One more little nitpicky feedback for the title: I wish the word -drift- was replaced with "speed-drift"/"speedslide", or anything else. Not being familiar with your usual content, first I thought this video would be about "normal" drifts used in the Tech style like in this linked video, and not speedslides for fullspeed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iR3QetfahMI.html

In proper media, not youtube comments, "On behalf of" when used properly is only used by those empowered to speak for a group. You're just some schmuck who plays trackmania sometimes. wow, this is an incredibly informative video! Thank you so much for making it! I think the TM Community has up to this point figured it out through blind experimentation. Amazing to see the %overlap relative to speed compared to standard acceleration. FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!

I'm a bit surprised given the skill and commitment from members of the community, that a more detailed decompilation and breakdown of the physics engine has not been performed yet. That said, empirical analysis like this is likely still incredibly useful - mechanics like speed slide, bug slide, uberbug, etc. are the result of many parts of the simulation interacting in unexpected ways. Sure, things like the base acceleration curves are probably well defined, but I would not be surprised if you can't really point to a single set of configurations that govern things like the optimal slip angle. Thank you for your work :)

I've been playing it a lot lately. It appeals to me in the same way that speed running Quake does: lots of niche physics bugs to exploit!

Seriously, It would be so amazing to have that plugin available for training. It's very hard to practice speed slides when all we have to go on is rough estimates of lines

This tool is pretty useful and very cool, the main problem is that many people can use this to gain a unfair advantage in competitions and for speedruning tracks

Fantastic video! As for your question of the ethics of releasing such a tool, I think it would be great if you did. As we've seen with TASing increasing in popularity lately, Trackmania players really need more tools like this to grasp the physics of the game more firmly, and (most) community members are honest about their use of external tools when driving runs. Hope to see more content like this in the future :)

As a fullspeeder i'd love to try this plugin ! But I think if you release this kind of plugin it shouldn't be allowed in competition since it gives a tiny advantage for sure. 5:48: yes the angle changes slightly depending of the slope of the road. It's also possible to sd in some stuctures (wallrides, turnovers, loops, etc). For example if you drive in a dirt/grass structure you can sd, the weirdest examples i can give you is with reactor boosts (or magnets), they allow you to sd upside down. I'd be happy to help you if you have anything to ask about speeddrifts or fullspeed in general. Amazing video ! Thanks for all that work, can't wait to see more about this in the future :p

Some tests featuring slopes would be nice, if i recall at least some very good fs players say it does change the optimal width, you can use openplanet to make a bigger building area if you need one to test this. Also I would personally say your plugin is fine to release, as it does not actually change the gameplay itself, but only serves to give more clarity on what is happening on screen, you still have to actually play the game yourself and have the skill. There is actually already a plugin that exists to show acceleration anyway, it just is a much worse graph. Very nice video btw, and if there is any way you could publish the results as a static image showing optimal widths at different speeds then that would be great, although not sure how you would represent the data.

Thanks, and thanks for the tip about the larger play area: As you might be able to tell from the vid that was a problem I hit with my flat test maps. To do slopes properly I think I'd need to investigate custom blocks, since the default set appears to be limited in the number of gradients you can lay out. It's certainly something that would be interesting to look into.

@@MattsRamblings You don't need custom blocks, just a bigger map base, you can use openplanet to create one or I actually have a bunch of them of useful sizes in a discord if you want to just download some.

This is absolutely fantastic. I'd love go see more because there are a few other bugs that are experimentally kinda understood but would need some physics explanation, like bugslide (90° slide on dirt/grass/road/maybe plastic?), nosebug, uberbug (proven possible on TM2020 but someone way harder than other TM games) :)

I think that you should release the tool. Training tools like this help push the limits, and go faster. Unfortunately not using it in competitive would be honor system, and we all know how reliable that is.

@@HS-hq6eg Maybe some beginners would crash a lot trying to use this tool, but more advanced people can use it more easily to gain advantage, I think he shouldn't release completely for the public. But it is just my opinion, I understand your point and Nicks's point

@@fishtail2616 practicing with active system feedback is very effective. The melee community rocketed up in skill and execution when systems became viewable in the GUI.

This is a good question whether this plugin should be released. There are places in fs tracks where you have to sd in cam3 (POV view), so you can't see skidmarks at all. So, in theory, knowing additional information from a plugin that can't be observed in a usual way is practically cheating. On the other hand, pro FS players can do proper sds in every situation, even blindly. So it won't bring much of advantage in top FS competitions. Also, the hardest thing in FS is not knowing the best sd width, but understanding and keeping the most optimal trajectory from start to finish (including sd, walls and tubes). And this requires a lot of training, with plugin or without. So, in total, using this plugin would be a cheating (and this is bad), but only working for mid-tier fs (not bad, not good, dunno)

I think releasing the tool would be a great option for learning speed slides. Once you learned how to do it it's probably mostly in the way and doesn't give much of an advantage anymore.

Honestly I'd love to see you look at the overlaps with wheel modifier like dirt and ice on entering tarmac. I assume it's a value averageing the two surfaces it involves but still would be nice to have it confirmed.

it's been quite a while since this video was released, but I wanted to chime in anyway to say that I think it would be a positive thing to release the tool for public use. all the tool really does is illustrate in clearer terms what the best fullspeed players already know. something to keep in mind is that speed drifting is all about the execution and maintenance of the technique, which this tool doesn't make any easier. all the tool does is give you better information about what you are actually attempting to do, which imo would be beneficial to people who are trying to learn how to play fullspeed maps, not to people who are already very good at them trying to get an unfair edge.

Can you make a scientific video about gears & steering? (e.g gearing up while straightline vs gearing up/down/losing gear while steering) on different surfaces and angles. A lot of maps (especially dirt) require you to avoid gearing up or gearing down in certain corners.

Steering and gears is a lot more straightforward and easier to understand just by feel. You'll lose speed if you're upshifting while sliding, since the shift will take longer than normal. I don't think deciphering the effect needs research and a video like this really, even if it might be a nice reference.

Having that kind of tool would be amazing to practice with. If you can see yourself to releasing it then a follow up vid with more info on the actual angles would be cool. plus some general rules to improve speed slides or maybe other ways to align your car.

@@tobiasauyero1078 How? My DVD of TMS would install with StarForce and then win10 would not boot and would show me a blue screen (yeas I already tried that and almost had a heart attack as I had a lot of data on my win10 PC).

Remember to install all of the official game patches as well (which is shown on the video)

@@tobiasauyero1078 Thanks but I'm not taking 2 risks for this game. 1 the game still installs StarForce, 2 I won't download a dodgy non official patch. And the worst part is that the patch requires you to run it as admin which is VERY dangerous.

@@attractivegd9531 StarForce doesn't get installed at all, even if You restart your PC with the patches, it doesn't BSoD every time. And also the game itself requires you for Admin perms. I've installed TMO and ESWC as well (both with StarForce protection) and nothing happen since then

Really nice video! I rewatched it several times :) But I am afraid that someone might create a auto sd macro from it. On the other hand you already described your methodology, so someone who can create such a macro would also be capable of repeating what you did. (But it would be much more work).

cool to see my replay used in a video :) as for the plugin, i do think its too big of an advantage - particularly on non-road surfaces. also i think learning the technique through trial and error is more rewarding, so i hope it isnt released - but it likely will be recreated and released by someone else. with all that said the tool would primarily be a learning tool, and the top players wont find it too useful - though still neat to have. so i dont think it ruins competitive integrity for top level fs, but it would for intermediate level fs. edit - ive changed my mind, i do think it would ruin competitive integrity for top level fs and that the potential of such a tool is underestimated

Tbh i would like to see this plugin. I recently started trackmania and trying to speed drift however whenever i drift i dont even know if it works or not, if im doing it right or wrong. Simple box on topleft of my screen with changing colors from red to green to signalize how my speed drift is effective, would be enough. Video year ago but would like to hear from u.

Personally, I have been playing fullspeed since around 2014-15 and I have always been wondering about this, as well I could love to have access to that in order to get better at speedsliding since I would have some visual point of reference other than just the skids, it would technically also be usefu lfor the TM1 TAS tool in a sense that we could forge perfect speedslides, if you found the curve there too, prpvided they're not identical. On the other hand though yeah, I would probably ban the use in the competitions or something, because it takes away some of the skill required, just like playing WoW Arenas, which nowadays requires like 3 addons at least

I think the tool would be helpful, and should be shared. I don't think it will give enough of an advantage in speedruns, and it still requires lots of skill to maintain optimum drift angles. imo

when holding the gas car always has forward momentum until you slide then forward momentum changes to sideways momentum (so you can drift corners) a speed drift was originally a bug that occurred that let you have both the sideways and forward momentum gain at the same time, this was later added as a feature.

You should release your SD tool, it gives nothing other than data to look at, and it can help players grasp speed drifting a lot quicker if they are new to the game. Its only data which the game gives you placed into chart form making it easier to understand

I don't know, I think it would give an unfair advantage for people hunting, it would even be possible to write a tool based on this one that automatically corrects the slip angle to give maximum speed output. It seems like quite a dangerous thing to release for the community.

You could have the plug-in automatically overwrite some of the key presses and positions in the generated replay file. Track mania is deterministic so the in-game renderer will flag the replay as invalid if computations from the key presses don’t add up to the game’s constraints. This makes it unusable in score boards for speed runs. Treads the line on invasive and could potentially be bypassed tho lol

tremendous breakdown video that being said I hate FS, can't wrap my head around how some players enjoy looking at 2 bars overlapping and hearing constant top RPM engine noise, not to mention constant looping with forced cam3 so frequently used on FS maps

If you can figure out how to make it so demos don't verify when using the tool, I'd say release it. Or something the tool does to the demo file itself might work, even if the demo verifies

great video. Although i think that your tool would only give a minimal advantage in a real race scenario, it would still be an advantage so it would be better to not release it. but maybe you could publish a set of images showing each speed/track combo, the graph for optimal angle (with exact coordinatss of peak labelled), and an image from the game of what that overlap looks like. i dont know how hard that would be to generate, so depending on difficulty you could show it every 5kmph, every 50kmph, etc. having all this info in a non video format would be great for the game finally, would this method apply equally well to TMNF?

Thanks! I've played TMNF but haven't investigated it in the same way, so I'm not sure if the curves match exactly, but it should be possible to grab the same type of data and do a similar investigation.

Personally I feel that the plugin should be publicly released. The fact that you've outlined the process of creating the plugin means that a top player with sufficient computer science skills could create their own training plugin and keep it to themselves. This would be a truly unfair advantage. Also, I believe that mastering tricks like this raise the skill ceiling of a game and make it more rich and complex. That being said this was a fantastic and interesting video! Thank you for sharing it with us :)

In my opinion, your tool is extremely useful and cool, everybody agrees in that. But the big problem is how people are going to use it, because it is very likely that some people are going to try using it for unfair advantage in competitions and speedruning tracks. So, *in my opinion*, you shouldn't make it completely open. Try accepting requests only from well-know people from the community to test the tool, this will not eliminate but decrease the probability that you tool will be used for bad purposes

i feel like you shuld publish your tool. its very good for training speedsliding, but using it in competitions like COTD, TMGL, TMFL, or other competitions is a reason against publishing it. maybe you can implement somthing that allows this tool only be used in solo / offline maps

Even if it's released, is it worth restricting even to solo/offline? That could still be an advantage as well. We had enough cheating drama lately, if this is already causing a little controversy to release or not.

@@Mandarin9900 Speaking hypothetically if the pluggin were guaranteed to only run on offline maps (not beeing able submit anny times), I fully belive this should be available to download (free or donationware as TM is free and creating a $ barrier would be unfair). My reason for thinking this is that we allways want to push the limit and approach "the perfect run" in TM. I believe this is the reason why Donadigos TAS tool is freely available. I am hevely invested in the TM world, but have yet to delv fully indepth to the most competitive aspects. So if the tool is guaranteed to only work offline I belive it should be accessible, but as all things are, the degree of probability of hacking the tool to work online is something I don't know how to weigh in on. Still if someone were to create a tool such as yours and use it for them self online, that would be worse that having free acces to this tool offline. Ultimately as I don't know how secure an only offline tool would be, I belive having Wirtual consult other key people to be the best choise for the TM community. (I would be heavly confused if Wirtual does not take notice of your video within some weeks) PS: I think it is funny how you inadvertently gave the evidence/explanation for why the wiggling-technique on grass and dirt is faster than driving straight. As wiggling the car initiates drifting in and out of the ideal overlapp zones XD

I really think that speed drifting is a developer oversight which should be patched. There is zero intuitive sense for why it should work and it makes normal driving useless as it will always be slower than exploiting a physics bug to get extra speed. I have a friend that quit the game because he kept getting beat by people using speedslides online which he viewed as an unfair abuse of game mechanics. Nadeo need to realise that sweaty speedrunners aren't the only people playing these games

1. the game isnt meant to be realistic 2. it raises the skill ceiling 3. people have spent a lot of time mastering it and i see no reason why they should change it for you 4. im not even sure how you'd go about "patching" speed drifting, considering it exists because of the engine. it's like trying to patch bhopping from csgo "I have a friend that quit the game because he kept getting beat by people using speedslides online which he viewed as an unfair abuse of game mechanics" its not unfair, he could learn to do it too. this is literally the "i dont like that these people are better than me" argument and yes i know this comment is 3 months old

​@@rraaiin It's a game with cars in it, they should intuitively behave like cars. It doesn't have to be a sim but it should reward precise driving and taking an optimal racing line over abusing unintended physics glitches. Just because a minority of idiots wasted their time mastering a glitch in a videogame doesn't mean the devs should cater to them. Patching it would be easy, just like they recently patched the stupid wiggling on ice. They can leave it in the old games, let the new game move forward instead of being so stuck in the past. And no, my friend's complaint was not a "i dont like that these people are better than me", it's more of "I don't want to waste my time learning broken unintuitive mechanics which suck the fun out of gameplay" The trackmania community is so stubbornly stuck in the past it's ridiculous.
