Nile Rodgers joins Talks at Google to talk about his career, FOLD Festival and "The Hitmaker".
About Nile Rodgers:
Among music legends, Nile Rodgers is truly exceptional. He amplifies his legacy as a Grammy-winning composer, producer, arranger, and guitarist by constantly traversing new musical terrain and successfully expanding the boundaries of popular music. As the co-founder of CHIC, Rodgers pioneered a musical language that sparked the advent of hip-hop with "Good Times," distinguished CHIC as the "most sampled band in history" (The Guardian, 2011), won CHIC nine Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, and generated groundbreaking pop hits like "Le Freak," which was inducted into the 2015 Grammy Hall of Fame. His career-defining productions for David Bowie (Let's Dance), Madonna (Like A Virgin), Diana Ross (diana), and Sister Sledge (We Are Family), plus his work with artists like Duran Duran, INXS, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Steve Winwood, Peter Gabriel, The B-52s, and Michael Jackson, have sold over 200 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide while his innovative, trendsetting collaborations with Daft Punk, Avicii, Disclosure, and Sam Smith reflect the vanguard of contemporary music. His FOLD Festival (foldfestival.com/) is currently in its second year on Long Island and is debuting in London for the very first time.
In addition to headlining the world's most prestigious venues, Rodgers' many endeavors include his roles as Chairman and Founder of the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF), serving on the NARAS Board of Governors, giving keynote speeches at events for noted media companies like FremantleMedia as well as conferences like Google Zeitgeist and the International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza, scoring music for blockbuster films, writing the critically acclaimed autobiography Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny (2011), and distributing soundtracks for popular AAA video games via his national distribution company and record label Sumthing Distribution and Sumthing Else Music Works. "The full scope of Nile Rodgers' career is still hard to fathom, and it's not just ongoing, it's in overdrive," Rolling Stone recently remarked, naming Rodgers one of "the 50 Most Important People in EDM" (2014). Indeed, Rodgers' unrivaled track record is a mere glimpse of what's yet to come.

I just saw Nile at the Byron Bay Blues Fest and he blew me, my wife and daughter off the charts. Such a humble, honest vibe from the man, but with energy flowing to the audience with waves of his passion and joy of playing these songs. We were so lucky to be on the rails and were mere metres away from him and his funky Chic crew. He mentioned the press called them a "covers band" and then reminded the crowd about a few artists and tunes he'd penned and/ or arranged, and we're talking a only few. Thank you Nile and your influence on our world of sound, in the past, present and future. and as a musician/ educator I will pass on your legacy. Much love.

Thank you for running this...I have been a serous Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards fan since I was a 13 year old in '77 who saved up my paper route money to buy the 1st Chic album...I was teased back then on how much of a fan I was of all of their music...I followed them to the other artists that they both produced into my early 20's...I have never met Nile & pray that I get a chance to since I can't meet Tony Thompson & Bernard Edwards (I'd love to meet Alfa Anderson & Luci Martin also)...great venue & thanks again.

Wow, very similar to myself. I was 14 in the 9th grade towards the end of 1977. At that time, I liked Chic's first single "Dance, Dance, Dance", but I had no idea how special they were until a couple of months into 1978 when I heard "Everybody Dance". Then in the summer I heard their production on Norma Jean Wright's " Can't wait till Saturday".... I've been a life long fan since...

The more he talks the more i'm blown away. I recognized Nile from different pictures/videos but this is the first time I've actually looked into who he is. To think i'm only watching this because I got a turntable, found a copy of The Chic Organization going cheap on ebay, recognized the name "Chic" and decided to look up "who this Nile guy is". His repertoire is on another level! This man is responsible for the funkiest and most uplifting funk/disco music I've heard in my life that I didn't even know he was a part of creating.

carl Benson you and I must be around the same age, I am now 55 and I used to do the same thing. I would buy sweatshirts and have the word chic ironed on them. I even learned how to play the bass like my hero bernard, got a group together and dressed like chic. Even though i never met them or got the chance to see them in concert, They were very instrumental in My teenage years and kept me out of trouble to the point my friends would call me weird because I did not want to hang out with them, just play chic music. they would walk past me and say hey sharon....chic chic and start laughing. yeah I know I was on a mission but if I had it to do all over again, i wouldnt change a thing. Thanks for your comments my brother in chic.🎶🎶🎶

He had been telling his band a story about how no one showed up to the chic concert in Oakland in the 70s because EWF was in town. My father actually worked as a rodee for that show and told me the same story. When I met his band and told them, they were in total shock that it was true. Nile has no reason to lie, he’s a genuine person.
