Dr. Greg Carr breaks down the curriculum questions (social structure, governance structure, ways of knowing, etc.) through the lens of the Olympics. There is also a brief history of Costa Rica's role in Pan Africanism, Marcus Garvey, Harry Belafonte and Dr. Carr does his best rendition on Louis Armstrong in celebration of his birthday (Aug. 4th). And #YOUSHOULDKNOW #BobMoses #Olympics #CostaRica #InClasswithCarr

I've always loved metaphor in song lyrics I never realized how metaphor could make learning so much more rich. Probably because I didn't have many black teachers. But he's given us alot. I never recognized the Garvey movement and the United Fruit company rivalry and it makes so much sense when looking at the families responsible for the assassination in Haiti, and the tension in Cuba. It ties together how the US works through proxy. This knowledge was so needed.

"The question of why social structure first...These conceptual categories are designed for us to ask better questions, realizing that we may never come to a consensus on what the best answers are...The point of entry is the world we live in. The world we live in is the social structure...the social structure comes first bc it is what we live in." - Prof Carr. "We can't allow for the social structure to allow us to forget who we are." - Prof Hunter. Before the "front porch conversation" can become that "deeper structural conversation", a whole lot of uncomfortable conversations will have to take place.

Dr, Carr's breakdown of vaccine hesitancy within the black community is golden!! If there is any hope of convincing people to take the vaccine, it must begin from a position of mutual respect. The condescending, patronizing tone used by so many "experts" only pushes people further into their corners.
@candiyoung7027
@candiyoung7027 3 года назад
I respect your opinion, but I'm done arguing. When I worked with kids, I told them you'd better get up and move with me if ever you see my face and I'm saying there's a fire. Same thing in this instance. Melanin-challenged folk traipsed into neighborhoods they normally wouldn't be caught dead in to get the vaccine. I now throw my hands up and say "you know best".

It's not an "argument" to Dr. Carr's point. It's an appeal to someone's humanity and regard for public safety. Still, unfortunately, not trusting government officials, regardless of country, when it comes to public health has it's logical roots. Many of the non-vaccinated are not stupid, even when they may not present themselves as well-informed. You can't read books like Bad Blood, Medical Apartheid, The Isis Papers, A Higher Form of Killing, Vaccines Are Dangerous, War Against Children of Color, The Anglo-American Biomedical Antecedents to Nazi Crimes, Against Their Will, Breeding Bettter Vermonters, decades of UNESCO documents on health disparities and birth rates, and many other texts on experimentation and medical genocide, and think people "should" just line up for the vaccine. Calling people "assholes" (Charles Barkley) for not getting vaccinated reflects a high degree of historical illiteracy. The eugenics movement (which never ended because they have international conferences every year) alone is enough to make someone hesitate. Some anti-vaxers may see this as a conspiracy, but not just against global Black people. So trying to convince Black people that they should take the vaccine because "smart white people are taking it" flies in the face of everything we learn in these spaces about the social and governing structure. Is taking the vaccine a resaonable decision...yes!!! Is not taking the vaccine a logical decision...yes! It's terrible that lives are on the line as we work this out, because this virus is a parasite on humanity. Still multiple things can be true. This virus could be a deliberate weapon used against the majority of the world's economically bottom tier (I mean, aren't the stockpiles of nuclear weapons waiting to be launched at the push of a button always on the verge of being the same thing, so it's not far fetched). While simultaneously, the various vaccines developed against COVID-19 and all current variants are the most life-saving tools to fight against it. While also, the impact of either contracting COVID or being vaccinated against may cause both short and/or long term effects that we are uncertain of in a minority (not insignificant) portion of the world's population, thus causing people to make reasonable, personal decisions that they feel are in their best interest. I know we want everyone to be vaccinated, but not doing it is not always a referendum on someone's ability to process or reason. In many cases, quite the opposite. Even the ones who make this a political issue have some truth behind what their saying. Dave Chappelle said the worst thing to call someone is crazy, because it's dismissive. I mean, was it reasonable or logical that as soon as many people got vaccinated, they wanted to take their masks off??? The CDC, regardless of their flip-flopping, told us in January that the vaccines wouldn't prevent you from getting COVID, and that you could pass it on to both vaccinated and non-vaccinated still. People didn't care, they did what was best for them individually, not the public interest. Now, despite people being told to put back on their masks, vaccinated people are not all doing it. So why is not getting vaccinated at all make other people seem less of a team player?
@greenbyrd3665
@greenbyrd3665 3 года назад
@@ydzi7537 Excellent points. To answer your last question, contrary to the current drum beat of the experts, I do not see those who choose not to get vaccinated as less of a team player; as long as they are taking other measures to mitigate the spread (masking, social distancing and hand washing). Vaccinated or not, it just makes sense that everyone should be doing this.
@ydzi7537
@ydzi7537 3 года назад

Wow, Dr Carr blew my mind when he started talking about Costa Rica. My maternal grandfather was born in Puerto Limon Costa Rica, then my mother's born in Bocas del Toro Panamá. I Always questioning my uncle's about our origins cause I really wanna know what's part of Africa our family are related to, but unfortunately they don't know that much. Thanks you Dr Carr and Professor Hunter for all this knowledge. I'm willing to learn every day with you both. Blessings. 😊😘

Professor Hunter I am so glad you pointed that out about the women and men and how that has been used to separate us more. My great grandmother quote was this to my Aunts “ when I was carrying you and I didn’t know if you were a little girl or little boy all I knew as you were black”. Thank you and Dr carr for in your direction, dedication and working in your destiny. Very insightful and this show really speaks to the feelings I have had for the sports world.

I am so grateful for this level of thoughtful conversation. These are things we need as a people to help us challenge our mental brainwashing that has been put on us. Dr. Carr & Professor Hunter you are freeing us daily by providing us this intellectual portal to begin to break the chains that have bound us. Thank you for allowing us to be on your journey!

@@KarenHunterShow Here's the context A Black woman led the Android App Dev team for Clubhouse ($4B valuation)...certainly a measure of Equality was demonstrated in her hiring...But Garvey would have declined that form of Equality in favor of creating our own App...especially given the size of the Nigerian market...JS

@@roqstone3752 is she getting a healthy piece of that $4B valuation? does that woman have ownership in the app? and what's her name? I'd love to chat with her.
