Despite being New Zealand’s second largest city, Christchurch only has one gay bar.
But even the only gay bar in town has faced backlash for posting transphobic messaging on their Facebook page.

One of the reasons I was glad to leave and never look back. I don't understand choosing to live in chch if you are LGBT when life is so much easier in wellington (and I'm guessing Auckland?).

It's just a question of who is going to step up and open a place like that. If there's not anyone with the time, money, and desire to do it, it's not happening

Assuming the council would not kick up a fuss about the licence. I know Westminster and other councils in London have been doing that for years.

Like everywhere in the world there is racism and homophobia, that being said New Zealand is tied with Denmark for being 4th in the world when it comes to queer-friendly travel. New Zealand is 7th in the world for racial equality behind the Nordics, Canada and the Netherlands. On a personal anecdote the rural areas of the South Island, the region of Hawkes Bay, and the region of Bay of Plenty are more conservative. Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin are my personal recommendations to say in as they are all gay friendly cities. Auckland being the 2nd most diverse city in the world and Wellington being a city with sizable rainbow communities. (Especially around Newtown and Central Wellington).

When people cannot express themselves without being met with abuse (the guy being told "get out of the road you gay c*nt" when holding hands with another guy), it is not a safe space. Queer people do not require coddling (and often do not want it), they simply want to be treated with respect as any other person would

Is a person asking for " coddling " if they just want to be free to be themselves like everyone else ? If people are expected to ( quite rightly ) work for a living and pay taxes then shouldn't they have everything that everybody else has ?
