Tyler, as a survivor of severe P.T.S.D. from years of the Marine Corps and a lifetime of being a Road Deputy in a large Department, the only thing that helps my PTSD injury is “MINDFULNESS”. My Great Dane Gunner would lay on me during my night terrors. Most times I would scare awake. Mindfulness comes in when you do wake, you must instantly realize your at home, your ok and your not at the scene. Smells may affect you for a while (gun powder, antifreeze, battery acid get me- car crashes and gun calls). But again, mindfulness really does help.
Had an encounter with a large black bear and her cub 5 years ago, no gun, first light, 10 feet growling and for some reason she did not charge, very lucky and that was the last time I went in the woods without my 40 pistol. He is lucky to be alive, thank god!
Wish they would have interviewed his dad too, if even for a moment. This young man certainly looks up to and has immense respects for him. Both amazing humans.

@@kdw75 I’m a dad of young boys who I take hunting with me all the time. One of the areas we hunt has black bears, although typically timid they hold the record for the most fatalities on humans. When we are out in bear woods I do my best to remain on alert yet still allow them to explore and be independent. It’s not always easy.
@@ironbludI think the main reason black bears have higher kill rate is because they are more numerous in population. Also grizzly and polar bears are usually away from populated areas
This is the kind of hero we should look up to and respect - what a great father son relationship to model and use as a template. Thank you for sharing and so glad you and your father as safe. It is hard to believe you were able to be so prepared and skilled.
Wow, what an incredible story. What a gift your dad was in this emergency. I’ll bet it felt like forever until you finally got some real pain medicine. So glad you made it out alive! 😊❤️
Hello from Ontario Canada I'm so thankful that you survived your bear attack. The wounds you can see will heal but the trauma you've gone through is the real work. Be patient with yourself during this part of the healing. A friend told me that the trauma was the worst part. Please see a therapist. God bless you, your dad and your family.
They were not mauled by a bear there needs to be legislation to fine people who should know better like this fellow who try to popularize stories for attention which put bears and people at risk by undermining well known bear education and awareness skills. If he is an experienced hunter he knows the dynamic which occurred and that this was a defensive position by the yearling bear just older than a cub, I saw the photo of the bear it was small, the mother may have been close by just let it go on it's own. This bear was startled, likely never seen people before, scared ect acting out of fear. This is an example of a person attempting to gain attention at the expense of important bear awareness education which saves peoples and bears lives and/or prevents injury to both.

I survived a near plane crash, and I recognize the manner in which he’s talking about what happened to him. He’s still in shock, but it’s really good to have to talk about it. The trauma leaves the body via the spoken word.

Growing up in Soldotna and you didn't expect brown bears up there?! Just an observation there is quite a history of brown bears along that trail. Several others have had close calls and a few maulings over the years I think. I would always expect browns along there - especially Juneau Lake area. Great reactions, good on your dad - probably couldn't find a better trained partner. These Inreaches have saved a bunch of folks now but they can be tricky to work. Best wishes and speedy recovery. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, the InReach can be problematic in that the batteries can freeze once they get old. With ours, that we bought ten years ago, I loaned it to my brother who was taking his wife and adult daughter and son on a very wilderness alpine trek, to a lodge that was a six hour ski-in. He was finding that his didn’t work well when he tested it that winter, even though it was a slightly newer InReach, and both of ours had the original batteries. They both failed when he tried to send me a text message when he was out at the trail because the older batteries failed in freezing temperatures. I have replaced the batteries now, but we haven’t paid to activate the InReach yet as we haven’t gone on our usual wilderness canoe trip this year ( due to all the fires and smoke) so I won’t be testing it out this coming winter either, unfortunately, but I’m pretty sure a new battery won’t freeze as easily, especially if the InReach is kept against one’s body, I hope.
@@paddlefar9175 That's why you take a personal locater beacon (PLB) with you as well. 2 is 1, 1 is none. Everytime I go in the wilderness I have my inReach mini on me and a small PLB in case one of them fails. My life is worth the minimal cost.
Tyler you handled yourself well as did your father. Good luck in Texas never forget your AK roots - rock on.! Thank Jesus you are still here for your wife and fam. Big thanks to dad of course! Great bear story, a true survivor.
Thank you for doing a follow up from your first video immediately following your bear attack. Good to see that you’re doing so well. No body better to have with you but a Fish and Game Officer/Dad with at times like that.
Congratulations. Preparation, awareness, and staying in control of yourselves. Good job. Sorry for the attack but it is always a possibility in that country. Good oh for both you.
Glad to see you are recovering well. That’s one heck of an experience. Scary stuff. You were lucky to have your father with you with all his experience and training. I wasn’t there but I don’t think bear spray would have helped you much in that situation. You probably would’ve gotten it all over yourself as well, and then what? 10 mm is the best bear spray in close quarters combat when you are fighting for your life with an animal that fights for a living. Once again, glad you are doing well.
Bear Spray would have stopped the Bear instantly if he had it in hand, which you should have if there is Bear scat on the trail and high grass. Bear Spray works instantly, bullets don’t unless you hit the spinal cord. He shot it several times before it stopped slashing and biting him.
@@paddlefar9175It was already too close plus as he stated he was in the only path of escape for the bear and then he couldn't of sprayed it directly on top of him for his own sake so thankfully in this case he did have a pistol. Many, many times bears run thru the spray anyway if they're in full charge already. Bear spray is great if the bear is coming closer to you say on a trail etc but in this case I don't think it would've done him any good.
@@nundisclosed7135 You could be right about that of course, but I am very doubtful it would be statistically the case and I’ll try to explain why I think that. There have been attacks where the Bear exploded out of a concealed spot and was on the person in a few seconds. In one case the young woman had to spray over the back of her head while being bitten on her back and as soon as she deployed the spray, the attack stopped and she was not injured badly and she was able to walk back out. If his father had been carrying spray he too could have given it a dose in the face to stop it biting his son repeatedly. Even if the person getting attacked gets sprayed, or sprays themselves along with the Bear, the most important thing is to get the Bear off as quickly as possible and away from the victim, to minimize repeated serious injuries. His father did not want to shoot the Bear for fear of also hitting his son, but he could easily spray the Bear aiming the continuous stream at the Bear’s eyes and mouth. If his son got a dose too, that would suck but he’d recover. Of course it’s always good to have a high powered firearm too, along with the Bear Spray, when in Grizzly country.
@@paddlefar9175 I've heard other stories when bear spray wasn't enough. Also last month an older couple was attacked at a rest stop, man used bear spray & it didn't stop him! He fought a few more minutes before running off, stole a car & drove off! I remember thinking I'll never use that for mace.
@@sandyjuntunen4088 Maybe the older man had a bad position with wind or something? There are always outlier situations, but in general, Bear Spray will stop a Bear or a person from attacking and make them want to get away from you. I think most people would be reluctant to shoot someone with a lethal firearm and so they might hesitate, which could be problematic for them, but in the case of a non lethal force like Bear Spray, one is more likely not to hesitate, and it has equal or better stopping power. A large study report that I read showed that a Bear Spray was 98% effective against Bears, so it’s probably close to that with humans if you conceal it at first and then pull it out and use it quickly. A bottle is much smaller and lighter to carry for possible Bear attack than a firearm, so your more likely to have it on your person, than a rifle that is often propped up against something, too far away.
Glad you are okay young man, good Daddy you got there. I'm in black bear country and I have this conversation with people often, .45ACP or 10MM while in the back country. The first for people, the 10mm is for bears.
True, this was a young bear who was surprised no drama here, a defensive attack, likely never seen people before. 95% of g. bear attacks are defensive based on highly credible studies readily available on line.
As a city girl -- I have no knowledge of huntring, guns or bears. I was riveted by this story. Wow,. Sounds like son and dad knew how to prepare for a camping/hiking trip. It probably saved both of them that there was space between them before the bear attacked. I also love the great relationship between father and son. What a. traumatic event! I hope the son gets some counselling because PTSD is going to be real. I'm glad you are survived because things could have gone really wrong. I think I'll stick to my city life. Bears scare me to death.
He needs to talk to somebody soon. Someone he can trust and completely himself with, and talk as long as he wants, and help him recover. Feel safe & secure again, or he's gonna have trouble with that PTSD. God bless him & his dad. Edited.
I'm guessing for a job in Austin area. Said allowed to do "remote work", which seems while he is recovering in Alaska. Be quite a shock of adjustment to weather to move from Alaska to central Texas in August. Been heat index around 112F last few days. Good point about staying in Alaska to be treated for a bear wound (like a cat with lots of bacteria). He didn't say much about the right calf with tourniquet, but must be a nasty bite & claw on that leg. Seems the 10mm gun shot was less bad than the bear. Wow!
That's what I want to know. Austin is the equivalent of Los Angeles or Seattle and full of leftist hippies who refuse to hear other opinions. Outside of Austin is beautiful but hot and no mountains or snow except the usual 5yr flurry or 10yr two inch snowfall and freeze.
Guessing job, too. Tx is way too hot & humid (West Tx is dry but not the rest. Ugh). It is so horrendous where you cannot even enjoy anything outdoorsy…at 9pm if you go for a walk, it can still be 98 out.
I am glad you are a survivor. You will need your resilience when you learn about Austin, Texas politics. I moved out of Austin to a small town outside of the insanity.
Hiking in central Texas much safer. Watch out for rattlesnakes, the heat, and scumbags on sixth street and you’ll be fine. Hope you have a quick recovery.
A respectable young man with an exceptional father. I’m wondering at the extreme environmental change. Sounds like he will be fine. Glad his outcome was as it was!
You guys have no idea what it’s like to be below you in 🇨🇦 and not being allowed to be armed for these scenarios/situations . @@michaelsamuel4159 that’s the caliber. The type of projectiles can make a huge difference. Hard cast bullets are ideal for animals that size, you want maximum penetration to get to the vitals.
@@susanbengston3208 rifles can be used for both hunting and defence from animals. PH’s in Africa and guides in Alaska will use rifles to defend themselves against charging animals. Rifles tend to have a lot more power than a handgun, and that’s what you want. Stopping power!

Wow. So many mental health experts out there who know nothing about trauma response. This guy wasn't teared up or crying, and what happened was fast which precludes the trauma response from even developing. He was focused on doing survival business not dying. Take it from a real expert he's doing great! 😉
It doesn't matter if the incident "happened fast". Mental trauma is still trauma, and will occur at any speed of the incident occurring. So look at yourself in the mirror when you try to call out others for their opinion. And yes, I've suffered various types of trauma and all have scared me in some way. Not all of them were long drawn out incidents. For example, I now have a fear of people knocking on my door. It didn't take much for that to occur. But it did.
@@SarahJSwiftA big factor is if the trauma is caused by another human being or not; how old the victim is; if someone helps/rescues them; other traumas in past and if they were similar or different…this guy’s trauma was so much less than what so many children experience and that comes out later.
Newsflash for you…Nature is a 24/7/365 murder-fest, and humans have been an integral part of said murder-fest until quite recently. Modern technology merely deludes the Bambi-ist hippie-types into mistakenly thinking otherwise.

@@GunsandbunsmmaI think pistols are often strapped in Alaska due to the thick brush they are going to be walking through. Just out of curiosity, have you ever had a brown bear suddenly appear, charge your dad then change directions and come after you in a 2-3 second window? You might be on uneven ground, surrounded by thick brush, not squared to the moving(quickly!!) target. Everyone seems to think they are immortal, and flawless.
