A company that is willing to show videos and go to these lengths when something goes wrong, is a company that can be trusted to have done the right thing in the first place. Really nicely done on the diagnostic work! With regards to the bonus video, you’ve gone way above and beyond there with a brand new engine.

This is what I like about Team Darkside, they are willing to show the issues that can develop whilst making cars/vans do things they weren’t designed to. The transparency is really refreshing and I think anyone who knows engines knows this isn’t the fault of Team Darkside. Edit; posted that before seeing the “bonus section” OUCH!!

I think it's admirable that Darkside even posted this. No one wins out of this, but at least it shows from a really specialised point of view, what can happen. If I'd been the customer, I would've got Darkside to "fix it" and put it down to experience. The selling garage are never going to help with the bill. Great video.

Those selling garages, can be held responsible if they evidently did not follow best practices and withheld those defects from you. You'd win that any day in court, but no shop wants to go to court because that shows distrust. So they will settle to pay the repair and take the hit of the gamble they took. Going to court about these things just shouts shady and it makes customers go away. OFC one will not ruin you, but if you have a track record of lawsuits, bad reviews, then not many will want to do business with you. When I had a scooter that didn't run when it rained, I asked if they wanted to take a look at it, get it started again. They quoted me 50 euro's worth of just looking and would contact me if otherwise. Well, they took almost the entire thing apart without my consent and charged me for labor, new sparkplug, carb cleaning, emptied my tank with trying to reproduce the problem and then they said, we don't know what was wrong it just started again, somehow. I never went there again, because this was a well known common problem, it was just flooded, they could have just sprayed some starting fluid in it and it would have fired up again. But they charged me about 150 euro's for it, and said I needed a valve timing job. Which would cost me another 500. And i'm still mad about it haha, but I was too young to do anything about it, now things are different, an I am less compliant with shit companies pull like this. I helped many friends reclaim some of their spent money with just confronting people of their actions and made agreements, the deal is on paper(if agreed upon), that will be charged. Other not agreed upon work is not being payed for.

Yes and no really. If he bought it from a reputable garage who sent it to a “trusted garage” to fix the low oil pressure problem and they did this, then that place who sold it would like to know and maybe not use that mechanic again or make them fit a new engine if they want anymore work from the place where he bought this van from… Or, the garage where he bought it from says “sucks to be you” and closes the door in his face. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I used to work for The AA and I got to see a lot of dead or nearly dead engines. One extremely common theme was that they almost all had A LOT of oil in them. The reason is simple, oil light comes on, driver adds oil, often more than once. Driver thinks it’s an oil level light is the reason. I think this car had A LOT of oil in it. I’d like to see the customer comments but I think it’s possible that they knew the engine was already toast……be easy to blame you then!

I came here to say this. And also to point out that a wily customer might well put a known, knackered car into a tuner, hoping that due diligence doesn't get too detailed, and when the engine pops a week later the lawyers letter drops.

Years ago I bought a first gen(98)Yamaha r1 as a project. It was being sold with a blown head gasket because at 5k revs the coolant would blow back through the expansion tank. I travelled from Cheltenham to Cambridge. Met the guy, overlooked the bike which was in near mint condition and on the test ride was really strong under 5k and ran straight. I had a really good feeling especially after having a cup of tea and meeting his missus and young son, so handed the 2000 pounds loaded the bike into the van and got myself back home, happy that I could get the head gasket fixed and re sell it for about £3.5k(nice little profit). When the bike was in Swindon at my engine builder, got a dreaded call to him telling me the main gearbox bearing had a problem and when he took the box apart the main bearing fell apart in three pieces and was stuffed with silicone which he said would've been good for the test drive as I could only rev it to 5k. I could have gone back and forth with the seller, but Greg the engine guy said that he would just say he didn't know anything about it. So to lessen the stress, I had the extra work done and decided to keep it and enjoy it for six months and then sell it which I only just broke even. Lots of honest faces out there that are passing on known problems to gullible(me, but never again)people and hopi g they never come back, as above. However I did have some fun on it and did thrash it everywhere to blow the virtual cobwebs out of the bike and out of my head probably as well

This proves what an awesome company you are, the repair from the garage who replaced the bearings was half arsed to say the least. Evidently the car salesman wanted a quick sale and the only person who has unfortunately lost out is the customer. If I had a tuner tune the car and then my engine blew up then I wouldn't really expect them to go to the in depth levels you did to diagnose the fault of a hardware problem but this just proves what an excellent tuning company you are! No bullshit or pissing about, just straight talking and direct the point at helping the customer the best you can. Top job guys!

Purchased my second ever car from a sketchy dealer in Birmingham, 1.7 diesel Astra on 120k miles, supposed to be a very reliable engine. I was young, naive and didnt know much about cars at the time and didn't have anyone else around me for advice. Got to the dealers, car looked clean and tidy and the engine was already running. Sounded fine and no smoke or anything. At the time i didn't think anything was off about this. Went for a test drive and all was fine. Everything seemed to check out fine, other than it was due a service. I thought yeah OK, ill do a service on it myself, as the price is right. Think it was £900 for the car. Drive it home, without Tax or insurance. Again, young and naive. Fortunately I didn't get caught. I do an oil change on the car a week or two later, fire the car up and it immediately started knocking. All oil levels were correct and genuine filters and oil were fitted. In the end, the garage didnt want anything to do with the car and I had to pay almost the original purchase price of the car for a new engine to be fitted.

A difficult pill to swallow for the customer. Personally, I wouldn’t say it was your fault or that you had anything to do with it. There’s enough evidence there that the customer unfortunately had an engine that had been badly repaired and reassembled. Sucks to be on the receiving end but you’ve got more than enough to have your backs covered. As for the new engine for that other customer - ouch! Good on you for getting them a brand new crate engine and seeing it right. Many others wouldn’t have gone to those lengths, despite it being the right thing to do.

This is exactly why you should be ready to pay for new turbos / engines etc if you get a remap done, you really cannot expect any insurance to cover faults outside of the tuners responsibility. The software companies only ever warrant their software directly, not the consequences of massively hiking the power output for good reason! Also, another reason not to modify a high mileage used motor, unless you are sure of its history. FWIW, I'd only ever take a diesel motor to Darkside for tuning. Pity you don't offer petrol remaps, I'd be there tomorrow in the queue!

But the truth is the truth and the car was clearly bodged up and makes a professional mechanic cringe at the workmanship. Pride in your work can be achieved on a budget.. It's not something that can be taught having Pide in your work. Clearly Darkside do care about the quality of work and are trustworthy.. I always enjoy the in depth mechanical videos and off roading.. Obviously people will say about pre mapping test and checks oil pressure / oil analysis ect.. Bet it was originally driven with filthy oil or next to nothing in the sump before the bodged job was done on it. You guys have been really decent about it though. If I decide to keep my old runabout 530d a while longer I'll bring it to you guys.

So if the customer is understanding ye will get this wful mess sorted out and both team darkside and the customer will have happy days and he will have a far better and reliable van for years to come.

No one competent could say a simple stage 1 Remap could cause that much damage after just a dyno tune and a road test. The engine was on its last legs, maybe the Remap accelerated the death of it by a few months but when you get any tuning you got to take into account the extra stress on the engine involved. Unfortunately lots of people including solicitors won't be competent and blame you! Good excuse to do a cool engine swap though!

Super super super glue. Gutted for the customer, he bought a ticking time bomb and it was nobody's fault but the crooks who rebuilt it. That lovely sealing job on the sump shows the pride in their repairs. If you ever find out who rebuilt it would be a good video to visit them and glue their hat to their head.

Unlucky. The previous bodge caused that, no questions and only a matter of time before same thing happened with original power. Suppose it might be good, unless engine condition is absolutely guaranteed spot on (how?), that some level of strip-down happens before committing to the tune? Or they sign a disclaimer, agreeing that their engine is in prime nick or they pay for the pre-inspection. Dunno just my penny worth. Top effort! 💪🏻

Dam that’s very unfortunate Ryan If that was my business All cars must have a oil & filter changed before any remapping takes place so you can inspect the old oil and filter before you tune it Keep us posted on how you get on.

I know this movie, I've seen it before. Literally have an ix35 in for a service, took it for a road test and it's locked up. No loss of oil pressure or any signs of death prior. It's a common issue with the 2.4 theta engines, failure to clean oil galleries during manufacture causes the mains to fail. Hyundai don't want to know about it and want $26 grand to replace it.

Watched it to the end. Didn't expect you taking a bath on the second car, bloody nightmare. Personally, and I don't own a business, definitely not a successful businessman, but with the van I would've put a deal on the table. Clearly the van had a bad history, everyone can see that, and the owner stands to take a bath. I would've offered to fit, at a subsidised cost, an engine sourced by the owner. There would be no liability to you as he sourced it, he would get it fitted cheaper by experts, you would've lost ramp time as a cost to you, but the upshot is PR, because like you said no one wants to see someone ripped off. He had a dud engine to start with, so he's better off and he's had it fitted by people that actually know lefty loosy righty tighty

Playing devil advocate here, why should DD loose money and time for something they did cause?
@matteightytwo
@matteightytwo 2 года назад
@@AlphaSierra101 bear in mind the owner would buy and source the engine (he needed one anyway), DD would be offering a subsidised rate to fit the engine. So they wouldn't lose monetarily, they just wouldn't gain as much. What they would gain is goodwill with the customer, and the community as they're supporting the community and fantastic PR. Like I said though, I don't run a business, no one should ever leave me in charge of a business 😁

@@matteightytwo I totally agree it’s good for PR etc but I have a feeling once bitten twice shy on the customers part may occur. I don’t envy his battle he may face with the garage to get it replaced. I am currently having an issue with VW just to get my radio fixed under warranty would hate for it to have been an engine.

Years ago I had a 53 plate 330d M-Sport and while having its MOT during the emissions test a spark plug blew through the engine so I got that phone call. My car was in perfect condition in and out but things happen. The garage said I needed a complete rebuild so they kindly said if I pay for the parts they will do the Labour for nothing. I got the car back in perfect condition, I was so pleased and grateful.

Was at your shop yesterday with my mates A3. But yeah, I have this problem now. Bought a 2.0tdi B7 SE, exactly 3 weeks to this day. No reverse/ reg lights. Hole in flexi exhaust, bad oil leak but changed glow plugs and valve seal. Next is oil filter/ cooler housing seal, lose bolt from bell housing to block and now major issue with bearings on the pinion rack due to 2nd gear popping out, which has been quoted roughly £500 and advised to do clutch too so looking at 1k just for gearbox resolved and I've done less than 200 miles. I bought from a private dealer too and can say I will never go private AGAIN. Spent £260 in 2 weeks! 😭

Wow that was thrown together and sold. As a customer I would never expect anything for free. My view is if it blows while a reputable (like yourselves) tuner is tuning it that's my issue as I've asked you to do it. If I ask you to inspect thats my labour bill and up to me to take it up with the old company who sold it me. As for the chap with a p45 what a numpty.
