You younger people have to know how massive this show used to be. This show became the number one comedy in the United States quickly. This show played the latest hip hop music of the day which helped make hip hop number one in the world and that's why kids all over the planet now dress up with the baseball caps on backwards and wear the jerseys. The dancing was the best on TV and their comedy was so funny and different that to this day nothing has come even close to being as funny as them. Nothing. But, the biggest thing that show did was that they became legends on a network that was barely beginning called FOX. This show, Married With Children and The Simpsons made FOX what it is today. Those shows brought people to FOX that was competing against the top three networks CBS, NBC, and ABC that had been around for decades and In Living Color still kicked the other networks butts and created big stars like Jim Carey, Damon Wayans, Jennifer Lopez, Rosie Perez, and Jamie Fox who were unknowns at that time and all became famous rich actors.
I watched all those shows, LOVED In Living Color and the Fly Girls. Forgot all about the FOX network. Good history recap. And yes it was huge in getting Hip Hop out to the world. It was a groundbreaking show. And Hilarious.
Being from old school of tap, ballet and jazz lessons when the fly girls hit TV, they immediately caught my eye, I had always envisioned that kind of dancing, and here it was, and it was SO cool!
Her dance background was not technical dance like jazz. There is an interview where she explains that she came in as a street dancer but the girls were technically trained dancers so she had to mix her street hip hop moves with their technical jazz moves.
I honestly didn't know Rosie Perez was a choreographer; I just thought she was an actress. It wasn't until I saw a biopic about The Boys ("Dial My Heart") and learned that she choreographed the moves for their videos that I learned about her dance teaching skills. What a super-talented woman!!!
I loved the whole show but I really watched to learn dance moves and get fashion ideas from the Fly Girls. Man how I would imagine being one of the Fly Girls.♥️
Brings back so many memories as a teenager. My DREAM job was to be a fly girl. ❤️. Beautiful, strong, healthy, talented...can’t ask for much more. Closest I ever came to being a fly girl was becoming a Zumba instructor 😂 Fortunately they have a fly girl 101 course every year at the annual Zumba convention and it’s always one of my favorite classes (taught by a former fly girl) 😁
I grew up on In Living Color and watched it religiously. I've seen White Men Can't Jump easily over 100 times too. I love Rosie. She's the cutest. And those two big beautiful....dimples.
Ah, A time when we could laugh at what was funny! This show and others like it, showed that America had changed in a huge way. People were no longer separated by race and we saw how similar we all are. I was a makeup artist in NYC in the late 80's and through the 90's and at least half of the films were either starring black people or created and produced by them. People were not on edge and really did get along perfectly. Boy have things changed .
I remember watching an interview with Keenan shortly after the show first aired. He was asked what's with making fun of certain groups of people? He replied " We're not making fun of them. We're making fun of how stupid being prejudice is. Have you listened to the words of the theme song with Heavy D? Pretty much sums it up" ... fkn epic. I miss that show
Everybody I talk to they say I sound like Rosie Perez I'm like I get that alot from people I grew up in the Bronx and Paterson NJ I live in Massachusetts been here since 1991 and still have my NJ NY accent
I didn't realize that they were sucha novelty. I had been out in yhe club scene since the 80xs when this show came on, and that was all normal stuff that i saw in the clubs every weekend.
I am a In Living Color fan and the Fly Girls and the music they danced to for all five seasons in the beginning, middle and into the show. I read somewhere online years back in the 2010's, that in early 1991, it was announced that the dance troupe The Fly Girls, will dance to the pop, rap, hip-hop, R&B music they danced to during Fox's In Living Color. Keenen wanted to do a spin-off of the Fly Girls, and came up in a expanded form with a new hour-long TV show with Kick It With The Fly Girls, an In Living Color spin-off. Emmy-winning In Living Color has featured The Fly Girls mix West Coast cool with East Coast streetsmarts and wear lots of attractive hard- and software while doing so. Keenen's brother, disc jockey Shawn Wayans (SW.1), was/would have will serve as the show's co-host and was to MC'ed. Shawn envisioned them making pop albums, and them doing dancing and have them do concert tours, and shows and even lauching their own fashion line. The proposed show only got as for holding auditions for dancers in New York City, New York, and Los Angeles, California. That would have been a huge hit. That nationally syndicated show will showcase, and looks like it would have been something like out of Yo! MTV Raps with the Fly Girls dancing, but instead of sketches, there would feature music videos and have live performances from "top performing rap and hip-hop artists and new acts". The energetic 6 member dance team performs during breaks between comedy sketches/skits on In Living Color. created and will produce Kick It With the Fly Girls. Kick It With the Fly Girls was supposed to air nationally in syndication. It wasn't picked up. This would have premiered sometime during the 3rd season (1991-1992) of In Living Color, as the article mentioned "6 Fly Girls." Nonetheless, the troupe's bid for a syndicated spin-off TV program, Kick It With the Fly Girls, flamed out. After producing a sizzle reel and shopping it round at the annual National Association of Television Program Executives conference in early 1991, the plug was pulled despite getting commitments from affiliate stations across 56 % of the country. However, energy was still poured into turning the Fly Girls into a singing group.

I bet even today all of those fly girls can smoke damn near anyone on the dance floor. You dont forget all those moves and rhythms. The show was revolutionary for its time and crossed so many borders...it was a hot topic in high school for the comedy sketches, the music introduced, and the dancers. ILC replaced SNL for me when it came out, everyone was so ridiculously talented!
That's becasue this was recorded a while ago, she's on a show with Kaley Cuocco called The Flight Attendant now and trust me she doesn't look like this any more, she is showing her age.
+ This is weird...How are they talking about The Fly Girls without even mention of the most famous one? Jennifer Lopez! That's how J.Lo got her big start in the business. As a Fly Girl.
Yeeaahh....but she didn't appear until later seasons. I think they're focusing on the origins of the Fly Girls. Like how they got started and all. I mean they only got 3 people for this video lol. I guess they weren't trying to put the spotlight on just one specific Fly Girl, but more on the Fly Girls as a whole.
Because they are insecure with the immense success of jlo. Rosie even released a book dishing jlo telling the world that she is responsible for the success of jlo. She wants a credit for jlo's success. So insecure. I didnt even know about fly girls or in living colors not becoz of jlo. And now they want to revive the show becoz jlo is so succesful out of it and they thought it will gain momentum.
Jennifer Lopez might be the most famous Fly Girl but she wasn't one of their best dancers. That distinction was for Lisa Marie Todd and Carrie Ann Inaba.
I know that i could bust a move so i didn't need to be like a fly girl i was a BOSS LADY because when you and your partner was the only one on the Dance Floor and when I got on the Dance Floor the Dance Floor always be crowded after I bust my move
Soul Train didn't have a dance troupe performing choreographed routines. The Fly Girls are the exact equivalent to The Solid Gold Dancers. Soul Train was the equivalent to American Bandstand.
This went triple scankium🤯 Just based off the WOMEN....THEY'VE EARN THIER HOE BADGE SHO N'UFF LADIES ARE """"HEAVEN .ON .EARTH """" DON'T GET IT TWISTED!
Well, who do you consider "hot" that does the same caliber of what they do (although no group of chicks do this). Also, they were "Fly", which is a whole different kind of hot....basically it's a Black Thang, you wouldn't understand (hey, that's a 90's quote also....cool)
