As a therapist I see this every day. The younger generation is really struggling with self-worth issues, not knowing their place in life, feeling lost, alone and worthless. In a world where it has never been easier to connect with people, no one feels connected. Unfortunately I think this is a systemic issue. We’ve built an individualistic world where no one has the mandate to tell anyone else how to act, what to do or who to be. So the kids growing up (that are in desperate need of guidance) get nothing. Imagine growing up today not knowing who you are and only getting the answer “you can be anyone you want”, that is not helpful, it might come from a good place but it´s not helpful. Social media has corrupted what we think is normal. The fear of being canceled or called out has made people inactive and evil wins when good people do nothing. Parents, talk to your children, make sure they know their own worth, guide them and teach them, be a paragon of what you want your kids to grow up to be.
@TimW668
@TimW668 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I definitely agree that technology and social media is a huge culprit now days. I’m a retired police officer and I was also a crisis negotiator and CIT officer for many years. It’s amazing that we can video chat in real time with people on the other side of the planet, but nobody does it. People have stopped communicating with each other. You send a text, it goes unanswered for days or weeks. The younger generations have become socially inept. With that, you get the loneliness and feelings of worthlessness, which eventually grows to suicidal ideations. One thing I told many parents, was to find time with your kids where the phones were put away (can’t take them away from a teenager, or the two year old temper tantrums will happen). Have that time with your kids where they listen to adult conversations, listen to adult problems, and learn adult ways of handling life. Most of these kids spend way too much time talking to their 15 to 18 year old peers, and actually believe their peers are all knowing with more life experience than their parents. Why? Because of time. Interesting fact…I live in the Philippines now and they are beginning to experience the exact same issues. What do Filipino youth have in common with American youth? Phones….no matter how poor the family, cheap Chinese phones and wifi are everywhere. Depressed youth are becoming prevalent too.

I'm a young man in this situation, I've tried talking to my parents about this and they show zero understand or support. They just don't understand today's struggle. My grandfather was born in 1934 to an unwed mother. First ten years of my life, he was my father but we had a terrible relationship. He pushed me away . He was a huge man, said very little. He came across as tough but one or two occasions, i heard him sitting weeping alone. His problems were to do with his young life. Stoicism was important but there was no shortage of troubled men. As a middle aged man, I see it as the ever proliferating number of influencers, role models.. Young guys bombarded with messages as to how they should be. THere needs to be a balance between stoicism and emotional incontinence. The term incel, ive only heard that in the last few years. Girls expectations have gone through the roof. THe marriages ive seen that last the longest are uually couples who were childhood sweethearts.. Is hard to meet people naturally as everyone immersed in their phones . At one time you could be in a bar alone and get into a conversation with someone. Now everyone is in their phones. I m over 50 yet i seek role models I had no father so i seek a fathers guidance now more than ever.. You just have to find people whose message you resonate with,. As for friends, in my 20s i had people as friends who were toxic. I wanted a social life though so i tolerated crap i wouldnt tolerate now. Values change. For me solitude and loneliness are not the same thing. Accepting loneliness as part of the human condition can help. What i really want is that feeling of safety. Id llove a fatherly figure to put his hand around my shoulder. Hed tell me that i am safe and through his example, i will learn to be safe. I believe that lack of a feeling of safety causes so much of the anxiety now.

It's not just young guys, I'm 42 and agree with him. Income down, expenses doubled, health issues, nothing you try makes any difference, no hope in sight. Can't put gas in the car, can't put food on the table, can't make any headway no matter what you try. Once you're behind that's pretty much it.

Similar age, can relate. Single income providing for family of five. Gave up every dream I once had and a 'path' I studied half my life for to chase dollars on a hamster wheel. (For a good cause ... at least our children are getting a solid education and a lot of time / love from their parents.) But I've burned out hard in the last ~2 years doing the work that had to be done - back-to-back months of 80+ hour weeks leading to an eventual mental collapse - primarily for the benefit of everyone around me; between home, growing family needs, and medical issues there is no financial 'getting ahead'. We are still eating, driving, and haven't lost our home, but income crashed about 6 months ago with no immediate solutions; mortgage payments up 25%, insurance costs up 80-100% on the year, along with food, gas, and everything else. Almost everyone around me thinks (apart from loss of income) that I am living in the best of all possible worlds and they can't imagine why I'm having any difficulties. Nothing I can do now but stay on the wheel and try to improve my percentage take from the pie.

I'm naturally introverted and I had the SAME EXACT complaint when i was 22 in 1992. I even posted a video from 1992 on my RU-vid ranting in that similar way! The thing is, SOME OF US don't want any kind of obnoxious people, and not all of us like going out in the public, because of a threat of coming across troublemakers. Some of us like QUIET TIMES. But society don't want that. Their idea of fun is obnoxious and trouble makers and they think it's COOL to get arrested for doing donuts on the streets

Young men struggling is an understatement. It really feels like your suffering is a desire of the world. In the past I saw professional help 3 times over, having listed my despairs to them the response I got was "But you are privileged." (emphasis on are) shocked I couldn't utter the words "If I'm so privileged then why do I so desperately want to die?" The worst year of my life to say the least. The one thing I did was not only soak in knowledge by the fire hose but I expanded the input. (one of the reasons I found real men real style) While there were incredible lows, I've reached the outcome of having a good community to be with. Who aren't crazy. Who listen. Who are kind. Not to mention plenty sage advice. Not that it's all roses, because nothing ever will be, but it sure as hell beats my previous position in life. Life will throw a detour at you. It's beyond unpleasant but if you don't give up, you'll reach your destination. And changing your destination isn't a bad thing either. It's what happened to me.

It's a hard sell telling people "don't give up because it gets better". For starters, it sets up a scenario where their expectations can fail, which can catapult them further into a deeper pit of depression even worse than before. There is a very real possibility that luck may dictate that things inadvertently get worse. For a lot of people, despite their best efforts the situation never improves for them due to factors outside of their control. At least in my view, clinging to hope too hard can be as damaging as having a defeatist attitude. There needs to be a balanced expectation of possible outcomes that doesn't involve overt optimism or pessimism.

I've changed my mind slightly about this after seeing the latest thing people are fighting about on Twitter. This kid is absolutely 100% correct, and the reason he feels this way is because he cares about the world and the people in it. What he's missing is getting himself in a place where he is confident about himself and finding his people. But I guarantee even if he finds himself surrounded with people that love him and stuff, if he still focuses on the world and trying to better it, he will always be miserable and angry to some extent. It's extremely sad but the only way that we can thrive in the world is to ignore everything going on, focus on ourselves and live in a bubble. If you constantly are trying to make the world a better place pushing for it you're going to be driven to misery and potentially madness.

But, I just cant be happy if everyone else is having a shitty time. It feels wrong, like im not fulfilling my purpose. But its hard, and my dreams will probably never come true. Yet, i will try my hardest anyways. I believe in humanities infinite potential, and i dont want it to end here. Evil wins, when good men do nothing. Its very true. We have to be active about things even if it causes us suffering. Even if its just for one person like me in the world.

I also agree that there needs to be some selfishness to focus on yourself and in your own bubble, bc how can you help the world if you cant even help yourself? you cant pour from an empty cup. I can't make a conversation with anyone, never had any friends, I can't make any because I'm boring and empty. No woman ever liked me, always been rejected. I spent almost a decade studying medicine and the pay is extremely low, I need to finish residency for 5 years before I get a good pay. By that time I'll be 35-40 and it'll be too late for most things. I live in a shitty third world country, therapy is non existent, the online therapy is too expensive for me (my monthly income is 400$). I have nothing to live for, I have no interests, no hobbies, my work eats up 12+ hours of my day. I'm going to gym, I dress well, grooming myself but it's just pointless. Life, she's got a knack for throwing some heavy-duty lessons our way. When I was about to become a dad for the first time, I had all these grand schemes for my little one, but he came into this world with a touch of Down syndrome, flipped my whole life on its head, you know? Throw in the towel? Never an option. My boy goes by the name of Abraham, and now, at the ripe age of 16, those initial plans are starting to bloom-just a matter of faith and a ton of patience. Thank you for taking the time to give this subject a broader audience. It's not getting anywhere near the level of attention it deserves. Part of what helped me get through feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness was joining the Marines. When I became a part of the brotherhood, after much blood sweat and tears, I gained the confidence to pursue anything. I never had anyone believe in me growing up so I had to learn what I was capable of when I put my mind to something and quitting was not an option. It helped that my drill instructors didn't let me quit either even when I didn't think I had it in me. It's not for everybody, but it worked for me. I met a lot of other dudes that came from messed up situations too that honestly were as messed upas mine. When you're isolated, you think you're the only one. I learned that life is messed up for a lot of us and you have to be tougher. The hottest fires make the strongest steel.

He's having problem attracting friends and he could be an introvert, causing him not to trust people like that. 2. He's having bad cases with getting a gf or being girls his age (a couple of lines he said gave me the inkling). 3. His parents/family don't understand him or so he think, and he's not communicating it properly by shutting down. But this is a cry for immediate help, he's operating in depression and despair.

It's easy to say "it gets better with time. When time moves so slow. And you look to your left and see the homeless people numbers are going up and the price of living is going up. It's easy to say it'll get better with time. But is it really?? I'm 28 and to some that's considered young but I've seen and been through a fair amount of sh*%. I remember when I was 24 and had 5 licenses for insurance in all 50 states, a associates in finance from a community college. And a year of experience in the field. And STILL nobody would respond to me for employment. I started to think that because I was black that nobody wanted a black young guy for insurance, because they'd assume i didn't know what I was doing. Then I thought maybe it's because I had very little experience. Just to see young guys in my same age group with no experience or license get employment. And it just made me think, what's the point. Coming from Detroit, and a black family what I had put in work to get was ALOT but everywhere else it's looked at as nothing, bare minimum if anything. And to put the cherry on top bills kick you ass and they don't stop. 4 years later and not much has changed. I'm working at a warehouse and feels like all my hard work is for not.
