💯 agree. I have 900-1000 cds since early 1980’s. Once I joined iTunes 2005ish I discovered hundreds of other songs and 100+ new artists I’d never really knew. Then Spotify in 2017/18 and add another 100+ artists and hundreds of new songs. I’m so glad I have the access.
The problem with having such an ease of discovering new music is that it creates such a short attention span in the listener because they're always hunting for something new, and abandoning the music they already have because something else grabbed their attention. There's tons of music all competing for your attention, and there's not enough time to give it all the attention it deserves. Gone are the days when you'd get an album and you'd sit with it and just digest the hell out of it. I really miss those days, that's why I'm tapping out of music collecting. There's always going to be too much music, and I feel done with trying to keep up with it.

I grew up purchasing eight tracks cassettes records and CD’s but these days with work and parenting , I can’t imagine pulling a cd or cds from my collection while on the go and then switching it out ect .. it’s so much easier to stream while chillin at home or in the car .. I have a huge collection of all my favorite albums from many genres on Spotify and old iTunes ripped and burnt from my cd collection i I keep both collections on shuffle 24-7 .. every so often I may listen to an album on Spotify or Amazon in its entirety … I really love effortless convenience of streaming
I’ve always been a proponent of buying physical copies. Support the bands etc. Until my job started to let us wear earbuds at work. Now I’m on Spotify literally 7.5 hours a day. Music, podcasts, audio books. It is fantastic to pass the time of a boring workday. I still buy the occasional cd but my usage has completely flipped.
I agree with all your points. Very well thought out. I also stream sometimes but own alot, purchase, and listen to vinyl. Also go to concerts when I can. I see nothing wrong with streaming music, it has many benefits. The services should however pay more to the artists. Thanks for the video, enjoy your channel.
I’m 58 I’m on Spotify, still buy cds from bands I really like, but yes Spotify needs to pay artists more!!! I would think all streaming companies don’t pay artists enough
Hi John Great subject i grew up with Records Tapes Cds &DVDs CDs became my love i have about 2,700 or so cds & about 4,000 dvds this year my sons put me on to spotifi and i love it , so much music and getting close to retirement as im 62 years old its so good, as here in Australia the cd is about $25 to $35 per cd Box sets are around $100 to $ 135 so its expensive for me so now with spotifi i can listen to new music without paying that money and still enjoy my music the last 2 CDs i bought were the New Accept & Kerry King which cost me $60 i also wanted to buy the Frank Zappa live at the Whiskey but i saw it on spotifi and decided to spend $65 on the cd and i still listen to it when i want so im all for streaming i thought i would never in my life say that great video John i enjoy your videos very much
I realised I had about 2000 movies and one day it felt like what's the point? Some of them I watched once in the last 20 years and I realised I'm never going to have time to watch all of these. So some I sold, some I threw in the garbage. I'm down to about 1000 now but the goal is the get them in my two 400 dvd binders.
Hi John. I’ll start by saying I love your channel and the AC/DC podcast with Martin Popoff. I grew up on vinyl, CDs and cassettes, but I stream on Spotify these days. I agree it’s a sign of the times and it’s convenient. I still pickup vinyl and love playing my vinyl. CDs I play very occasionally. Great video.
The problem is that music has Lost its value because of streaming. Music is not as important as before because of streaming. It is a fact. Sad but true.

By the way, I watch almost ALL the vídeos on your Channel and your Channel and insights are great Lair, but I disagree about streaming. It was the end of love of music for the new generations. Everything that IS easy to get Lost its value imediately. Like everything Else in life.

I do agree that the amount of music out there at our fingertips causes people to not pay as much attention. I have watched channel for quite a while you are very opened minded and always see both sides i get what pardo was saying but you have good point me it's the convenience but i have cassetts and vynils cds serious cost money so i use Spotify or Pandora in the car or house there's still lots of radio stations i know ads but keeps it going it's why i have cassetts cds i can sit outside listen to them on a good boombox the portability i agree on your points hated walking with cd portable would skip
I definitely used streaming to rediscover bands I already knew, but had lost touch with… I was able to go down several rabbit holes and expand my music library - but I also have bought the CDs that I really liked, so I do have them on hard copy. I have a lot more on my iPhone - I have a whole music library in my hand. I have discovered new bands as well, but more often it’s my comfort bands that I enjoy listening to.
Streaming is just very convenient. So for example, I work at home and I like to listen to music when I'm working. I have some records so I can put on a record, but the thing is I need to get up out of my seat and walk over to the record player every 20 minutes to flip the side so that it can be distracting when you are trying to work, it breaks your flow. You can listen to a CD but still you have to get up every 45 minutes to an hour which is not bad, but for me I like to just put on a playlist and forget about it and the music just keeps going while I work. So that's one example. Secondly, the world is adapting to it. If you buy a new computer, a lot of them don't have CD or DVD drives built in, you have to put an external one on and if you buy new car a lot of them don't even have CD or cassette decks or anything like that. Another thing, if you live in a country that's not the US Canada or UK or Europe sometimes physical media is hard to get. For example, I live in Mexico and I can order CDs off Amazon, but they're kind of expensive and that it takes me about 2 weeks to get a new release so there's that.
Great video. I stream a lot of stuff because of convenience, but I almost always buy the physical product too for play at home. In another of Pete’s videos, he mentions how hard it is now to play physical media in your car due to lack of CD players. Without streaming, I’d be hard pressed to listen to music while driving - and that would be a big loss. I do worry about people who just stream for individual songs, though. The album as an art form seems to be going the way of the dodo. And to me, at least, it remains mostly about albums. One last thing: I think RU-vid Music is the best streaming service, if you call it that. It has so many relatively obscure albums that other services don’t.
@@LairoftheAlchemist Sure. I really like your videos. They’re very thoughtful, like all of your output. Regarding your Sabbath commentary, perhaps something on when Sabbath went almost prog metal? In my view, from 72/73-75, they got close. But I’m biased because I’m a prog fan and that is also my favorite period of Sabbath. So, maybe I’m seeing too much into that.
I think there’s room for both streaming and physical media. I still buy CDs if it’s a band I’m really into. At the same time , I enjoy the ability to make multiple playlists of my favorite artist or genres.
I buy vinyl and rip them to flac or download vinyl rips. I sell the records I buy after ripping them and just use a portable flac player. I prefer the sound of vinyl but I don't collect them. Physical media takes up too much space and I don't like having to flip LP's or putting in the care to keep them noise free.
As a disabled person streaming music is how I solely listen these days. Unless I have someone to put a cd into the player there is no way for me to listen to physical media. I’ve used all of the popular apps and prefer Apple over the others especially since Apple is now obtainable on the Xbox.
I've paid a lot of attention to this, and I've really found that a high percentage of the time, streaming creates "flavor of the moment" songs/bands. Very disposable as there is zero longevity. Blame it on the convenience of streaming, but it's a constant motion of "on to the next one". Rarely does anyone fully absorb music over a long period of time.
Great chat, but I think the next question is, two-fold, does Spotify make money? What have they reported in each of that last 15 years? Next, what should the price be? I wonder if heavy usrs, those feeling guilty about the artists' pay... should there be some sort of $40 a month patron level. Maybe there are even perks. But I'm sure Daniel would say, maybe, but set that against the tens of millions who want it free. So bottom line, what should the price be? Especially if there's one price fits all.
Interesting point and I don't know the answer, I think they have been losing money or just breaking even. I do think at some point it will have to become more expensive or at least have a tiered system where maybe you pay more and somehow get more. After people being on streaming for so many years they might be willing to pay more or upgrade. Just as a note...Spotify paid out 9 billion to the record industry last year.
I bet it will be extremely rare buying cd's and vinyls generations after us. streaming is by far the easiest way to listen to music and that will always win in the end. With all these smart devices it will be even more easy and popular. You just say a song and it plays automatically on your speakers and maybe we just need to think of a song in the future, who knows. :D I just need to look around me, I have hardly any friends who buys albums unless they are collectors. It's just RU-vid, Spotify and Apple Music that rules. Vinyls will always be the coolest format for me but I rarely listens to music that way anylonger.
That's a good point that as future generations come into music I think they will be less and less likely to want a physical product. It's just not music either, movies, books, magazines are all heading the way to digital only.
There are a ton of albums that are not on streaming platforms. Especially lesser-known metal bands from the 80's. I buy CD's (when I can find them) and listen to some of these bands for free on RU-vid. This is the only problem I have with streaming. I don't have a ton of disposable income so that's how I listen. Occasionally I will even buy a cassette or vinyl record if it's something I really like! Streaming is convenient, but it's not for me.
@@LairoftheAlchemist although u did say we can support them in other ways like merch and concerts. So that's good. Thy should be happy their music is widely available ,in the meantime.
Excellent points, John ... but vinyl remains the best means of listening to music imho. Streaming is great for the car or podcasts or whatever, but I remain committed to buying and listening to vinyl. Nothing comes close.
With Streaming now there is too much product out there. Now anybody with little talent can create product overwhelming the music market. And the talented now struggle to make a living in the industry
Hi John Very valid points. I don't stream ie Spotify, all my music is physical. Having said that without the Internet and RU-vid I would not discover new bands. I must admit though that music has become in certain genres throwaway, lots of people don't seem to have much attention spell ie more listen to a song like it but don't seem to want to sit down put an album on and listen and enjoy. Many reaction channels do this or find a band don't realise they have other material but don't go back to that. Song picking argh 😢. Sad in many ways. Take care
Thanks for the comment, I do agree that too much music is a bit of a bad thing causing people to not focus but I also think younger generations will just consume music in a different way than we did when were young.
Streaming services are how most folks listen to music in 2025, just like in the 90s it was CDs, in the 80s it was cassettes and the 70s it was vinyl heavy. You keep up with the times or get left behind. 20 years from now Streaming will be looked at as antiquated or old school.
People should boycott Spotify. The CEO has basically said A.I should generate music ‘content’ from now on as its cheap and you don’t need to pay those pesky musicians. Nate Garrett from Spirit Adrift did a video reacting to it. So yes its not just ‘physical media’, streaming and the people who own these companies are eventually going to destroy music as you once knew it.
Check out the video I linked in the description called "It's not Spotify's fault"...I agree with you to a degree but think the music industry deserves some (a lot) of the blame for the current situation they are in.
Sorry, but this digital and streaming of music has made music worthless. People that consume music this way do not appreciate it or spend time with it. Just click individual songs and if it doesn't give immediate graduation, click to something else. And you say the artists don't get paid the way they should with streaming...of course they don't. This is the reason millions of people stream music BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. if artists received proper royalties for their music with streaming, you'd see more people buying physical media again.
