Regarding Ellen Corby: she was such a sweet, spunky little gal. She could play that role of Grandma so very well, but my favorite performance of hers that not only makes me laugh even now, and at the same time is such a heartwarming delight for me was when she guest starred on the original The Addams Family television series as Ted Cassidy’s character, Lurch the butler’s Mamma. That first scene where she arrives at the front door of the mansion is priceless. Lurch couldn’t even open the door as he always otherwise did as he could peer out and see that it was his Momma ringing the doorbell. So Gomez answers the door for him instead, and the first thing out of Elen’s mouth is “where is my Sonny?” Then when she sees Lurch, all that sepulchral-like demeanor he always exhibited when answering the door any other time just falls to the floor with a sudden resounding crash as it were. He lit up like a veritable Christmas tree in a split second, cried out in that deep, slow voice of his “Mamma” while Elen then replied, “Sonny,” and as Ted was near to seven feet tall while Elen was so tiny, she grabs him around the lower waste to hug him while he instinctively grabs the air directly in front of him right above her head. However, it was when she was leaving at the end of the episode that for me is the most memorable, as well as funny as Lurch in saying good bye to her picks her up like a tiny little doll and hugs her. For me , that is one forever unforgettable scene! You could feel the vibes throughout that episode in any scene she and Ted had together that they must have gotten along really well behind the scenes just as much, and even more as they did portraying those two characters in front of the camera and crew!
There was real love and respect, between all cast members. There was a special love and respect, between Ellen Corby Will Greer. This show was about love.
I love the series from the beginning. I always like this series it reminded me of my family of generations now almost all are parents ,grandparents. Aunts, uncles are all gone. I’m now in my 70’s my cousin died a few years ago and she was in her 80’s. The one thing that is different is the reunions. Holidays and your regular meals . Most of the younger relatives aren’t that close any more what a shame. Bring back the Waltons please.
I remember her from "I Remember Mama" back in the late 40's early 50's. She had a long career. One of the last Movies I remember in was "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" Always perfect for "The Waltons" . RIP my fine lady. You deserve it. 💙
I remember her telling the story about the character Grandma Walton , she told Earl Hamner Jr. look you have a very sweet family but every character being so nice would be too sappy , I'm gonna add a little edge to the show,....and she did ( love the way she said ' Good Lord ' !!!
I loved The Waltons and Ellen was so good as Grandma. All of the actors and actresses on the show had excellent chemistry and that's why it is so timeless and special.
In the scene of "It's a Wonderful Life" (after George and Mary get married), when George is distributing the money they received as wedding gifts at the Bailey Building and Loan, Ellen Corby appears very briefly asking for money.
@@thowen1988 That wonderful line, "Can I have $17.50?" will live on, and, on, and, on in the memory of Ellen's fans!! In the role of a deaf/mute in " Pocket full of Miracles" , with Glen Ford, and Bette Davis she wowed us without uttering a word.
We’ve been watching reruns on our streaming service of the Walton’s. I have a renewed appreciation for this great TV series. Never to be repeated. Ellen Corby was such a great character actor. They can all be proud of the work they did.
Rest in Peace, Ellen Corby. On one of the great shows of all time, The Waltons. You Ellen and Will Geer are greatly missed. I have been watching episodes of The Waltons. Brings back a lot of great memories of a great show. Ellen and Will were an integral part of The Waltons. God Bless you, Ellen and Will.
She was in a movie called “I Remember Mama,” I love that movie and watch it often. She was also in the original movie, Angels in the Outfield.” Such a beautiful treasure.
She was certainly busy before The Waltons--did a lot of episodic TV, including The Addams Family and Honey West. I've seen her in It's a Wonderful Life, I Remember Mama, Caged, Vertigo, and William Castle's Macabre. And let's not forget her gossipy turn at the end of Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte.
One of the most AMAZING parts of The Waltons was that both Grandpa (Will Geer) and Grandma (Ellen Corby) were both gay!! Great actors. One of the things wrong with this video is it only looked at the roles they played on The Waltons and did not show the hundreds of great roles each of them had played over the years in movies, television and the activism that each one followed for the betterment of their communities and the world.
She really was wonderful and so dear to everybody. We all know somebody in our lives just like 'old Esther Walton' as Grandpa would say. Sad to look back though........
Ellen had a great role in I Remember Mama, a small but amusing role in Caged, and she did a fantastic dramatic turn in a Climax! episode called Trial by Fire. It’s here on RU-vid, I highly recommend it.
Loved her! But who was she in her younger years? Would have been nice to have a full tribute throughout her life. If you go to 3:22 in the segment (and other parts where you can put her and Richard Thomas side by side) you will see a pic of her and Richard Thomas together. They look very much alike! I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, but, wow!
Other than the Waltons the first time I noticed Miss Ellen Corby in another movie was about ten yrs ago. She played a woman prisoner in jail not sure of the yr but must have been in the 30s or 40s ! I'm sure she played many different rolls throughout her career. But in my opinion she was a great actress.!
I watched her on an old Johnny Carson show last night and she said before the Walton's, she was a stripper. That getting in the movies and shows was hard. And proceeded how she got on the Waltons. It was great.
the very year will geer saved her life he lost his . How sad that must have made her to know that she had to go on with out seeing him everyday . RIP ellen hansen corby you are missed .
These are just pics, and even then mostly Hollywood studio pics. You might be a bit surprised if you were to search a little bit about her personal life. Just sayin’.....gotta love Hollywood. Will Geer’s personal life is pretty interesting too.
