Description English / French
Whole exposure of the juvenile male gorilla to the mirror on February 25, 2019: the rushes were assembled in chronological order. Only images where it is not within the camera's field of view have been cut off.
Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE with Michel GUISS DJOMOU have been setting up very large mirrors since 2009 in a remote region of Gabon near the equator line and close to the Atlantic Ocean. Multiple camera traps were placed in front of each of these mirrors to film the animals' reactions to their reflection from different angles and distances.
In humans around the age of 2 years after learning in the mirror with his parents that the young child recognizes himself in a mirror. If, without him noticing, his mother puts a lipstick mark on his forehead and places him in front of the mirror, discovering this mark on his reflection, he will then put his hand on his own forehead. He will have passed the mirror test.
It appears that these mirrors placed on the estate of a gorilla family. Videos published on RU-vid, with a total of more than 100 million views, showed the reactions of his family chief ("the silverback") to these intruders. They highlight that this chief cannot look his reflection in the mirror because among the silver backs, looking each other straight in the eye is like a " war declaration ".
This video of his son, not yet head of the family, therefore not yet silverback, shows that he could quietly watch his reflection and make his apprenticeship in the mirror to reach the stage where he perceives the reflected image as himself, rather than of another gorilla. He can look at his teeth, his tongue and have fun making faces.
When he will have started a family, will he make a difference between his image in the mirror, which he will continue to look straight in the eyes, and a silverback outside the mirror, which he will try to drive out of his domain, without looking him straight in the eyes to avoid a real confrontation?
-------------------------------------

Very fascinating watching this young male gorilla (not yet a Silver Back, so not threatened by his reflection, rather very curious). I love seeing him not only Discovering and Processing, but the Learning (curiosity & creativity) is more important in some ways than Knowledge....I mean, even look at our species, many Humans waste their Knowledge 🙄 and don't even use their brain for Creativity nor being Curious about things! Well, I guess I am a Curious Human watching a Curious Gorilla...we are Both Learning somethings 😀🐒 (now I'm so filled with Curiosity and Questions 😅) Thank You for the Wonderful job you do!

*After reading numerous comments calling for the dismantling of these sadistic mirrors, your feedback on my videos encourages us to pursue our overwhelming and somewhat dangerous passion.* It is a great reward for my wife Anne-Marie, my friend Michel and me. We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long descriptionin English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on... It's a choice.. Thank you. Check out my 160 homme made videos published on my channel ru-vid.comvideos and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle. May I invite you to watch especially my videos which, unfortunately, have a very small number of views and are very informative like: First mud bath of an cute new born elephant with her mom and aunts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2pj1VfkNJS4.html Fresh Water from Creeks triggers the urge to urinate in wild mammals: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DluIAy7k0l8.html Eaters of waterlilies: Buffalo, Elephant, Sitatunga: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oIH76mIIob4.html Can an elephant survive without half of its trunk lost in a poacher's wire snare? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5o9gWi8pZqE.html Before buying ivory jewellery or carved ivory objects: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2buTj7pNvHM.html and unfortunately there are many others in this case! One more observation, it seems this black back doesn’t have a troop. Perhaps he was cast out as he is of age to be cast out. He seems to be alone. This is probably just my human feelings interjecting but it looks like he feels he’s not alone anymore and even sleeping with the image gives him joy and peace.

*Female gorillas leave their birth family at the age of 8.* They join another family or a lone male to build a new family. Around the age of 10, they give birth to their first young. *This young blackback adolescent gorilla, old enough to reproduce, has left his family in search of females to build his own family* and settle in his own domain. It can roam alone for months before these encounters and so becoming a "silverback". The presence of mirrors in this remote corner of Gabon's rainforest breaks the monotony of his daily life. Alone, in peace and quiet, he can observe his reflection, his grimaces, his teeth and thus learn to use the mirror, which in time will allow him to understand the reflective properties of the mirror. Just as in humans, in gorillas, the ability to recognise themselves in a mirror is not innate and requires an apprenticeship. Once he has started a family and become a silverback, he will avoid looking at the silverback in the mirror (his reflection) because looking straight into the eyes between two silverbacks is a sign of defiance and fight. So our peaceful cousin will try to use his strength to drive his reflection out of his domain by only looking at it out of the corner of his eye.] Watch my video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tz0avWZoqjg.html [Gabon: This Silverback thinks this intruder in the mirror (his reflection) comes to steal his wives.] and then read the description attached to it, just like each of the videos on my channel, ru-vid.comvideos where you'll find over 100 videos of animal encounters with our large mirrors, installed and maintained with my wife Anne-Marie and our friend Michel for nearly 10 years.

I often wonder if we're making animals smarter when we do little experiments like this. I think of animals like cats & dogs watching television, and this ape carefully examining a mirror. These are things they would never otherwise experience, and their brains probably develop in certain ways to understand & deal with them.

I don't think it's cruel. We have seen how an elephant can figure it out quickly when a mark is placed on it and it tries to remove it on itself after it sees it in the mirror. Humans are confronted with mysteries continually and it doesn't harm us. This might spur a new kind of thinking in the gorillas. If they understand how it works, later they will enjoy looking at themselves. Perhaps one day they will meet the culprits and assign the mystery to those humans. In the mean time it is very interesting to see how a gorilla thinks or does not think, and tries to figure it out. He seems also entertained by it all. I love it when he scratches his head.

Exactly! As in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is also the result of learning to look in the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. *While mirror training can be successful in some blackback gorillas (females, adolescents and children),* after a long practice in mirror in laboratory as in wild, it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking *another silverback* , or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid. *After many years of encountering our mirrors, the father of this young male gorilla, the silverback, has still not learned that a silverback reflection does not present the slightest danger for him.* Please read the description attached to each of my 180 videos published on my RU-vid channel you will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle ru-vid.comvideos

Just when you think he's got it, that he finally realizes that other male in the mirror is himself, he goes and lunges at the mirror image like it is an enemy. He even seems to play with his mouth/lips/teeth in a way that suggests he gets it, but then does the dominance dance as if it's another male. It will be interesting to see, if he stays in the area, how he continues to treat the primate in the mirror.

He cracks me up. The way he rolls his tung around, and watches. I think he may be falling in love. lo...l He's getting the mirror all steamed up....He's perplexed at how he see's himself. he knows that he is looking at himself. He has become self aware. Wondering how this works. He wants to understand the mirror's secret. You can almost see his wheels turning as he ponders it all. He probably see's the mirror in his dreams at night now. He thinks he has found something special in this mirror. He wants to keep it for himself. How? He really enjoys his own company now. It's awesome to watch him discovering a new dimension.

He is trying so hard to figure out how the image of himself can fit inside the mirror with it's dimension's. I think that is what he keeps looking even though he knows it's his reflection. He also knows he is big, to big to be inside the 2" depth of the mirror. He lives in 3-D, but the mirror where he see's his likeness is only 2-D. Example, 6' wide, by 4' tall, only 2" deep. He will continue to look behind the mirror looking for the ret of the reflection.

Peaks my curiosity to think about the effect something like this could have on the wildlife. Especially when it comes to encounters with other rivals. I cant help but wonder that if indeed they do understand they are seeing themselves, they probably would not pay much attention to it. On the other hand, if they don’t understand and eventually grow complacent by the mirror, can this experience lead to confusion about the potential danger amongst rivals? If they believe they could be looking at a rival, anytime they see this encounter, will the experience effect their ability to recognize danger when confronted by a rival? I hope I am explaining that right lol Any response would be great. Oh and p.s. I know this video is mostly about the gorillas but I’m curious regarding all wildlife.

We are neither scientists nor veterinarians. We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years, to show on RU-vid the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it. Our first videos posted on our RU-vid channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. On the other hand, a video of young elephants playing in a river while adults are quenching their thirst is much more enjoyable to watch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YkmPBl4NPv8.html (In Gabon front of trap cameras, elephants crossing Ndouni River). To find such "spots" it is advisable to get further away from the path used by the few 4x4 vehicles of Nyonié, to go deeper into the forest and to walk in the beds of creeks and small rivers. This is not safe, especially when you are old. To progress more easily in the forest, animals use this off-road trail, without vines, bushes, brambles and trees mixed on the ground because of the very numerous tornadoes in this region on the Equator line. We came up with the idea of placing very large mirrors at the end of a long straight line on this trail to attract their curiosity and "block" them in front of their image. We have also placed other mirrors under trees where numerous animals appreciate the fruits. At other locations in the middle of the forest it would have been very lucky for animals to meet their reflection. Please watch the other videos on my channel and share its link with your friends: ru-vid.comvideos

@@juniourdavis7745 *In the area where my mirrors are placed, the main carnivore (except for poachers who avoid going there because of the presence of more than 70 trap cameras **ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bIoUM0VnYng.html** ) is the leopard. It is a solitary animal that does not hunt in a troop. It avoids attacking solitary male elephants as well as families with children because of their power of reaction in case of attack. It avoids attacking a calf in a herd of forest buffalo because of their aggressiveness. It avoids attacking great apes (gorillas and chimpanzees) because of their cohesion and moreover it does not climb trees well and it avoids attacking mandrills because on the one hand they are in troops of 150 to 300 individuals which have very sharp teeth and climb trees very easily. . Moreover the flesh of these mammals is not very tasty except for the buffalo calf. The leopard appreciates small game such as small antelopes (blue duikers), porcupines and especially palm rats.* It should be noted that chimpanzees, frugivores, insectivorous and herbivores occasionally eat small monkeys such as the putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans). Thus there is a kind of statuquo between elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, buffaloes and leopards that avoid meeting each other, all the more so because in this forest, there is no competition for food, fruits and stems as marantaceae, being numerous in all seasons. So a fight between a silverback gorilla and a leopard cannot take place. Watch my 170 other homemade videos on the channel and don't forget to read the attached description each time. He know it’s him but he can’t figure out how it’s being done 😂. Now the silverback in another video clearly didn’t realize it was his own reflection. I wonder if age could be the determining factor like in humans, i.e., young people are more open, aware, and have the ability to adapt. However, I find folks my age and older are pretty set in their ways and the way they view the world.

*After many years of encountering these mirrors, this silverback has still not learned that a silverback reflection does not present the slightest danger for him.* In my description attached to this video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. Hit the “show more “ option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 180 videos published on my channel. ru-vid.comvideos

The brain organ did not evolve to see reality, but the perspective of it. This is why is so difficult for many sentient, self aware beings to understand a mirror image. How can you be some place else than within your self? When you think like this, it is almost impossible to get the point! And we humans are no exception. We think that understanding the mirror image has something to do with having a sense of self, when it has absolutely nothing to do with it. It only has to do with understanding that your image can be some place else than within yourself. We also tend to believe that reality has only 3 dimensions, this is just a perspective, reality doesn’t really has dimensions, we are just dividing space where there are no divisions. We think of acceleration as a constant advancement of speed, when in fact, this factor is only the perspective of acceleration. In reality, acceleration is just the distortion or relative time space bestowed upon by matter. Cats after 2 years of age do not seem interested in reflections. At least the ones I have worked with. I think animals that are in environments where there are more reflections, such as rivers and lakes may have a better understanding of reflections. I think if gravity would be added to the equation of the mirror experiment, the gorilla may be able to understand it faster. Why is it that no one has placed a mirror on the ground at a horizontal level, and see if they understand it faster. You have to spend more money on a strong platform, but it could be worth it. Also having smaller mirrors standing up, where gorillas can only see their faces may bring them to wonder that the mirror image is not another gorilla, therefore a reflection. Or they may think it is a widow to another weird place to another gorilla who is peeking from a small aperture.

*1) I posted a video showing resistance of my mirrors to blows given by a very angry elephant. Tusks have succeeded in break the glass, but no shard of glass came off the plywood where it is securely bonded.* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NdD1on4H9ss.html *But my mirrors are not designed to be placed flat on the ground, the frame resting each day in a pool of water due to daily storms and not designed to withstand the weight of the elephants passing over it.* *Moreover, what is the point of putting a mirror on the floor when its purpose is to attract the curiosity of the animals and not to discover its existence by trampling on it?* *2) Gorillas rarely drink water in rivers, lakes, creeks or rain ponds because they consume succulent vegetation that is comprised of almost half water as well as morning dew.* *3) Have you been able to recognize your own image clearly by leaning over a puddle of rain water or over a river or a lake? Maybe just your shade on a sunny day? I believe that on the surface of the water its own image cannot be reflected perpendicularly but laterally. For this reason your neighbour, under some light conditions and some quality from the bottom of the pond or the river, can see distinctly your face but not its own. For this reason, animals were not able to learn from the mirror by drinking from lakes, ponds or rivers.* *4) In order to provide the gorillas with smaller mirrors where they can only see their faces, they will have to be solid and strongly attached with steel wires to concrete blocks in the ground, so that they do not disappear scattered in the wild outside the field of vision of my trap cameras.* Here are the GPS points of these mirrors: number 1: S 00+06'40,6" E009+21'40,4" number 2: S 00+06'40,7" E009+21'41,8" number 3: S 00+06'47,5" E009+22'08,9" number 6: S 00+05'41,1" E009+19'45,1" Have a nice trip! @@XHB06400CANNES Yes, cement blocks is what I imagine them on. The bottom mirror can be made not from glass, but plexiglass. Just like one that I saw made for a lion. The idea is for the gorilla to see that another gorilla can not be on the other side. How could the other gorilla be standing on the other side without falling? And they will eventually, see the bottom mirror if you place it close by the other large one. You could also attach the smaller mirrors to a tree. You can ditch the glass and provide only plexiglass. That is what they use for kids rooms. How about a safe mirror like that they can pick off the floor and see themselves on. You can make them round so that they don’t hurt themselves with the edges. All of these factors might give them important clues that what they are watching is a reflection. If you can find a large plexiglass mirror ball. I wonder what they would do. I have not worked with gorillas, so these are only suggestions. Cheers.

@@XHB06400CANNES I just have to add, a mirror they can pick up might just make them realize that it is a reflection. When you look at a whole image of someone, you assume they have weight, volume, and force, but if you pic a small mirror with your hands and see that it does not have much weight or volume, how could it be another gorilla? They might think something else, but I doubt it. If the gorillas leave with a small mirror, that might teach them all about reflections. Then you may see them come back with a different approach. Don’t know if that would be dangerous for the gorillas. It’s just an idea. And maybe you get lucky and they stay near the camera.

@Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE From what I saw the lion looked behind the mirror plenty of times, then started to scratch the mirror. Then he began to loose interest. I think he found out it was a reflection. From the start he appeared to doubt about it. Never really challenge his own image. The females did not take much interest, looking at their image but then looking to the side of the mirror. I think that beings who are familiar with reflections might know what mirrors are faster. When I am in a clear pond I can see my own image. I know that all brains have adapted to see the perspective of reality, not reality itself. And reflections is something that is missing in nature. Even a pond reflection is not quite like a mirror. But animals who drink from pond water might get the point better than animals who have never seen pond water. Just a theory. The concept of reality is something all of us have problems dealing with. When a volcano is about to explode, all animals know the perspective of that reality and leave the area away from it. But, in the past, because of our religious beliefs, some people instead dressed up in fancy clothes, went to the top of the volcano to do religious rituals. The volcano would then blow up and many, if not all of the people in the village would be killed. This is something that have corrupted our society, for a long time. We pass out laws, restrictions, judgements and mass murder of other people and other animals based, not on reality, but on our own belief of reality, which may be quite far away from reality itself. It is like making decisions that would affect others in a great manner based on a dream you had. We never think about how distorted our minds can be, and the fact that we make decisions and judgments base on such. It is frightening!

He appears, when lying in front of the mirror and opening his legs to explore, that he is self-aware. We know that they have the ability to be self-aware, like elephants As a human being, seeing self-awareness as an enhancement to our life, I see this education to enhance the existence of this creature. I might be totally mistaken. But I feel much like i did when my children becames self-aware. As if that is the ultimate existence; to be self-aware. @@XHB06400CANNES It took me a minute. My comment was not about who or what is "self-aware", but the nature of awareness. In this case, I did not say "all elephants" or "all people" for some of both are limited in their ability to be self-aware. In your case, you appear to be so "imbedded" in your identity of "teacher" that you are limited in your ability to hear. You see everone as a "student". It is your identity. So when I make a comment, you automatically assume the position of "teacher" and must correct me. I have written a couple of books on that topic. If you like, I could forward you one which explains that construct of "identity" in humans. There are "worker bees" and "carpenter ants". But people take their "posotion" in society by interacting with their environment. The "identity" of humans is more adaptable. Feel free to construct your identity of "teacher", but I decline to assume the position of "student". I hope that you find this comment amusing.

Allow me to you personally recommend, some one of the 160 homemade videos from my channel that have not been randomly recommended by RU-vid and that unfortunately, have a very small number of views even though they are very informative such as: First mud bath of an cute new born elephant with her mom and aunts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2pj1VfkNJS4.html Fresh Water from Creeks triggers the urge to urinate in wild mammals: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DluIAy7k0l8.html Eaters of waterlilies: Buffalo, Elephant, Sitatunga: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oIH76mIIob4.html Can an elephant survive without half of its trunk lost in a poacher's wire snare? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5o9gWi8pZqE.html Before buying ivory jewellery or carved ivory objects: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2buTj7pNvHM.html and unfortunately there are many others in this case! Keep watching the numerous videos that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle : ru-vid.comvideos Good vision!

I noticed that when the leopard was trying to fight with his reflection a large Male elephant kept chasing him off No animal dares to get that close to a male gorilla.
