Alberto Gomez Gomez explains the iconography of Mayan motifs woven into traditional Larrainzar textiles. His mother Antonia Gomez Santis, age 52, wove this piece that has 160 warp threads. It represents her belief system of the Mayan universe that includes the duality of man/woman, good/bad, earth/sky, rain, lightening. We visited them in their remote community of Jolob during our 2020 Chiapas Textile Study Tour. There will be another one in 2021.
