This is Part Two of my Hangleton to Edburton walk. Chapter 4 from Off The Beaten Track by Arthur Stanley Cooke, that I am following in my In Search for Sussex series.
In this episode I have left Hangleton behind and I'm climbing the Sussex South Downs to Devil's Dyke, a well known beauty spot where there are the remains of the Iron Age Hillfort. During the late Victorian era fairground amusements adorned the top enticing day trippers to visit in large numbers, many on the Dyke Railway.
If you missed Part One it is here: • In Search of Sussex - ...

Beautifully shot and presented. The Victorians certainly knew how to have fun!

Spectacular Richard. I hope you are still getting enjoyment as much as I do when you take us all along. I know you cannot maybe enjoy it as much because you are having to do 101 things, but I hope you get to enjoy it still. Thank You! Sussex is such an amazing place it really is.

Nice to hear the Corn buntings singing in the background. A classic downland bird.

Thanks for making such a calm and serene feel despite the crowds. You did well to obscure how busy it must have been! I’m avoiding this particular spot until crowds have got their post lockdown frenzy out of them and sticking to the less well known places just now, so thanks for bringing it to us in our own homes.

Super video, almost worth losing the lens for! Such a great area but one of those us Sussaxons keep way from at the height of the season as it gets stupidly busy. I do remember as a young teenager rolling out of control down to the bottom of one of those slopes. Seeing you standing at the top looking down bought the horrible out of control feeling right back.

Stunning views! I remember the vid you did w/ Martin Snow & thinking I would have loved to have rode that vernicular (sp) down to the tea houses! I do think for the sake of the landscape that ots best all the Victorian amusements are gone. However I do wish that they would have been able to preserve the vernicular or train for heritage sake! Also, for Seniors, disabled & small children that are not able to ramble up hill or dell this would have been a fun way for them to still reach the top today.

Ahh the Vobesmeister back in the day when after a little too much red and cheese you fall in love with a walk you never took yourself. I understand he turns the comments off nowadays, but he and his lovely love make videos and bring to the hearth of our cottage, 🔥 in quiet rooms and supply good company. The comments is a cold term, for myself and many others it's an open canvas to write word's like, Richard my dear, I thoroughly enjoyed that, Stay good and in touch but only if you wish. Your daily vlog is bloody good though and think you are going in the right direction 👍

Over in Kent on the North Downs near Hastingleigh (Pronounced Arsin Lye in Old Kentish Brogue) we have The Devils Kneading Trough, a similar gully in the highest Chalk Downland. Seems that Satan got about a bit once upon a time.

Being a keen walker, and new to your country, I love your videos. Isn't it tough walking with that sling bag though? Surely a satchel would be much more comfortable for long walks?

Don't they have chalk etched figures there? In Westbury they have the White Horse and at Cerne Abbas of course there's the famous Giant. Recently we had the date 1612 and an etching of a witch on broomstick cut into the hill of Pendle to commemorate the date local lasses were taken to Lancaster Castle and tried for Witchcraft. I don't know much of Sussex although i know bits of Hampshire, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire
