Hey! 👋 This is an original song where I tried to blend together all my biggest musical influences - Lord of the Rings, Miyazaki, Celtic folk music, and jazz, with a little deep house spice.
"In Our Bones" is a multi-instrumental original cinematic folk song with vocals, guitar, mandolin, saxophone, Irish flute, cittern, bodhrán, violin, drums, and more. It tries to tap into some ancestral connections that I feel in my bones.
I feel called to make music that reconnects us with the Earth 🌎, and I'm hatching an album project. If you want to go along for the ride, the best thing to do is sign up for email updates:

This song is the most complex arrangement I've ever done, with around ~270 audio tracks in my DAW. Let me know if you want to see a "making of" video!
All songwriting, performing, recording, mixing, mastering, filming and editing done by yours truly. Filmed on a Pixel 4a and MBP webcam, and edited in Resolve.
Thanks for watching - it's really great to have you here! 👋 ❤️

LYRICS
Far away
To the east
There’s a place
Locked away
In memory
Round the fire we lift our voices
Into the sky
Drifting high
With the smoke
At the end we lay down
We feel it in our bones
We feel it in the stones
We feel it in the rain
We feel it in the moon
We feel it in the death
Of all that we have known
A future we have grown
O keida se dalmo
Fre da ne nas to
Frana se kano
Freyajo kre das frojyaa
Frii da naso krejam fridagandi
So shi kre dalmo
Enter at the gate of dawn
The past is gone
But we’re not lost
We’re just adrift
On the summer thunder
And so we say
Érathen taoh terath miç nuvenáth
Friya muith éragathiç niranath do
We feel it in our bones
We feel it in the stones
We feel it in the rain
We feel it in the moon
We feel it in the death
Of all that we have known
A future we have grown
Tired we stumble through the darkness
The fire in the deep it keeps us warm
Upon these misty shores
Where do we still belong
We’re told it’s with the stars
Now that the day is done
We see the sun
Sink below
The shining sea
At the end we lay down

As a former musician, I always had the dream of moving to a house in the forest with a playground of instruments and simply creating whatever I wanted. Your video says: Do it! 😁. Thank you for your inspiration!💜🤗

@@DevinMooers Honest answer that musicians understand: I thought I was leaving music behind forever because I had nothing left to say musically and what I was doing was getting on my nerves, but in the last few months the music came along back on its own in a new way. So... who knows :-)... I'll just watch what happens. The music just seems to bubble out of you and I like your very own expression. :-) Its wonderful to see that. Have a lot of fun creating :-)!

Devin, I have waited for this and I am once blown away. Gorgeous harmonies. And when the percussion sets in this song just has an incredible flow thats creeps blissfully inside your ears and brain. This is absolutely down my valley. I love Loreena McKennitt and this really has some Loreena vibes, but different. This is an incredibly beautiful composition. I just playlisted it. And again your video is wonderfully creative. Glad you came out of your shell to share your talent with all of us. I love your work. Keep it up!

@@DevinMooers I think you might like her music. She is a Canadian Musician with Irish Scottish heritage. She has won several awards and does rather folksy stuff with a love for acoustic instruments of all kinds. She is however not easily cornered into a musical genre, as she draws a lot from other cultures too. So she has a portfolio of mesmerizing songs, that sound partly Celtic, but also African and upbeat at times, dreamy at other times. All songs however have in common, that she is an incredible storyteller as she manages to invoke vivid imagery in her audience. You are however your own brew, just remind me of her at times in the very best way.

IN OUR BONES by Devin Mooers: Reminiscent of a gentle walk in a misty green with Simon & Garfunkel echoing CSN&Y harmonies and dreamlike melodies. Where a free-spirited flute chimes in singing to the sky it’s song of life. Shadowed by a chorus of ancient spirits calling to the muse, beckoning her to bring forth the joy of long-forgotten Irish jigs whose melodic roots are buried deep within the mystical tones of jovial Celtic dance rhythms… PEACE / vOz 😊

A great follow up Devin! Would enjoy seeing you review the tracks in your DAW and how it came together for you. I'm a Bitwig user now, but started out on Cakewalk and passed through Reason and Cubase along the journey. You might also consider adding the lyrics to the description, as my 65 year old ears had a little trouble making out some passages! Well done and good choice to intersperse something original like this!

@@DevinMooers Fantastic, I love how this "pitches you out" as mythology properly does (big fan of Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth - his Hero With a Thousand Faces inspired George Lucas to write Star Wars, a great read if you want to dive deep into the Hero Motif). Two other thoughts, when you get to performing this live, that ending here needs to be well extended where you get the crowd up participating by dancing and you have all the band members forward on stage playing their hearts out! Secondly, once you assemble a body of work and are ready, this song alone should get you booked at any Renaissance Festival! Here's hoping you're getting all the support you can to focus on your music now as you'll quickly realize it can be challenging to keep up with the pace of releases your fans will be hoping for!

@@DevinMooersSeeing that this piece is made into a music video but isn’t a video on all the platforms you’re presenting this piece on, cinematic doesn’t necessarily make sense to me. When I see cinematic, I think of a movie so although this video fits that description, I’m unsure if the music itself does. However, “Multi-instrumental” and “folk” does fit perfectly.
