For all the flaws in the episode, it kinda works realistically, but very comedically. I laughed so hard when Billy books it a mere 100 yards before he runs out of coal and water. He knew good and well that he was gonna run out, but he didn't listen. Hysterical

I'm not a fan of Billy, but the fucked thing I realized about this episode that is it can work, and could've been something fans would've liked. If I were to write this episode it would've gone like this. Billy is bought to shunt and pilot for knapford, in typical Gordon, Henry, and James fasion they bully Billy and order him about like they did with Duck and Percy. Billy is a rather innocent and naive engine so he gets rather annoyed and hurt by their orders. At last he snaps and refuses to do anything for them, thomas(if I'm keeping somewhat close to the episode) is brought to teach Billy what to do. Billy assumes Thomas is just trying to boss him around and then follows a montage of Billy shunting trucks into the wrong places and generally causing havok. This comes to the fat controller scolding Billy for his actions, but also finds out why he did it and then tells off the big three engines. The three knock it off and Billy learns not to take crap from them, but he should listen to when others tell him what to do for his job. Idk if this is any better, but it's just my idea of how to make it work a little better.
I don't like Billy either, and I'm glad he didn't stick around, but this idea sounds pretty good, and would give Billy a reason to act like such a little shit to Thomas, instead of just, "not liking being told what to do." Gordon, James, & Henry going back to their old ways because of a new shunter sounds even more fun than what we got.
I see potential on Billy, too. But, the way I depict his personality is formerly grumpy, careless, and impatient to now friendly, caring, and a chad, but, nervous and worrying. And the way I rewrite the episode he was introduced in is having Fergus as the main lead instead of Thomas, though Thomas would appear as a supporting character, not have the three strike formula, have Billy be rough and careless with the Troublesome Trucks and brushing off Fergus' advice, and have Billy nearly have an accident thanks to the Troublesome Trucks, giving him serious PTSD of hills until then instead of him wasting his coal and water. And lastly, the way I would depict his flashback is have him formerly an industrial engine who worked at a coal colliery on the Mainland, which was the cause of his carelessness. I know it may not be perfect, but, that's just how I would depict him.

I honestly hate and Like Billy at the same Time. I like his basis, livery and the fact he has bucktooth, but I also hate him because of the Way he acted in, "Don't be Silly Billy". I honestly think Billy had potential.
While the episode is good enough as it is, I think it could've been funnier to see someone like Duck in Thomas' role here, Edward might have been a good choice too, but of course this being the hit era it has to be Thomas, I can only imagine what an interaction between Fergus and Billy would be like. Also, Billy is literally me when someone says I should wear a coat.
Just like Samson not every character needs to be happy go lucky super nice or super smart and not every character needs to change at the end of the episode
I think Billy could be better if he was more fancier. Perhaps a deep British accent with a monocle who's similiar to Gordon. Where he's extremely prideful and boastful. It's a weird thought but that's just me.
Jar Jar Binks is another example. Honestly, I may have been on the wrong side when it comes to Billy. It's almost like when Thomas was a little shit head when Edward was training him on how to take care of coaches and freight cars.

I don’t think Billy is the worst character of the show, there’s plenty of worse ones, Rajiv and Hannah are hell of a lot more annoying then Billy, however, I’m personally really glad that Billy never appears again, Becuase I feel if he did appear more often, he would become much more annoying than in this episode, though, what is even the moral of this episode.
while i see your points, and honestly agree with most of them, the problem with billy isn't just him as a character, but the fact nothing was done with him further, while yes it leaves it up to interpretation and all that jazz, it still just paints him as an arsehole who thinks he knows better, and that is just it, thats all we have, i mean yes he learns not to be such an arse because comeuppance, but like, there is a reason people like charlie and not billy (although i can't stand charlie) and thats because character development past 1 outing, i do think as a character billy could be quite interesting and more well liked in the fandom, but he needs more backstory and fleshing out, ive seen a comment that could do this well as a re-write, but its that lack of fleshing out that has relegated him to being "hated" as i do remember a certain pink engine being hated originally before proper fleshing out in later series, and if she had that one episode where she was just a thomas simp and that sall, she'd be hated just as much as billy, i mean i do think dennis is the second most hated because again he's just a lazy arse, that is all he is, fan content has made him interesting as of late but like, he has nothing going for him from his debut, and this is an issue with the least liked characters, nothing ever got done with them after their debut, all because hit wanted merchandise, but said merch would have sold better with more frequent character usage and development TL:DR Billy only sucks to the fandom because hit did a shit job with him, but he could work with the right development
Well said. maybe a cameo hinting at his development further would have been nice to see. like in the episode when thomas is running around with a sail boat, he could have passed billy and billy couldve said something like "you need to slow down and be careful" or something.
@@TankEngineJonJon aye, just anything to make him seem a bit more developed i mean you could even keep his temper as a trait, which could get him into messes, i mean imagine him in a story with duck, you'd have the thomas way mixed with don't be silly billy, actually, that could work, duck and billy getting on each other's nerves until a big fuck up, both conceding that, while yes they have their own way of doing things or are somewhat inexperienced in billy's case, they can work it out together, by taking a bit of column a and a bit of column b culminating in there still being 2 ways of doing things, the wrong way or the sodor way, but you'd need billy and duck to have a right go at each other voicing their side of things, like billy telling duck that just because he has his ways of doing things they aren't the best but on the flipside duck mentions the fact he only goes on about the great western way as he wants to help others succeed and doesn't mean to be this big know it all knob he's known to be, which leads to them both understanding each other and coming to a conclusion on how to remedy whatever situation they are in, character development for both duck and billy and thomas can be taken out the picture, or, mayhaps thomas is the voice of reason, like instead of harold in the thomas way, he is the load being transported for whatever reason, and the 2 of them have knocked him off somehow or gotten him wedged in a low tunnel/bridge or whatever, i do think that could work
I prefer Billy over Charlie. Heck, I prefer Billy over Nia. Is he the best character? No, but at least he has one that isn’t annoying (I blame the writer of the episode for sticking to an episode format).
For some reason, when someone does their own take on Billy and he's not being an annoying little shit, it never feels right. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like keeping Billy annoying is just funny. With all the Diesel antagonists in the series, I feel like Billy being somewhat of an annoying steam engine antagonist would be really funny. He better than Charlie imo, at least hes not telling mid jokes all the time.
FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS! But still who in this universe likes Billy? Noone. But I don't hate Billy like a lot of people I just don't care to hate him plus Nia, Charlie, Bash And Dash are far worse than Billy.
Finally. Some love for my favorite character. What irritates me most is fans will complain about Billy yet not do anything to make him good. Like shut your stupid mouths. If you don't like the way he was written, let's see you do better. Remember idiots, Billy never asked to be written the way he was. Same goes to Charlie and the logging locos. Billy is a rather relatable character if you think about it.
