Rugby players don't slam into other players with the same amount of force, as all of the head and body padding makes American football players feel like they can (and should) hit as hard as they can. The typical tackle g-force in American football is almost 3x what's seen in rugby.

For future trips to stadium events, consider getting a clear bag. Not sure if there are any clear designer bags. But a lot of stadiums and other events venues do not allow bags that are not see-through.
