I haven’t seen this episode for 30+ years but I never ever forgot the details of his last line. It stuck with me all this time. Made me teary hearing it again. An amazing script writer.

I’ve been with this show since the beginning, and still watch reruns on the regular.

As an FYI, executions in Mississippi took place in the State Penitentiary in Parchman, a prison farm. First by hanging until 1940; electric chair until 1952; gas chamber until 1998 and now lethal injection. A book about Parchman written by Ivan Solotaroff is titled "The Last Face You'll Ever See: The Private Life of the American Death Penalty". And given the contents of the book, what Sheriff Gillespie said isn't far off the mark.

Carroll O'Connor is one of the finest actors to ever pick up a script and give it a go. Absolutely captivating in every role I've ever seen him play.

I didn't even know it was a series. We never got it in the UK. I remember the great Rod Steiger as the Police Chief in the movie. Great it was. I remember this guy as Archie Bunker and a good friend of Frank Sinatra.

Carroll O' Connor was a great actor and his son Hugh O' Connor played the part really well in the tv show In The Heat Of The Night I think it's pretty cool they played different characters.

Carrol o Connor will always be Chief Bill Gillespie to me. He’s the one I grew up with.

In france only free individuals could be legally executed so when the condemned was being led to the guillotine he first had to sign a registar that granted him parole before he was handed over to the headsman who would then lead him out of the prison to "the widow". The whole process from the moment of handover to the blade falling lasted less then two minutes.

Why is Bubba so sexy? To comment on that; because its not just his looks. His personality . He's tough but he's not conceited and full of himself. Shows respect for women. He's like a teddy bear and sweet to women. You'll even see him blush.

Another FYI: In Great Britain, a condemned prisoner spent no more than 3 Sundays from sentencing until execution. All petitions for clemency were sent to the Home Office for the Home Secretary to review. If the Home Secretary did not find any reason for clemency, he would write: "Let the law take it's course." With that, after the third Sunday passed, that Monday at 9:00 am sharp, the governor of the prison, 2 guards, the executioner's assistant and the executioner would enter the condemned prisoner's cell, where the prisoner's hands would be pinioned behind him and then he/she would be led to an antechamber next to the cell (which would be unbeknownst to the prisoner) where the gallows and the trapdoor is housed. The prisoner would be led to the trap door marked with a cross, his legs pinioned, his head hooded and then the noose put around his neck with the knot set at his right ear. The guards would then stand on planks next to the trap door, the hangman would take the safety out of the trapdoor lever, then pull the lever opening the trap door. The average time from entry into the cell to pulling the lever would be less than 2 minutes. The fastest time was 7 seconds. The death penalty should be torture till death and aired at schools. It would make people think before committing horrible crimes.

I went to Catholic school, so of course, we had religion classes that discussed the various beliefs of the religion, which include being against the death penalty. In 8th grade, we were shown this episode, and it was pretty somber and silent when the lights came on and the discussion with the teacher that followed was subdued. I'm firmly pro-choice on the abortion debate, but my jury is still out on the death penalty. I think we do need to have it for serial killers and unredeemable people like psychopaths who can't be cured who have committed horrible crimes, but I also think it's used way too frequently and disproportionately on minorities and should not be applied as often as it is. This episode in my formative years probably had a lot to do with my stance.
