Reacting to the recent online backlash against Cassandra Bankson regarding her support of The Inkey List Succinic Acid Blemish Treatment and Naturium
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin. In todays video we are taking a break from the usual content I post here and I wanted to share with you my thoughts on Cassandra Bankson and the recent online reaction she has been getting as a result of her support for Susan Yara and her brand Naturium, her critique of Dr Dray and her skincare routine and he ongoing promotion of The Inkey List Succinic Acid Blemish Treatment.
I have said in the past that I never think online bullying is ok and there is a fine line between calling people out online and is being bullying. I watched Cassandra Banksons Clearing The Air video and it is clear that there is more than just calling out happening.
I would recommend everyone check out Cassandras video which is linked below in order to formulate their own opinions and I would welcome you to share them in the comments section in a respectful and appropriate manner.
Clearing The Air: • Clearing The Air...
I believe there is a lot I want to reflect on from this and my own experience and behaviour online and I think we can all learn and grow and approach our online discussions and interactions with more grace and positivity. I am in no way against calling out when it needs to be done but there is a means of doing this which does not need to be attack and berate and I will certainly be reflecting on this in the coming months.
Wherever you are in the world I hope you are keeping safe and well and I look forward to seeing you in the next video
xx

I stopped watching her about a year ago. I found her method of being “judgey” about other RU-vid creators off putting. The last video I watched she rolled her eyes while talking about the creator and it was just a negative feeling I had- this was a video about Dr Dray. I would never nor have I ever made a comment on her videos or anyone else’s. I just think unfollow is the right thing to do.

Cassandra's video had me thinking 2 things: 1. It was wholly unnecessary for her to apologize. She is always very considerate with her words and is an inclusive, respectful, beautiful butterfly. 2. I realized how much I need to change in regards to comments in general and responding to other people's comments. I have strong opinions and my comments were coming off rude and her video really opened my eyes to that. So I'll be making that change on my end and be more considerate before I post a comment. Very late to the party but I feel like giving my two cents anyways. While I do think the drama is very overblown, I would disagree with Cassandra being thoughtful and respectful with her words (at least all of the time anyways). Part of the drama was directly BECAUSE she came across as insensitive, rude, and privileged in a couple situations when criticizing others skincare routines. I also think the whole “react” trend of skincare content was quite toxic. Giving advice and recommendations is one thing, criticizing others for using what they like and what works for them is another. And so unnecessary. If someone is spreading misinformation that needs to be corrected or something like that (such as Bella Thorne’s routine), then sure some gentle criticism can be made. But rolling your eyes, making faces, and being snarky just bc someone uses a product you personally don’t like is childish. Just my thoughts.
@tojin

I really like Cassandra for her courage. For example many skincare influencers (like Hyr...nvm) who were close to Susan suddenly became completely silence about Susan or her brand likely because they fear their reputation will be impacted or care too much about politics whereas Cassandra went on to share her thoughts of Susan's products, which I thought is what we all want skincare influencers to do. Kudos to Cassandra for that!

Honestly getting such internalized misogyny vibes from all this hate to female creators. I am not really the type to criticise much but I think there are definitely issues with some of the things Cassandra says, as a subscriber who watches most of her videos. I tend to favour more highly informed content creators or alternatively people who make short reviews about anecdotal experience with products and don't try to talk science much. I totally get how creators talking negatively about their own appearance can be damaging to viewers. Reminds me of when Hyram didn't do skincare for a week or something and exaggerated his disgust about having sebaceous filaments. Personally, I think her reasoning for being comfortable with supporting Naturium is dreadful. Mainly because she didn't give a reason, yes that will definitely weaken your argument

Thank you, Rob, for making this video and showing your support for a fellow creator! The amount of abuse people get online for the most minor things is appalling. And the intensity and kind of abuse that women receive in particular is even more outrageous, misogyny really is still thriving! I also don't watch Cassandra's content super regularly, but I do every now and then as I appreciate her perspective and experience (as an individual and professional). I'm a bit put off by how dramatic she can get sometimes, but as you said, this might be very much intentional or just who she is and she's a RU-vidr so entertainment is her job. No one will watch a channel where every statement made will be as bland as possible. I don't understand why disagreeing with someone (on skincare!) or not liking their style of videos or aesthetic leads to expressing hate, though. I disagree with you rather frequently, for instance, and yet I still have the utmost respect and love for you as a creator AND person. It's saddening that this seems to be an impossibility for so many other people... Hope you're doing well and sending love!

PLEASE please read this: For me personally, I thought the apology was necessary and now I feel comfortable trusting her. I dont defend or condone any hate she's received. However, I had a hard time trusting her for the same reasons as other people: the Dr Dray thing and Naturium especially. Those didn't give off the strongest first impressions for a new viewer like me. But cassandra addressed all this and more in her apology video. Now, I truly do trust her and see her as someone who learns from her mistakes. She really wasn't being transparent with the naturium thing, so I'm glad she finally did. So i do feel this video was necessary to make everyone, including myself, see that.

I was unaware she was getting massive amounts of hate. Criticism, yes -- that will ways be around. I think people, like with anything with a fanbase, get a bit excessive and self-righteous and think because they watch a few videos, they are experts, even though they've never stepped foot into a college classroom and have never studied the topic at hand. Cassandra is an esthetician, a professional but not a flawless expert. She is also a RU-vidr who makes infotainment content, and at least she says she does not know more than a full-blown dermatologist (even though, honestly, she sometimes indirectly implies that is the case). I don't know why random commenters think they or any non-doctor knows more than licensed professionals. Instead of calling out and critiquing every "mistake" Cassandra or other RU-vidrs/commentators make, maybe they should go speak to an actual dermatologist first to get the full, factual story. Basically, factual corrections are always fine, but ego-shattering vitriol is not. I'm only a super-casual occasional watcher of Cassandra's, but no one needs to be torn apart and harassed because they may share a different point of view.

I think this message is so important. I've been seeing so much judgement and hate in the skincare community, especially people emphasizing what's "wrong" and "right" when it comes to what brands to trust, what products to use, what people to watch. I'm sick of people saying stuff like "You can only trust dermatologists" (as someone who had a BAD experience with a dermatologist, I can assure you they are not all 100% infallible) or "Using fragrance is wrong" (even for people who have no sensitivities). The best thing about the skincare community has always been the idea that everyone's skin is different, so brands, products, ingredients, and when influencers will match different people. We should be supporting each other, because aren't we all just trying to improve our skin and gain confidence? Skincare should be self-care, not stress.

P.S. Cassandra is one of those skinfluencers that I'm not subscribed to -- I watch her videos infrequently but her content/tone doesn't click with me. Same with Dr. Dray. And I think that's ok -- we shouldn't all be required to only watch and agree with the same people. But even I've received hate online just for saying that I respect but am not a huge fan of them. Simply saying that they're not my favorite channel somehow equaled me having a personal vendetta against them... I don't get it.

Amen Rob!! I watched that video and it made me uncomfortable that she had to address certain things. I personally left a comment saying that if her opinions were not appreciated, then don’t watch. I also received an angry comment back about the Naturium situation. Again, as I stated no one is perfect and that we can all agree to disagree on some things. I really felt horrible when she was apologizing for how she described her own acne. That’s her truth and if she felt it was horrific or whatever, that’s her truth and I appreciate her honest reaction!! Just felt that some of the cancel culture goes too far in blaming any individual perceived opinion as a personal affront /slight to someone on there soapbox mission.

To a high degree I agree with what you've covered in this video and it's great to see this being spoken about 🌟 - online bullying should not be a thing. That being said, I do not follow Cassandra, I just don't vibe with her and sometimes it feels fake whenever I try to give the videos another chance. I do however think that she was right to apologise especially for the reaction to Dr Dray (I am vegetarian myself and cruelty free but I would never seek to impart that on others and I think it's one of the reasons people don't like vegans and as a result don't want to follow that lifestyle, which is sad) and for the words against her past self with acne.

I watched the video and found nothing she had to apologise for. The parts where she explained why she can't talk about everything she knows etc. were fine, I personally find creators (and people in real life!) shouldn't tease information they can't deliver in a reasonable time frame; I believe in "talk about it or don't, don't half-talk and then be surprised when people complain". I like this video but Cassandra has loads of misinformation in past videos, especially bashing InnBeauty and staying silent on Naturium- her video was brave and commendable, but long overdue, since the damage was done. She prides herself on doing research (and excels 99% of the time), but fails to look up even the most basic details before bashing things as what happened with the InnBeauty video and many others. While being a model before? tired of these labels

No one should be treated like that. To be honest, people (not a good one of course) take extra freedom behind the screen and it is not acceptable. Also when you are creating contents, you have to be careful as it has to be interpreted in a bad way in order to limit bad people to take the advantage for abuse. That's the problem with internet. You make ONE mistake, One and people will come at you brandishing pitchforks. It's like they haven't made a mistake in their entire lives. As long as it's an honest mistake give the person a chance to correct themselves. After all, to err is human. That is one of the main reason I like your channel and you as a person. You are so calm, composed and respectful. Which is ironic because brash and insensitive is my default mode 😂. I for one can't stay calm when I know that a person is doing something with malicious intent unlike you and have to call them out. I respect you for that, which again is ironic because that's totally against everything I beleive in 😂😂. But then again you are such a sweet and genuinely nice person. Live long and prosper 🖖🏽.

👏👏👏👏👏👏 Great approach. My parents always were saying “if you don’t have something nice to say to someone don’t say anything”. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have an opinion or you can’t express it but you always have to respect other people. At these times people are reacting like they belong to a cult and they hate everyone else that have another opinion from the cults leader. If I wanted something like that, I’d go to join a religion or political group and not see RU-vid videos especially about skin care.😤 People have to calm down.🙁

The way she said she will try to improve language when looking back at her acne is just awesome cause that kinda makes people who still are o theses stages to feel uncomfortable. The main problem I see is that people are always trying to add drama in every little situation. The Dr Dray situation was just stupid cause Cassandra is such a Dray fan too 🙄

I've never watched Cassandra's earlier videos so I can't speak on how she helped the "acne community". I did however click on one of her recent videos and my first gut reaction was "what a b@#$". I merely stopped the video and clicked on "don't recommend this channel". That being said.....if her content is disrespectful and judgmental, that's the kind of audience she is going to attract. Is it fair that she got hated on and bullied....ABSOLUTELY NOT...NO ONE deserves that. Rob your audience is obviously "mature minded" and classy.....that's because your content directly reflects that! Your videos are informative, and you've got class!!!!!

I watched Cassandras video and I commented she had NOTHING to apologize for. I will never, ever understand why people feel the need to leave nasty bullying comments here, on Instagram or anywhere. It’s fine to disagree and it’s fine to say so, but why the anger and aggression? I also saw the video with dr dray where she called out the cruelty free stuff. I thought “woah calm down girl, that’s not a priority for everyone.” But that’s just it, I THOUGHT it and when the video was done I went about my business. For me, it’s no different than if you were watching a tv show and you didn’t like it - you switch it off. You don’t write an email to the tv station full of hate and venom. If you went to a cinema and you didn’t like the film at worst you would leave a bad review saying you didn’t like it - you wouldn’t tell everyone isn’t the film to kill the selves but here it’s ok? If these trolls were discussing these things with Cassandra or anyone in person would they say those things to their face? I think not. It’s just a way for nasty people to be nasty. Sometimes when I read comments I find myself literally shaking with anger at the things I read and I have to force myself to not get involved. It’s what they want. So I take the time to leave positive comments or take part in discussions as I want to support the channels I like and that way they continue to make content I will watch and I know how much time goes into creating. But I would never say anything like what I see in the comments online to ANYONE. EVER. At the very least, because I have manners.
