IN-DEPTH: The 2023 IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 Is Back To Genta's Integrated Design 

I’m a huge fan of IWC. The price of this one is baffling. Why is it costing nearly 12,000? Significantly more than Portugese, Pilot’s Chrono, Mark XX, Aquatimer. Massive mistake. I’m a chemical engineer and I can’t afford it. Should call it manageur, because only managerial class can afford this, no technician will be wearing it.

4 or 5 k over priced. No micro adjustment. No exhibition window to see the lovely movement. And for almost the price of a Black Bay 54 you can get it in titanium! Ridiculous!

Another piece of information that I just learned and confirmed… The Aqua dial has polished center links, all others are brushed.

Would have loved this, but the price is crazy. Would probably get Rolex sub or gmt2 with this price 🤣

For me an amateur with limited budget, I may choose to buy 1 piece of Baume & Mercier Riviera 39mm with Baumatic 120 hours USD5500 (inc VAT) or a new Tudor Black Bay GMT Polar white (newest 2023) dial USD4500. If I am not mistaken, both IWC & Baume are using the same caliber (as sister's company of Richemont) IWC Ingenieur 40mm 32111 caliber 120 hours USD11,700. Am I right? IWC MARK XX pilot USD7500 - uses the same caliber as well. Movement: IWC calibre 32111 (manufacture, ValFleurier) - automatic - 21 jewels - 28,800vph (4Hz) - 120-hour power reserve - central hours, minutes and hacking seconds - date at 3 o’clock

It looks lovely, but where is the on-the-fly adjustment for the bracelet? How is it that my JLC Gran Sport from the 1990s manages to have micro adjustment on its butterfly clasp, while IWC still can't manage it thirty years later on a watch costing three times as much?

Understand the watch has the same movement as the Mark XX for only double the price - 12,7k EUR. And for just another 3.000 EUR more you could even get it in Titanium!

Awesome release....At the same time a dead on arrival because of the exorbitant pricing! Common IWC, which world are you in? I also read somewhere that the movement is not fully in-house designed and it is a modified ETA one!

IWC is going to catch a lot of heat for this and they deserve it. The pricing clearly says that they want to brush off prior customers and compete in the luxo realm.

Ive been waiting for this one for a while. I will have to see it in person before I can make a proper evaluation of its surprisimg pricing. I hope it does well though regardless of my doubts about the pricing. It looks and has the heritage for a proper hyped luxury sports watch and I hope it takes IWC to the next level.

Insane price. After the initial pop of sales, they are going to need to discount the hell out of this watch in order for it to sell. This is disrespectful to Genta’s legacy. Sad way to go, IWC. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it.

Great watch..... For 7 to 8k

This watch should not cost more than 6000CHF and i would even ask 20% discount. Who knows what are they smoking in Schaffhausen lately.

IWC shamelessly using a dead man's name to add 4-5k to the real price of this watch is certainly interesting. For the price they are quoting I'm going to Rolex, Omega or Cartier. Buying this watch at this price would just hammer home the fact that I can't afford a Nautilus or Royal Oak lol.

Contrary to all the other comments below, I believe that this watch is underpriced, from a marketing perspective. Being a Gerald Genta design, it belongs to the Graal triad: Royal Oak, Nautilus and Ingenieur. The AP an PP are way overpriced at dealer price, and people are paying 2/3 times the retail price on the gray market. Why, then, is the Ingeniur overpriced, when it costs a fraction of the other two and is way more solid and sporty?

I love the new design of the Ingenieur, and the fact they've gone back to Genta's initial design after so many years and missed opportunities. But my issues seem to be the same ones everyone else has - it's way too overpriced by about £4-5k, it lacks bracelet adjustment (and that easy link system), and it has a solid case back, which might have been necessary in decades past for anti-magnetic properties but in the days of silicone hairsprings, isn't needed. Personally, the Big Pilot 43 is the ideal model for IWC to follow. It was sympathetic to the original design, it was priced right, it had all the modern refinements people expect, and it shows off that wonderful movement. I suspect IWC will have enough feedback from this initial launch to do a revamp in about a year or so to correct most of these complaints - just don't expect that ridiculous price to come down.

I wonder if the closed case back is bacause that “iron cage” and magnetism. Since no one in the interviews asks that.

Crown guards were an aesthetically unwise addition. Price is ludicrous. Sad, because they were so close.

Mixed earlier comments: too expensive, pedestrian ETA movement. Does this watch not rank equally to the likes of GP Laureto, Chopard Alpine Eagle, Rolex Milegaus? Judging from the comments, should I be comparing this watch to perhaps the Omega's instead?

I was excited until I saw the price. The days of every now and then buying a luxury watch for fun are over. These watches are "decent car" money now.

Beautiful watch, but the pricing is absolutely ridiculous. It's more than what I paid for my Octo Finissimo, which has a proper haute horology movement finishing. It's not an in house IWC movement, thats BS. It's the same movement found inside a $3k Baume et Mercier. No quick bracelet removal, no micro adjust, no rubber strap. Seriously what are they thinking?

Haha....this Ingenieur is just a joke considering the price point of EUR 12,9K. Beautiful on the outside, rotten inside with a mediocre non inhouse caliber to be found in sister brand watches under EUR 3K (probably the real reason why it´s s not on display at the back), no on the fly bracelet adjustment (hey wait, while the designer said it was a very deliberate and conscious decision to go for the butterfly clasp, the CEO eroded this statement in the last hours of W&W with a hint, that you can get a fine-adjustment clasp "later this year" for some extra cash). I assume the competition (with products in the range between EUR 6-13K since this is the ballpark they left) is most likely having champagne parties and a good laugh, since the Ingenieur had a huge potential. Sadly enough - IWC (or Richemont with their boot in the back of the IWC management) - just ignored their customer base and prospective customers. And let´s not forget: it´s Boutique only, so even more greedy, casting the net for the last EUR/$ in margin and hoaxing their loyal AD´s. If done right, they could have already have sold shiploads of this model and would still have leeway to up the price moving forward. As the saying goes: nice outside but filthy underneath......

as always with iwc the price is just stupid. should be no more than 5 grand people with more money than sense will buy it i suppose. when you look at the longines spirit at under 2 grand with its quality looks even more silly.

IWC overpriced!!! The Ingenieur is like the Portfofino nobody wants. The movement is not even accurate +6/10seconds per day for >10k. This watch should not even go above an Omega Seamaster or AquaTerra.

Highly overpriced mediocrity. It makes the Laureato from GP with its stamped clous de Paris dial seem reasonable! Individuals desperate for an alternative status symbol may lunge at it only to come to their senses a few months later.
