Sean’s fretting hand has an extreme level of economy of movement. Nothing wasted. Nothing extra. Simply serving the groove.

Seriously so much good stuff going on here dissecting the feel of non verbal communication within a rhythm section. The sports analogies are on point - the concentration over thinking - not having to use your whole musical knowledge every song. Basically how to hang as a musician, serve the song/vibe, and not let any ego interfere with the groove. Love it! Wish I could give this knowledge to my 16 year old self. \m/\m/

Best bit of advise I was ever given (as a drummer, now bass player) - Less is More. Case/point; listen to the pros - they play like they have nothing to prove. Sometimes (most of the time) that's harder to do than some complicated fills. Good stuff here.

I first learned about Sean Hurley when he played with Vertical Horizon. I just thought that he was another solid bassist. Consistency is the keyword here. Different feelings and fill ideas will percolate up in your brain as the groove continues onward. Don’t take too many chances though. Maybe one Hail Mary pass per take but that’s it! Sean says “you’ve gotta invest in yourself.” Poignant advice from the master! He’s right! Love that slightly late snare too. I just subscribed!

In all honesty, I didn't know who Sean Hurley was until about 6 months ago. Ok, yeah, I live under a rock! LOL But, man am I glad I slithered out from under it! How much influence has he had on me in a short time? A lot!. I know I'm not going to be Sean Hurley, but I am going to have a TON of fun playing bass. I have 3 basses all of which were either J or PJ. I bought my 1st P bass back in November and I put LaBella Flatwounds on it. I search out his videos and study what he does. He has a great economy of movement, he's not show-boating, plays what is needed, adds a little extra flavor, and falls right back in the groove. He respects the music, his bandmates, and lets the song breathe and have a life of its own. What more do you need? Oh, yeah, play like Sean! LOL I'll be satisfied to improve at whatever my level is but I do work hard to enjoy each song, beat by beat. Thanks Sean!
