I liked the scene where Rockwell Torrey calls Egan Powell on the telephone line and has him bunk out for the night, and after Egan says he can do that, Rockwell hangs up, looks at his favorite nurse and asks “Maggie?” She smiles up at him, toes off one of her shoes, and the screen fades to black. Now that’s some good filmmaking. The audience understood in 1965 that there was going to be some serious lovemaking without having it spelled out. This is one of my favorite scenes from an epic movie.

Exactly how Hollywood lost the art of the love scene with this type of golden standard to aspire to is a mystery.

Another underrated film. Great ensemble cast, and Patricia Neal had a certain sex appeal. Another brilliant soundtrack from Jerry Goldsmith.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for In Harm's Way. On a certain level it's not very good. But I do like how it's more a drama than a war movie. Maybe even a soap opera. But John Wayne handles himself real well just playing a naval officer dealing as much with human issues as with fighting a war.

Pat was SO "southern sultry;" not the hottest thing going just based on model looks (though she wasn't chopped liver) but, man, she looks like she knew her way around a man, in several ways...in a wholesome sort of sensual way, that is. She looks like she wouldn't mind being in charge from time to time...always nice.

@teller1290
@teller1290 6 лет назад
yes, it takes thought and recognizing that your audience is expecting some class, pizzazz, style in their love / sensual / suggestive scenes. Audiences wanted to be able to show their kids these movies about their parents' generation without being embarrassed, and Hollywood knew that. My late dad once said that he didn't think the nation would survive the 1960s generation and the damage they would cause to society and likely to their offspring in mis-teaching them from the crap they had poured into their heads by red profs in '60s.

19 years between them in real life. being 56 and single...it makes me smile a little bit! I'd commit a crime or two to hit it off with a 37-year old Patricia Neal. (She was 39 in the flick here and Duke was 58, though I suspect his character is supposed to be maybe 10 years younger than that.)

Patricia had enough heat for both of them. I recall seeing when I was a lad in "Hud," with paul Newman. I didn't know what an "older woman fantasy" was until that movie. Always would've loved to see her as the older woman in The Graduate but with the accent and general tone of that (overrated, imo) flick..., Anne probably better for it, esp since she was playing rather discombobulated - not a good look for Pat, imo. But she really gave off smoke, rather naturally, imo.

My dad, joined at 17 was a boiler tender, (two bronze stars), was on the USS Libra in the Pacific. He never knew where the ship was.. He was on a landing craft duty, picking up the pieces of the dead marines on the beach. . After that experience, he acquired a rating and spent the rest of the war below decks, hoping not to get torpedo. The Libra was a beautiful ship, former a merchant marine vessel. It was much better than the liberty ship he spent half the war on. Later, he became the first Senior Chief in the Navy, retired as Master Chief. Patricia Neal, one of kind.

always heard that they moved that cabin from the point near CPO housing area on Ford Island near where the old USS Tennessee was tied up on 12/7. Then, for reasons I don't know, they moved this cabin from there to the nearby (on same tiny island) "Nob Hill" neighborhood where naval officers lived then and in 1965 and now. Those houses were built in the '20s and I bet they were all occupied for filming, or Preminger just felt those houses were a bit too much for the transient nature of Rock's situation that he may have been trying to convey. Anyway, interesting stuff and I'm not sure if the cabin is still there of it was moved back. It must be somewhat out of place! See a book entitled "The Children of Battleship Row," for insight into neighborhood in year, months and days leading up to attack. Fascinating , brief book written by 70-yr old in 2000 about her waking up on 12/7 and lounging on lanai, at age 10, when attack began...and she lived in home (then called "Quarters T") 300 yards from USS Tennessee! Her dad was a major in charge of Ford Island security.

Wow... John Wayne just called-in a literal Booty Call. And the look on his face he throws at soon-to-be-very-sore Maggie after he hangs up is what we call in the Lit world as, "foreshadowing". Not really, but the joke fits. Get er' done, Mister Wayne! BTW... Patrica Neal had bad posture in this scene.

If you watch her early roles - like the famous "The Fountainhead", where she wears a strapless gown, you will notice that she had very rounded shoulders - what was the beginning of a curvature of the spine that I think they try to mask here - like with the black sweater. Camera angles too. But, the point is, these weren't two "pretty" people but two mature adults without a glamorous facade. I do have to say though that his "Come hither" glance was blinding.

yeh, I always thought that was a part of the reason Preminger shot in black and white. if so, it really made sense because not until years after I saw first back in the 1970s as a kid did I realize it wasn't shot in 1950s. Mid-50s would have been perfect for this one. Neal would've been even hotter and Duke would have been more in his physical prime. This was one yr after his lung procedure. 58 pretty old for a USN Capt in those days, but he pulled it off okay.

real question in that outdoor scene is why she isn't at least going thru the motions of standing and rendering a half decent hand salute, even if with a wry smile.
