 2 is amazing.

I am also ex-military which is the reason I enjoyed the show as much as I did but I still don't think it's very good when viewed objectively and I'm trying to do these reviews from the point of view of an average anime fan. For my own enjoyment alone (which you can see in MAL on my profile) I gave the show a 9 since it really is enjoyable, but only if you are into militaria. Nothing the show does is particularly clever, inventive or unique. It's all fairly standard which is why I gave it a middle of the road score here. The whole spec ops part I still stand behind, I was a tanker so my experience in infantry combat, let alone spec ops, is non existent but it's still 3 teams of 4 against a team of 3 japanese and it looks like the hostiles are approaching from 3 different directions, based on the fact that theyu are shown to not have been aware of one an other before walking into the yard of the inn. Which is a pretty tall order for anyone, even in a defensive position. I'm not saying it's bad that they do this kind of ego stroking here, it is just a little over done at times which makes it quite amusing. As for the cleaning part I included that here as an age old military joke, at least one that was common place in the Finnish army. We used to joke all the time that the only things we ever did was clean and wait, usually wait to do more cleaning and this persisted all they way to officer training. Could be a different thing in other nations militaries since everyone in the Finnish one starts out as a conscript but that I couldn't say for sure.

@@addedcheese Well... again... the average anime fan is probably aware of My Anime List and therefore the average anime fan believes that Gate is a 7.7/10... nearly two full points higher than the rating you gave it. And I was an infantryman. 11HE9. And yeah as an enlisted soldier in the US Army... officers don't clean. And most officers don't ever serve as enlisted before becoming officers. There's a special school for that in the US for exceptional enlisted men recommended for officer positions called Officer Candidate School or OCS and in my time in the military I only met one officer who graduated from that school. And he didn't clean either. At least not as an officer he didn't.

@@addedcheese Oh and the battle at the Inn... I think something you might have missed was that the Americans, Russians, and Chinese were fighting each other as well as the JSDF. So it wasn't three teams of four verses one team of three it was a fifteen man free for all with the JSDF having the defensive/high ground and superior intelligence (in that they had a satellite thermal view of the battle via their command communications so even if they weren't able to see the other soldiers their contact on the radio was able to tell them where they were via preplotted points of reference which is a common infantry defensive tactic of designating fields of fire). And in my assessment of the firefight it was the Americans that were the superior force. They had nearly eliminated the other teams (with help from the JSDF) before Rory intervened and finished off everyone but they also, absolutely would have killed Rory dozens of times over had she not been immune to the effect of their bullets. Yes the JSDF was being shown as more professional than they probably are but I was stationed at Fort Benning (now called Fort Moore) and as such I participated in training foreign militaries through the "School Of Americas" which as you might imagine is the school which America uses to train foreign soldiers and so I know from experience that America's efforts to train closely allied military forces like the JSDF have produced extremely positive results and so many of our allies are very nearly as good as we are. And that's saying something because if you don't recognize America's soldiers (and especially their special operations) as the deadliest, most efficient, and most technologically advanced fighting force in human history you haven't been paying attention. So to say someone who is a close ally like Japan has special operations soldiers that are on par with America's is not a huge stretch. And while Gate was undoubtedly a JSDF wankfest other than the scenes that took place in Japan against other Earth military forces the JSDF was up against medieval level tactics and technology. They didn't have to be anything more than marginally competent to be overwhelmingly superior to the enemy.

@@RemedialRob 1. I still don't see why it's such a problem to you that I gave the show a lower score than what is the MAL average. It would defeat the entire point of doing videos and trying to explain why I think a specific anime deserves the score I give them if I simply took that scoring from MAL. I'm not stating or pretending that what I say is the objective fact. I'm making an observation about quality, mainly in regards to story, characters and visuals and then comparing how well a particular anime holds up to other shows and in none of these regards does GATE manage to get more than an average score aka half points, that being 5 with the extra one coming from the well executed militaria segments. 2) in the inn scene the three foreign teams are visually shocked to find operatives other than japanese present indicating that they did in fact not engage one an other prior to entering the yard. so It was the japanese fighting 3 separate infiltration forces off until they were told to stand down. Not a unified force but still one superior in numbers and roughly on par in training. On top of that, were it real, I doubt any halfway competent special operations unit would go in blind with not so much as a surveillance drone as eyes in the sky. 3. The US has lost the vast majority of mock engagements against the nordic countries, yes even against Finnish conscripts, some highlights of such defeats are a Swedish submarine sinking a fleet carrier in the middle of it's carrier task force and not being detected even after the fact and US Marines being defeated by a conscript for of Finnish jaegers during the NATO exercise early last year in Norway. Hence why I don't regard them as the most skilled soldiers to have ever lived. Naturally there are incredibly skilled combatants among their number like there are in any military and the US would have a huge numerical advantage should our allied nations ever actually go to war. But what I've witnessed from them is not some god like skill, it's perfectly competent operations like from any other foreign power that has trained here, nothing more, nothing less.

Damnit is just like big shooty things But in all seriousness, it is fun too watch, I am into Militaria and seeing those knights getting shredded by a Type-74 is just the most beautiful thing if ever saw bcs, most times something utterly overpowered like magic comes into our world, the police and Military is fucked but in this anime, just the turntables. Also yeah, I like big guns and hot anime girls, so it's perfect for me

@@whanngabrylsanoy721 at the same time, the anime portraits medival militaries as completely inept and clueless. yes you can shoot a knight, but when the knight gets into close quarters you are fucked. and the fantasy leaders dont seem to have basic strategic and tactical understanding, that was present in the medival period or even in roman times etc. so its the trope reversed but not in a good way, but kind of sloppy with the fantasy armies and soldiers just serving as passive/inept "NPCs" to prop up the JSDF. If the JSDF would have fought cardboard cutouts, there wouldnt have been much of a difference.

The only problem I have with this anime is that it was so damn slow and boring throughout the entire series, until the end where some action took place. It needs more action and military drama. The setting of the fantasy world especially needs more construction and presentation. I didn't like how the mages for instance want no involvement in the conflict when that could have even the odds against modern technology. And the harem girls in this anime are already OP as hell, with no other OP character that opposes their power, or at least none that make that much of a presence. The only reason why I watch this is just for the sake of seeing a modern military involvement with the fantasy world. Compared to not just anime but also western movies where some teenager is the only one saving the day even though a giant dragon attacks Washington DC, threatening the president, and the US military does nothing. Not even a regular police officer is present and everyone completely disregqrds the giant dragon's existence.

From what I could find out, it appears that the lengthy sections of politics and diplomatic solution searching is very much intentional as it aims to present the JSDF as a benign military presence and as one that is far superior, both morally and in it's ability to deal death and destruction. Which I'd suspect is also the reason why the mages aren't involved in the conflict. If you are trying to present the military as this kind but destructive entity that cannot be opposed, it wouldn't do to present a serious threat. Admittedly it does strike me as little odd that they didn't bring the most capable equipment in their arsenal to really flex since the whole thing is supposed to raise interest in choosing a military career amongst the Japanese populace. The reason they give for opting to use old hardware makes sense in the story but not as recruitment material.

@@addedcheese There could have been much more politics involved in the story as well. It would have been a lot more interesting if plenty of other kingdoms were involved rather than just be killed off in many failed waves of attacks. Not to mention the wasted potential of other races like orcs and goblins have kingdoms or clans that also have political involvement. It was interesting to see Rory, a Demigod be able to interact with the Japanese court. But imagine with there were other holy and unholy entities that can also have a political involvement. All I'm saying is the setting could use a lot of improvement. But sadly since this the anime's purpose is to get recruits in the JSDF, there wouldn't be that much dedication to the story and its world building.

But I still think it's entertaining enough, not great but deserving that 6/10 I gave it

Before I discovered the anime gate, I saw the anime outbreak company. Watching episodes 1 introduction, I was very intrigued with the concept. As I was finishing the anime, I was disappointed with how it turned out. Then I saw gate. And I loved it. Gate is what I was hoping outbreak company was going to be like.

This video came out 9 months ago so I'm a little late to the party. I gave the story 8/10 because some elements are average. But the freshness of the concepts compared to the general cliches of much anime boosted my score. Secondly, the moral arguments for having and using military force added to my rating. Yeah, I liked the battles and sweet women helped. But the arguments at the Diet were a high point for me. Some politicians second guessing and trying make personal gain from the unavoidable deaths. Japan "invaded" another country? The empire killed hundreds of Japanese civilians and enslaved many more. So, the government should have done what? Turn the heart of Tokyo into a front line?

I watched the anime first and loved but but I felt like something was missing and that was when I found out I had the manga on my laptop from a buddy who downloaded it for deployment and gave it to me. The manga is LEAGUES better than the anime, there's no holding back with the introduction having civilians getting got, it doesn't feel rushed to push the story to a season finale, it's just great. Seriously go read it!

24 split into 2 seasons, so far. The story isn't complete but there had been no word on further seasons

5:05 to be fair we can say that about Half of the Transformers movies or at least half of Michael bay movies. or in general half of Hollywoods movies the last 50+ years. 5:55 the big problem whit gate for me is tha it sort of miss a few of the (if you watch the Patlabor Wyvern section) where at the end of that section a full 1 min 15 sec expaning how the heck the whole thing happen. Gate did not (Like they never really explained how loobsided the JSDF fight at the Resort was). the one where JSDF spec ops whit night vision and silenced guns and the full spec. was defending against 3 diffrent nations "spec ops" that was equipped whit what ever random weapon they could get there hand on, airsoft gear Yes they had to run the op whit Airsoft gear no night vission and no recon or intel the Op was really badly run for the US a we got a opportunity get anything whit a gun on it... dont care that they dont have any equipment. and also we have no intel heck I think in the Manga there was a mention that one of the team had no clue on the layout of the spa they was going to (beyond a basic tourist brochure map). I think it even was mentioned that the US CIA agent was told to expect at most some police and security guard. not active JSDF soldiers or in this case JSDF spec ops.

I don’t know how anyone could hate this. It’s just one of those anime you sit down, watch, and enjoy the absurdity of the setting, modern military taking in a fantasy world.

This seems to me to be yet another example of an anime afraid to really commit to its premise. It sells itself as "fantasy world versus modern military firepower" but that isn't really what it delivers, not in any satisfactory way. We get some funny-at-first-but-quickly-boring scenes of medieval troops being massacred. The narrative keeps treating these poor primitive jerkoffs as if they are some sort of threat even though they clearly aren't. Then generic waifus with plot armor and absurd magic powers get introduced and surprise, they are on the JSDF's side so we can have another generic harem. Conflict is snuffed out and any threat the "evil empire" may have posed becomes even more of a joke. In the end they have to tag in America and other countries the author has a grudge against in order to have some kind of antagonist which defeats the entire purpose.

GATE is the show i watch with my brain turned off because i know its absolutely miserable japanese propaganda, but its still fun to watch the trash bag cycle its life. the sodding story and the underwhelming characters gets overshadowed and coated with how fun the medieval vs modern interactions and engagements are, even if its never actually used to experiment and play around the materials but instead just make it blind fun. this is all means bad but its like the room, its good because its bad.

GATE was such a disappointment, since it had a really fun concept/gimmick and had some great moments…but other than that it was dreadfully bland and boring.

i'ma be honest as a fantasy and military geek, GATE fails at actually portraying high fantasy vs technology Something like D&D vs Military arms, it's not at all that lopsided, magic missile would be valid nti-air, heat metal from druids would absolutely demolish tanks, this is essentially modern military vs low fantasy minus the few high fantasy example characters they have like Rory

as an ex tanker I can say that the heat metal depends entirely on what kind of a tank you are facing as a lot of modern MBT's are equipped with composite armour. But youa re right, if yu threw in the proper high fantasy magic it probably comes down to how real engagements work against a peer opponent, or at least something very similar. The one who sees and shoots first wins.

@@addedcheese Well upcasting is a thing and spell slots can be broken down into essentially spell points but a lot of modern armor probably has something to keep ammo cookoffs from being TOO Bad (I'm not big on the tank side, too too much) but I do think they could likely slag barrels and have the same effect as a incen down a barrel, the problem is getting close but there's also tools for that in some kits. Definitely still like absolutely NO contest between this level of fantasy and anything modern or even cowboy-era ngl lol

@@hochdieanarchie the ammo cookoff depends entirely on the vehicle in question but the vast majority of at least western designs only lose ammo with blowout panels and other protective measures usually keeping the vehicle and it's crew safe. I'd suspect that the whole contest comes down more to range. A modern MBT (again depending on the model) can slap you from 2-4km away even thorough cover if we are talking the tippy top of the models that have things like millimetre wave radar for target acquisition. But it's really just speculation with the vast discrepancy between both vehicles and magic systems out there

Heat metal , huh. How long does it take a druid to heat 44 tons of mixed metal and composite, while standing 30 meters away from the target? The magic missile suggestion has similar objections. That spell has a range of @ 40 meters and delivers about 1-2 points of structural damage. And the iron dragon will only be in range for a tiny fraction of a second while it's spitting bullets or dropping a bomb on the caster and their personal guard. But give Lelei la Lalena some time to work on the problem and modern military has some real trouble.

@@dreadogastusf3548 depending on the RPG magic system. In "The dark Eye" you got some insanely powerful spells, that only get limited in their usability due to mana consumption. As example "desintegratus powderdust" is a spell where the caster can desintegrate ANY non living substance in a cone going out from his hand with a range of casting value meters and casting value /2 width (meaning if you got the spell on 15, you render ANY non living material to dust in a 15x8m cone). You can apply modifiers like zone popping up in X hundret meters distance etc, wich makes the spell more difficult to cast. The catch is, that the average low to mid level mage would burn through 3/4 of his mana for this one spell. BUT you could cast it as a mage circle (prior spell casting of "unitatio spirit link" to form the casting circle) so that multiple casters can pool their mana and spell aptidudes, creating insane "super spells" like the Destructibo on 50+ casting value that can be cast 2-3 times in a row. Its always interesting to see that D&D does not cover such stuff
