If someone asks me how to take GoW Ragnaröks combat to the next level, I will immediately refer to this video. Because you won't need anything else. Amazing how much work you put into this. GOAT 10/10
Appreciate that man. Wouldn't have been able to make it without so many awesome people in this community. The grind is insane from y'all and we've found some incredible combat mechanics these past few months.
Thanks man! Yeah, it had been a while since I released a tutorial and a lot of stuff has been found these past few months so I wanted to get this out before NG+. I know there are a good number of people who were interested in learning animation cancels so I wanted to be as thorough as possible and make it accessible for even newer players to the game.
Tip for those trying. It's really not a race for a lot of the ones at the start of the video. Practice doing the inputs then speed it up. Picking this up faster than I thought I would. Appreciate it Harvard.
Thank you, bro! After watching this tutorial, animation cancels are a lot easier. I discovered an easier version of the Spear Drill + Hyperion Pull and Gale Force + Hyperion Pull. For Spear Drill + Hyperion Pull, you can do: X (Dodge) > TRIANGLE > R2 > Down D-pad > Hold L2 and R1 to start Spear Drill > Left D-pad (while holding R1). For Gale Force + Hyperion Pull, you can do: X (Dodge) > TRIANGLE > R2 > Down D-pad > Hold L2 and R2 to start Gale Force > Left D-pad (but do not let go of R2 after starting Gale Force). I hope this helps! I wasn't able to time it correctly before, so I tried this instead, and it worked because you don't need to wait for the axe to return to your hand to switch. With these input orders, you can switch to the spear after the first R2. Thanks for reading, and I hope this helps!
Glad I was able to help you out dude! And yeah, that definitely works. I made this a while ago and there's been a lot of stuff found since. ABG Spartan is probably the best Ragnarok player rn if you want to check him out. He constantly has insane cancels on his channel.
I appreciate you doing this. Everyone else just gatekeeps and flexes without showing players how to do these things. Most of what I know had to be learned via observing, so this will help. No thanks to those gatekeepers
Game breaker god is where I’m pretty sure he learned most of these moves. He has tutorials. For each weapon. Spear, axe, blades. U can check it. Anyway. Good job mate. Gbg is where I learned the cancel’s. But I would say that u are definitely consistent. Which isn’t easy. An plus the spear blades cancel is nice. 👍. I’ll steal that one thank you. lol
@@coreypayne261 I learned maybe 1 from GBG and the rest I either found or learned from some of the other content creators I mention in the comment I posted.
Whirlwind is one of my favorite cancels to use which is why I spent a little extra time explaining it. Looks awesome and has some cool variations with the extra throw and frost awaken cancel you're able to do. Thanks for checking out the vid man!
Very helpful! Learnt from some new things from this, like that you can go straight into a cancel after the returning storm cancel, keep the fire content coming🔥🔥🔥
26 mins with that much editing. That must took some time^^ Great video and explained very well. I'll guide everyone that wants to get deeper into game to this video. Would even say its the best tutorial for ragnarok yet, at least for cancels. 👍
Thanks man that means a lot. This one definitely took the longest to record and edit. I was working on it for about a week to make sure I was satisfied with the explanations of everything. Wanted to get it out before NG+.
In addition to the button inputs in the description or video, I would suggest adding alternate input lists in terms of each button's functions. Some of us use custom control schemes. Here are some. Frost Awaken 3 Melee - Start barehand (R1, X, Triangle, R1, L2 + R2, Hold Triangle) (Light attack, dodge, recall, light attack, heavy axe throw, hold recall) Frost Awaken 3 Ranged - (L2 + R1, X, Hold triangle, L2 R1) (Light axe throw, dodge, hold recall, light axe throw) Returning Whirlwind - Start Barehand (X, Triangle, R1, L2 R2, [L1 R1 as soon as the axe leaves your hands]) (Dodge, recall, light attack, heavy axe throw, block + light attack as soon as the axe leaves your hands) Returning Storm - Start Barehand (X, Triangle, R1, L2 + R2, [L1 R2 as soon as the axe leaves your hands]) (Dodge, recall, light attack, heavy axe throw, block + heavy attack as soon as the axe leaves your hands) Glacial Rake - Start Barehand (X, Triangle, Hold R1, Tap L2) (Dodge, recall, hold light attack, tap aim) Frost Awaken + Glacial Rake - Start Barehand (X, Triangle, R1, L2 + R2, Hold R1, Hold Triangle) (Dodge, recall, light attack, heavy axe throw, hold light attack, hold recall) Difficult Frost Awaken - Start Barehand (X, Hold Triangle, Tap Left Dpad, L2 + R2, Hold R1, R2) (Dodge, holy recall, switch to blades, heavy axe throw, hold light attack, heavy attack)
With all these cancels, it's possible to do different ones. I just did the initial combo and when he throws the axe, press D-pad down holding L2 + R1, then D-pad right to magically have the axe in hand and on release of R1 it throws axe and spear again. It recalls the axe without having to wait for it to come back. Pretty sik.
@@craigwilson8255 I cover that one in this video at around 21:27. Might be slightly different setup, but you can do it a few different ways. Really cool cancel
@@Not_HarvardYeah, you did cover it. Guess I'm just stoked to find different places to use it. Still trying to get them down as muscle memory, because they're still difficult against enemies, or stringing together against enemies lol. I still suck, but keep practicing. I saw your first ever no hit run. Pretty awesome! Congrats!
You're a beast homie.....I KNOW this S took a WHILE to record, edit. You deserve more subs than you have man. Stay grinding, you will accomplish your goals, I have no doubt. Too bad GOW doesn't have the following or views of games like Minecraft. You would be massive if it did......I've never played the game, but it's still one of the most viewed games around. Great content brotha!
Thank you for the kind words man. This video definitely took the most time to record, edit, and master the animations. I know there are a good number of people who love GoW and with NG+ coming out soon I wanted to share as much knowledge as I can. More people practicing means more potential to find awesome new things.
I agree, hopefully the community continues to grow man. GOW series easily top 3 favorite games I have ever played. I can't wait for NG+! I've already beat Ragnarok 4 times on GMGOW. On a LVL 1 playthrough w no upgrades, in between playing Wo Long. I don't want to burn myself out before NG+ arrives. Keep up the good work man, I hope your channel continues to grow. You deserve it
@@KneeColAus That's incredible man. I'm doing a slow progress playthrough right now because I'm doing videos in between fights and stuff but I'm trying to get all the boss fights done before NG+. Hype to see what new things they add with the patch.
Liked & subscribed. Great stuff. I typically play a game 1-2 max but I just can't let go of this one, especially with the structure of Valhalla. There's just always more to learn and master with the combat. I play on GMGOW/Show me Mastery and still feel my combat needs fluidity. I can triangle spam blades/dauntless but that just feels cheesy.
Shoutout to Ragnarok Combos, Fallb0rn, Itsstance, kiwamisakeruGouGaron, ABG Spartan, Tmo, Dasalli 100, GBG, and Soh. I just slowed down your inputs and I think u said it wrong looked at your controller and your pushing x,hold 🔺️, r2,L2+r2,r1 u can look for yourself if u don't believe me u gotta slow it down all the way first ima try it this way and see what happens thanks I appreciate what u have done with the animation cancels your a genius keep up the great tutorial work
@@bigreg8512 I just checked the inputs again and what I said is right. If you're having trouble with the glacial rake part that usually means you're not holding R1 early enough. You want to hold R2 just long enough to have a slightly delayed heavy axe throw animation so you can get the first Frost Awaken R1 attack off, then keep holding R1 and Triangle so it recalls the axe and gives you the glacial rake. You'll notice when I show the cancel, my arms are up in the air holding the heavy axe throw until the Frost Awaken R1 goes off. Make sure that before you begin that throw animation, you're already holding R1.
Useful video, thanks for making it. I've been exploring GoW: Ragnarök mechanics by myself, and I stumbled upon some of this sort of attack overlapping/cancelling effects myself too. If you don't mind a question, is Relic overlapping/cancelling a known thing?
No problem dude. And yes, relic cancelling is a known thing. If you want to see it being used to its full potential I suggest checking out Tmo: www.youtube.com/@TmoTheOne He's the one that found it for Ragnarok and has some really cool mechanics with it
@@Not_Harvard Ah, thanks. Do you know any potential use for this overlap/cancelling tech for speedruns, besides potentially speeding up combat? I've been exploring overlaps for about two months, and I've found that it's a really unique and incredibly complex set of glitches of the like I haven't seen in another video game. So, I'm inclined to think that there must be something here to lend itself to some kind of new speedrun tech as well. For instance, it was possible to use an overlapped evade -> recall -> roll -> Axe Throw interrupted with Rage to give Kratos the Fury-move set even when outside Rage. It would've certainly helped a lot in New Game runs, but sadly, that variation was patched.
@@AKheon There's definitely some implementation of animation cancels for speedruns. Most notably there's an animation cancel with frost awaken on the axe that looks goofy but lets you move incredibly fast. Newer God of War games have far less of a speedrun community than the older ones though.
@@Not_Harvard Do you have a video of that fast movement tech? The newer GoW-games feel a bit more restrictive for sure. Personally, I was really demotivated with GoW 2018, but I feel Ragnarök has more glitch potential.
Can you make one for the runic cancels? I always manage to get it on cooldown with animation cancel but it does not actually go off. I saw one really cool with double hels touch while throwing the axe into ivalidis anvil
I don't play this game nearly as much as I used to. There's a few channels that have really good runic cancel tutorials though. You might check out Tmo, ABG Spartan, or Fallb0rn for more tutorials.
For the first 2 frost awaken 3 cancels I have it disabled because that cancel is for before you access to frost awaken 3. All the other cancels you turn on frost awaken 3.
The order for that one is very important. So do the normal initiation combo by starting barehand -> (X - triangle - R1 - L2 + R2) As soon as the axe leaves your hands you want to click Triangle, tap left dpad, and then R2. Make sure you are clicking left dpad and then r2 very fast. If you go to the part of the video I show the combo and then slow down to .25 you can see how quickly I'm pressing the buttons. Essentially what's happening with that cancel is you're throwing the axe, clicking triangle to start the recall, and then while the axe is coming back to your hands, you're clicking left dpad and R2, and by the time you click those 2 buttons, the axe is returned and you have it as your primary again. So the time frame for clicking left dpad and r2 is while the axe is in the air on the way to your hands. Sorry if that made it more confusing, I thought it might help give you a better timeframe but if you have more questions just let me know.
Help me sir i can't do the first move I don't know if I need to press it faster or I need to work on my timing I have a trouble doing the first move 😢 I can't connect the x triangle r1 to L2 R2 how to do that sir
Try not holding the buttons, before the axe reaches Kratos' hand press L2+R2 immediately. Same thing with returning whirlwind when he throws the axe. Do not hold the buttons.
The only thing I can say is try to change your timings slightly. Try going faster or slower and see if you hit it. This is an animation cancel that a lot of people struggle with, so you're not alone. All of the ones I'm showing in the video took hours of practice to be able to do them consistently.
Maybe someone can help me out here. Trying out give me god of war and am getting hit way too often. I block, but since I’m in the middle of an attack, I get hit and the shield doesn’t come out. Any advice?
Some attack animations are longer than others and you can't immediately shield. It's usually the combo finishers or heavier attacks. I would just mess around with combos and see which ones you're able to instantly cancel with blocking. GMGOW pretty difficult and a lot of us die to normal enemy encounters all the time so don't feel bad if you die a lot. Practice is the best way to improve.
I initiate the combo by throwing the axe first, so I usually just throw the axe and then go into the return combo with frost awaken 3 cancel at the end. 21:20 is an example of how I use it in normal combat encounters. I don't always use guardians fury, but the dps from the combo is very high compared to just clicking r1 for basic attacks.
That cancel is all about timing when you start holding R1. You want to make sure you're holding R1 before the heavy axe throw animation goes off, and you're continuing to hold triangle. If you're getting the glacial rake but not the frost awaken, your timing for holding triangle is off. If you're not getting the glacial rake, you're probably holding R1 too late. If you're still struggling, just let me know which part specifically you're not getting and I might be able to help more.
If you're not doing X Triangle R1 fast enough the heavy axe throw won't work correctly. If you're still having an issue after a bit of practice lmk and I'll try to help as much as I can.
