When my oldest one was little I would pay her $1 to read a book and write a book report. Sometimes, she would read 10 books so she could earn $10. I would read her book reports and we would discuss the book. Both of my daughters are in their 20s now and they love books.
Our community or parents didn't have to compete with this level of misinformation . TV in the 70s was parents fear . I believe further from plantation more we forget .
We as Black people need to remember and pass to the next generation that the ACT of READING is OUR revolutionary weapon used by our great ancestor and must be used, adopted, passed on, reloaded, and used by EVERY Black person in this criminal enterprise! We need to teach and remind our people what the punishment was for anyone caught doing it or helping our people doing it! Asé 🙌🏽🙏🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much for that comment about being your full self in white spaces. I had that problem in the 1980s and immediately understood the need for self-employment cause I just couldn't! St. Sya Academy is approaching year 28! Dr. Noni
The local library was part of our lives for as long as I can remember. And the elementary school book fairs! I used to LOVE it!!!! I is a mountain to climb to get back to anything that resembles these things.
Are there venues that take book donations? I have college and university books from HBCU and other books need to downsize at this point. In NY-NJ-CT area.
Thanks once again for this amazing topic Dr.Carr professor K.Hunter. One key to reading is finding something that you like. My mother used to tell me don't never let no one stop you from learning. Knowledge is power when you used it right. We are the only people forbidden to read there was a reason why to keep us in a state of oppression. Education is a art not a science some learn by looking some by hearing some by hands on. I've learnt this when I'm reading I'm running free. Love you guys keep on keeping on. Sankofor 🌍
Not changing the subject. Thank you Doc. Carr for mentioning the Home Going Service of Rev Adam. That was one touching celebration. Shout out to Rev. WRIGHT❤
Thank you again Professor Hunter and Dr.Carr. Today’s session was much needed for me. At the beginning of the week , I was so emotional exhausted with our black paid politicians and those Black people in Chicago threatening to overthrow the Democratic Black vote and semi professing to join the Republican Party with their vote. Again this was very therapeutic for me today. Again THANK YOU SO MUCH. I pray that you two are PROTECTED and UNHARMED. You two are SPECIAL. I love and respect what you two put out EVERY DAMN SATURDAY. I watch live at 9am, and again at Noon. I’m BLACK DYSLEXIC. Needed you twice to get the message.
Statement:Illegal Migrants some with criminal backgrounds moving into melonated neighborhoods, getting housing ,money ,while citizens veterans are homeless and no funds allocated to them.. Jobs are scarce that can provide a decent living and u allow them to come here..??No melonated men on construction sites...No bank loans for small businesses or home loans family's..Food desserts in melonated communities...All this happening right now...Inflation and war...money being allocated to foreigners instead to melonated communities that's owed . Reparations..No need to go further thats a plate full.Happening right now..Not leaning to either side but Trump has pardoned melonated people, he's given out small business loans to melonated people, he has a relationship with well known melonated people. He once said That "Melonated people built this country from its inception "Anyone else speak those words????Get out of the robotic thinking and traditional nonsense and ask the real relevant questions fir both sides.... What your witnessing r melonated folk r no longer supporting a ideology that doest address or respect their interest or needs.Until real talking points take place...U can go thanking Carr and Hunter but isn't it peculiar or strange that they don't have a relationship or connection with The scholar Dr. Claude Anderson,or speak of our Great Sister Dr.Frances Cress Welising..The great insight and knowledge they've given us....Open your mind and start to look at what's real....
Another great session with you and Dr.Carr. Growing in the Bronx, we had community. I had teachers in my school PS 69 that I will never forget. That really impacted my life. As well as Jr. high teacher that gave a damn. And now as a parent of adult children, and a new grandchild. This topic today really resonated with me. I know about the candy store owners that look after us. And the corner store owners that knew the whole neighborhood. We had community.
Best analysis I’ve seen on the Venezuela-Guyana issue (that has been since resolved by diplomacy) can be found in an article on Black Agenda Report by Dr Tamanisha John titled “Guyana and Venezuela: The Crisis of Imperialism Currently Unfolding on South America's Caribbean Coast”
Professor Hunter and Dr.Carr. Yes, kids need to put down the phones. I think some times ago, maybe 6 week ago, I think the city of Richmond, Va. School board had made the decision that the children will have to give up there during class hours ,upon notifying the parents they have been meet with push back. I read an article on American Fiction. I was impressed. Yes thank you for explaining the reparation issue to me. Happy Holiday Days and Happy New Year.
A lot of the pushback is unfortunately because of school shootings. They've read too many stories of children calling or texting their parents before being killed. 😔 If schools were safe, parents would be more comfortable with their children not having access to a device.
I work on an assembly line that frequently stops running. My appetite for reading grew from listening to these conversations. I've read 28 books "at work" since July.
Being your full self ....The best version is what the strive is for....Connecting with great minds is also apart of discovering your true potential. Its a prerequisite......Showing your followers the effort has been made to engage with them.......Especially when u know they're out there and r doing good things.....Cant hold dialogue and dont mention their names....Your complaining but unwilling to take the necessary steps to reach out to these great individuals.....Belief is all it takes.....Dr.Claude Anderson.....Professor Kaba Kamene......
I just sent a note to my daughter saying this same sentiment. All she has to do is be herself. I told her that was the major spiritual lesson I've learned at this level.
Around the 10 minute mark when she was talking about people not reading... I suddenly felt the need to ask Prof Hunter if she needed a few ICE CUBEs to cool her tea.
My kids, Son 9 & Daughter 7 still have Book Fairs in NC. They both love to read and play on their devices. My oldest is 26, so I know how things have changed, but all 6 of my kids do both well. I have always modeled doing both.
I'm commenting late on this one, but still wanted to. I watched last week but just getting around to commenting. A Book Mobile is a wonderful idea, and one for ADULTS TOO-yesssss! We all need to get back to the books, especially the kids-young adults. I think Dr. Carr himself is the perfect inspiration for our youth to read more. He inspires us adults, and I'm sure he can do the same for the children. He brings words to life right off the pages and into our imagination, whenever he reads aloud to us.
Im not sure a piecemeal approach to reparations is a good thing. Im not keen on it anyway. Should be a national reparations bill. “Salvation for a race, nation or class must come from within. Freedom is never granted; it is won. Justice is never given; it is exacted.” “In every truth, the beneficiaries of a system cannot be expected to destroy it.” “At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can’t take anything, you won’t get anything, and if you can’t hold anything, you won’t keep anything. And you can’t take anything without organization.” A. Philip Randolph We've got to have AGRESSIVE MASS DEMONSTRATIONS with MILLIONS of our people. We have to shut down D.C. and every other major city for at least a day SO THEY CANT IGNORE IT. There must also be discipline so the criminal opportunists dont destroy the focus. What they're doing in NY and CA is nice, but I don't see it going anywhere.
TEACH/PREACH, Prof. Hunter and Dr. Carr!!👏🏾👏🏾 We're listening and in turn, we're teaching and preaching just like you're sharing. Thanks, again, for this space for us/ours to congregate and elucidate Blessings!!🙏🏾🖤💯
I love when Dr. Carr talks about WI, good or bad, because being from here most of my life, whether I wanted to be or not, he has always not only said it exactly how it is as if he himself was raised here, but also he motivates it with his words so that it always feels like there is a pathway...I think that is the type of mindset that gets others who have even the most minimal bit of extreamism or brainwashing left within them, to deconstruct by walking right out of a false narrative, minus ANY sence of fear or pressure, only confidence. Thank you Dr. Carr and fam❤
You need to have some of the same conversation and energy directed at people of African descent from other places because their is a contingency who gets on this white man's internet talking greasy.
I love to read, however I like audiobooks better since I don't have much downtime to read a book. I'm reading at least 2 books a week. I call it-reading with my ears. Does that count?
Wow! You'll brought back some memories when you mentioned Swedish fish and quarter waters. I agree they changed the recipe the Swedish fish. Indeed quarter waters are terrible. 😂
“It’s time for Black people to stop playing the separating game of geography, of where the slave ship put us down. We must concentrate on where the slave ship picked us up.” - John Henrik Clarke
American Fiction, based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett The Color Purple Those are the only two I remember, not sure if other movies were discussed.
IMDb writes that American Fiction was released on December 15th... The casting is stellar, but this is the first I've heard of this movie!! That's not right!
70s my sister and I caught the Chauncey Street j train to Jamaica ave last stop then different buses she to I.S. 8 and me to Duke Ellington Elementary PS 140 . Year before i broke my arm steeling ten cent icys , Brooklyn sidewalks before gentrification was lopsided . But the Bodega owner carried me to my grandmother door never speaking English to me for a full brooklyn block i , grandma rub wholly water (olive oil) and he prayed until nit until uncle demanded i go to hospital . Corner Bodegas was connected to community .
I love these conversations around reading. As a parent of young person with Dyslexia, I would like to create space to acknowledge those children who may love to read and also need extra support to navigate their reading/ learning process. To be clear people with Dyslexia can and will read, however, they will need help. Some of that help can come from devices. At the same time, one of the ways reading was encouraged included having a range of books available on below and above grade level. So many books are available through many of the Friends of Library book sales. Great prices! I always found books about our people for myself and the children.
Reading is one thing, but critique is another. I'm all for reading, but we have to teach kids to read with a critical eye. Who is the author? What function does this text serve? What rhetorical devices does the author use to make their point? And that's before we even dive into the subject matter. Reading is fundamental, but literacy is a gift.
You are 💯 right Dr. Carr black people really needs to talk about senceble gun use. No gangster or prankster crap. An order like the Decons of Defense order. You should have a show on Black Defense fortifying black areas against attacks.
The United States is a "world nation" whereas it is the only country in world with representatives from "every" nation in the world. There is no other country that can come close to this type of global representation. All the more reason, why the rhetoric around immigration is so disheartening.
i agree with dr. carr, i want a world where the young man doesn't have to worry'bout where he sleeps at night 'cause he's tryin to figure it out and there's no one to help him and the words are flowin....been there...just had family.
How will the removal of trump affect the billionaires and their racist militias path toward full power? What does it look like if a smarter person fills the void?
Professor Hunter you mocked the first generation of firsts in the 1950s and 60s who [it seemed] were required to speak with smooth measured tones in order to hold that spot and the promise of maintaining the spot for the future. It was a different time.
Reading along with audible or speechify can assist. More dynamic interactive staged readings… And consistently reminding young people that the answer to their situation is between the pages. I read quite a bit - and I too am distracted.
I can tell from your pronunciation of Diop that you studied at Temple. Please do an analysis of the war in Sudan and the Arab nations that are financing the carnage.
Happy Winter Solstice and Salute to 👑Professor Hunter,❤️🔥 (i didn't put Dr. 😅I remembered) , and Dr Carr 👑 this was so so good ❤️🔥 we as a people have all the modes. 💯🔥
