She's one of the handful of female directors that's been exploring the female gaze in cinema these last few decades. Her characters are very relatable and she taps into the experiences of women at different ages and stages so authentically. People have criticized her for only showcasing white privileged women in her films, but it's a world that is most relatable to her. I'd rather see her do great work telling a story she resonates with than tell a mediocre story about a minority. There are plenty of filmmakers, film styles, and stories to choose from worldwide-- let Sofia do her thing.
