Agreed, the 80s stuff, while still good, had an edgy for the sake of edgy kind of vibe to it. Really hit a nice stride in the early 90s. Could probably apply this to the music scene as well. Dunno what happened in the late 90s, everything kind of got homogenized and started to all look and sound the same.
@@dobees8183 fact but if the right offer came up theyd no doubt be into it. Theyre also super busy so there definitely highly selective what they work on at this point
Although Marlon Wayans was never in a movie alongside Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey both started in the 1988 movie "Earth Girls Are Easy". That was two years before *In Living Color* made its debut on FOX.
@@dobees8183 I'm sure they would now.. They are prety mellow all of them now a days.. Jim finally came off his "hippy" high off of dmt trip.. Hes all hippy loving now hehe, not as bad as he used to be, like a tree huggin hippy. But as for movies? How would one make one now a days. You would need that crude "boomer" humor in the old conservative racist era. When it was ok to make fun of these things. Now Both cultures would cancel out each other. Most that crude humor was thanks to the boomer era when it was "unchecked". I wouldn't say it was a good era, prety bad in general for non white people, was it is still a current issue in 2020.
This show produced more talent than any show I can think of. Jim. Jamie. The Wayans and all of the movies they've done. David Allen Grier was so talented. Kelly Coffield? So damn talented. And if I'm not mistaken, fly girl Jennifer Lopez landed up being the richest of them all at over $400 million. Hell, Tommy Davidson got a ton of work after this show. I seriously can't think of a show that produced more success than In Living Color.
SNL. Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, David, Spade, Chris, Farley, and like 50 more But you’re right this show In living color produced amazing stars in relation to its budget. Such a good show!
It seems more than anything from what I see, Jamie might have missed some rehearsals. Notice how he had to look to at the foot work to see where the others were going. He was out of sync for not practicing. I saw some people with dance routine, cheerleading and cardio kickboxing classes some members screw up timing like that.
poopngriddles You don't think some gay people were unhappy about this when it came out? People have always been offended by one thing or another. It's not a new human emotion
Jason Whitlock mybad bro I read wrong I thought you said it’s not funny. Notice how I didn’t delete or edit my comment. I’m not too ashamed to say I was wrong.
When Keenan and Damon were still in school they would sometimes go around the city and just improvise as a gay couple, just to get reactions out if ppl. 😂😂 I would love to see some of those throwbacks 👌
This show was classic and groundbreaking! This sketch was hysterical! They don't make them like this anymore. We'll never see fantastic TV like this ever again! The 90s was the last great decade. Thanks for posting this!
so what youre saying is any decade in the future wont be great. what about technology of today, let alone of the future? i doubt 1990 would match 2400 (if global warming is taken care of)
@@centralprocessingunit4988 Wow! You totally misunderstood my statement. Being "politically correct" has killed modern-day humor. I love living in the 21st century, but TV comedy shows in the 90's were incredibly funny. You have to be streaming nowadays to get good current comedy shows
Because what people are doing now is a reflection of that? All we are seeing now is bigotry and raycism exposed. Let us bless the CELLPHONE! It was like it is now THEN, but society had gotten to used to it without RECEIPTS.
Dessert Storm...L.A. Riots...O.J. Simpson...the decline of MC Hammer for not being hard enough...Do The Right Thing...Gangsta Rap & Police Brutality...Mixed/Biracial people not allowed to be themselves...Controversy over Ellen coming out as a Lesbian...plenty of unhappiness to go around then too.
Amazing talent and performance. Where did this excellence go in film and TV? Why are we now so restricted in the what's permitted in humor? Why are we not allowed to laugh at ourselves anymore? Who took away "the best medicine?"
This was one of the best comedy shows of all times, especially Marlon, Waylon , David Grier, Tommy Davidson, they were all great, they always take the best shows off the air,
😂LIVING COLOR WAS OFF THE CHAIN, THEY SAY AND DID ANYTHING TO GET A LAUGH. LOL. I LOVE THAT SHOW. YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR WHEN WATCHING THEM NEVER WILL BE ANOTHER SHOW LIKE IT, THANKS FOR THE LAUGHTER. 😊
Um the picture kept moving out of frame and shaking so it was kind of obvious. Wait a minute is this Stevie wonder commenting. Man I am a big fan if you and you tried to hide behind your screenname. Lol
OMG, I fell off thhe sofa laughing so much....Oh my, this clip truly made my day....Sunshine came out again after starting to be a gloomy one....Ttnx so much for the terribly outrageously funny clip..😆😆😆😄😄😄🙃🙃🙃
I don't think this sketch is that great. It's so stereotypical, and only people who think this is how all gay people act think it's funny. I wouldn't say offensive, just lame.
After watching this everything is canceled lol. It was definitely simpler times in the 90's. You all know its unfortunate how things are today because the same ppl that would cancel this in current times are the same that laughed hard af at this but now ppl are too sensitive nowadays!
A great skit in its time frame, and very good, great, actors, pulling it off! Now that acceptance is pretty much granted, or people don’t even really care too much about the lifestyle it doesn’t seem like gay community is content with that. Are people ever satisfied?
Gustavo R. Dreyer you can nowadays to, there’s no law in the constitution against it. Even our current President did that everyday before he got elected and it didn’t stop him from winning
That, and the fact that gays being in the military isn't as taboo as it once was. Now, trans people in the military, there's a fresh, new angle that sadly will never be taken because of overwhelming political correctness...unless someone says, "Enough is enough" and does it.
Not only that but these stereotypes are of the time where this behavior was counter culture and not annoying. Homeboy above said it best. You would be more creative critiquing women in combat roles or how people who are trans sign up vs. Soldiers who are trans post service. This sketch was just an exageration of of the fears they had about fays in combat when in reality they been under their nose the whole time. Super sad newer takes of diversity and lgbt culture in the military is too taboo for the glass bone paper skin hollywood fellatiators.
Bruh this is hilarious, Between Marlon being extra wit it, Jamie not trying to be to gay, all stiff and Jim nailing it on the head, I can't stop laughing 😂😂
You hit each one right on the head ! It was a great show. Too bad theses and many more like it have disappeared. Likely not to be seen again. Be well, JB
Did Marlon Wayans come in later in the show? I was too young to really have noticed. But now that I think of it this might be the first time I recall him being on this show. It now seems insane that he wasn’t on any other episodes I saw. So I’m assuming he came on later towards the end & that the show ended shorty after he joined the cast. Maybe that’s when the Wayans brothers got their own TV show or when “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking your Juice in the Hood” came out. 🤷🏼♀️idk. But I just now remembered that my dad used to forbid us girls to watch In Living Color. My big sisters had to sneak it by whipping out the tiny tv they had put aside when it came on at night & sometimes I got to watch it too.
Marlon before this planned to go to college (he was still in high school and had a scholarship). His mom said NOPE....take your a** out there and make some money with your brothers 🤣🤣🤣 he tells this in several interviews.
dave idmarx Fuck no, Lil Wayne real name is Dwayne Carter while Marlon is related to Shawn, Damon, Keenan Ivory, and Kim Wayne (his real brothers and sister)
@@garydmercer Television makes fun of heterosexual males all the time... they even do it TODAY and more frequently than before, a great example would be the futurama snu snu scene, it portraits straight guys as simple minded, sex obsesed and disposable. And EVERYBODY agrees that IT IS a great joke, even the series MAIN DEMOGRAPHIC. The joke itself (this one)is not even that offensive, it just portraits them in a flamboyant way.
I wouldn't read too much into the meaning of the skit. The show did all kinds of over the top characterizations and stereotypes. Even if it was unflattering, it was done for comedy's sake, not hatred.
To be openly homophobic? This wasn't put on tv yesterday this was put on in the early 90s. At a time where it wasn't uncommon for gay people to be beat in the street for being gay, only a few years earlier the government ignored HIV because it was a gay man's disease, the don't ask don't tell policy was that you can serve in the military but if someone tells us you are gay we will throw you out no matter how long you have been serving and no matter what you have done for your country. In 1996 years after this congress passed an act DENYING federal recognition to any legal union between gay people. I don't see the humor as this was just pushing false stereotypes that were used to mock and belittle gay people. The show had a habit of doing that.
@@red2977 Never once did I state all homosexuals behaved in such a manner. Yet, some do. And this is funny. All people can be made fun of, and they should be. Keeps people from taking themselves too seriously.
@@red2977 Gay people are homophobic about themselves. They make fun of other people just as much, if not worse, than people who make fun of them. Yet when gay people get made fun of, it's an all-stop cancel culture protest. Get over yourselves. You're gay, we get it and nobody cares. Just live your life.
@@kippywylieyeah, from conservatives saying it's promoting pedophilia or destroying our families or some bull. I personally would love to see more people having this much lighthearted fun around sexuality again, that's how we heal these societal wounds. Signed, A Gay™️
@@adjoint_functor conservatives havent changed much. If anything, conservatives have become much more compromising, so if this kind of skit could be aired in the 90s, its definitely not cause of conservatives its not aired anymore. Its the liberals that have gone nuts and turned into zealots, creating an environenment where everyone is walking on eggshells
I remember when I first saw this skit. My first reaction was, what are gays? I have learned a lot since then. I grew up with an uncle who was gay and a cousin who who's a lesbian. I loved this show and Whose Line is it Anyway? This skit is funny, too. D.A.G. was always so deadpan, which made it funnier.
Yes, agree, JCarrey showed he was way above everyone, dance better, acted better, gayish but not stereotype gay like Wayans abd others, was to the key.
David Allen Grier here on Living Color was one of the very best comedians at being able to keep a straight face through a scene that was hilariously funny. Him and Phil Hartman. Two super funny and underrated great comedians.
Jim Carrey was totally into the dance at the end of the vid, knew every step and was throwing in the flourishes! He was having so much fun with this whole skit. 💜
@@iIO_OIi Actually yes really. Now since everything is so PC and there’s so much sensitivity from the LGBT+++ with STRAIGHT actors doing Gay Roles they would go up all in arms this skit was done again today by a bunch of straight actors.
@@EvenStevenSays, I am not saying no one would retaliate or that there would be no complaints, or no discussion about the repercussions, just that a "societal heart attack" is an over exaggeration, a few people will have their complaints and but I wouldn't really call that anything new or unusual, nor is reacting to complaints of some of your audience members (ie pulling an episode/skit) a new concept either, it's not like media was invented yesterday, it's been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, and social repercussions almost certainly predate humanity, and certainly have been around as long as civilization at the very least- granted that's a separate point than rather if society would get a heart attack over this or not, but just saying that there's nothing new here, just a different skin. I personally wouldn't be more than mildly annoyed at most, and probably just comment (unoffended) about potential repercussions and then forget about it at most, to some people it may look like I freaked out (I don't know how) but it really wouldn't be much of a stressor for me, some extremely sensitive people may think I'm overreacting in that case though, but they'll basically think anyone that doesn't agree with them is extreme in some way or another or complaining too much ect, these people are often quick to anger on minor passing critiques on things they like (I make no claim of being a saint or perfect in this regad, really no one is, we are just human after all). I say all this as a gay asexual/some-who-could-care-less-about-doing-the-do-in-my-lifetime, my genderfluid gay brother is even less quick to offend, at least with a skit like this (albeit he's relatively more conservative than me despite fluctuating between identifying as male & female... 😐). My advice, spend a little less time on the internet and a little more time talking to people in person (ironic advice coming from me...) you get to know these different sorts of people and even if they still seem crazy, you'll probably see that like anyone else they have a variety of temperaments and such, there's loud people and there's everyone else in any group, and never an absolute consensus, although the loud ones certainly make it feel like there is... Anyways this is going on too long now, I feel like I'm loosing my point, have a nice day.
They should do it again for that EXACT reason!!!😂😁😁 I'm gay and i didn't find it offensive Because i'm not that sensitive. People nowadays just take jokes too seriously And i'm honestly so sick of political correctness.
@@mikehayes1173 Pining for those days is like saying it was cool in the 50's when no one apologized for being openly or ignorantly racist. Sometimes (not always) an apology is merited or, wait for it, a sign of growth and maturity. The gang at IASIP (easily one of the most offensive shows out there) never see any material as "going too far", for example. Except that people started to take their satire as legit opinion and they felt the need to make it VERY clear in their work what was what. Even then one of the creators felt remorse for an episode where the mentally disabled were used as a joke. He wasn't badgered into it, he did it freely and of his own will. Also, we forget that shows like In Living Color and Married WIth Children (among others) engendered tons of controversy in the day. Episodes were pulled, censored, apologized for, taken to court, etc. There is nothing new going on here, just more ways to find out that it's going on.
And nowadays it is far more accepted than 30 years ago. I couldn't imagine how anyone would get through it unscathed back then.
